Has anyone heard anything new about smuggling being made a career path?
When I joined in May, 2008, there were skills listed to help with it, but, so far as I know, nothing was ever really implemented.
Any devs working on any ideas for this in their free time?
I know there have been other forum posts about this in the past, bit I haven't seen any for a long time. |

Nothing's been announced. Smuggling still suffers from a dire lack of content as well as lack of tools. Even if a fully formed smuggling system was implemented tomorrow, there's still almost nothing to smuggle aside from drugs and random NPC goods no one cares about. |

Unfortunately, making the content needed for smuggling would go against the whole "players make everything" plan that CCP has been on.
All of these trade goods and commodities that you get from missions and random pockets of space that have legal implications and desirability in different faction space would need to become "player made, player used" but that won't happen. Short of having in-game events where things like construction blocks shortages following a Caldari megacorp's warehouse theft, this really won't take off. Plus you'd need a lot of rework on the custom's agents mechanics, i.e. actually disrupting/scramming you, chasing you in warp with ceptors, traffic blocs on system gates and shutting down station access to you to corps that don't support smuggling/the item in question, etc, and making your suspect or even criminal depending on what you're hauling in each faction's space. You'd also need to introduce agents in space who would require smuggling from nullsec to highsec and vise versa.
However, the final touch would have to the removable of the blockade runner's cargo scanning immunity since that just lets you load up 12k m3 of contraband and move freely throughout the EvE universe.

Hell ... just give some real tools to better get through gatecamps (if in a freighter / industrial) set up by other players, and call it a day. Yeah, a scout / webber alt is great, but that's more of a bandaid than a real solution.
Either a variant of a secure can (smaller, good for indy ships, etc), or a module (freighter?) or a rig. Would have some penalty on your cargohold (5-10%?, maybe more for the rig/module since the "whole hold" would be filled with the dampeners or whatever). No matter what route was taken, the item wouldn't show up on the relevant scan(s).
If you want to add in "NPC Smuggling", then just make it a secondary benefit of the new item(s) -- e.g. 50% chance customs doesn't find it (T1 M0).
One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

We have this wonderful tool called a Blockade Runner which, when fit properly, aligns as fast as an interceptor and warps even faster. It also has the ability to fit a Covert Operations Cloaking Device and a Covert Operations Cynosural Field Generator, if the situation requires it.
I run boosters through hisec all the time. Only been scanned three times (once was my own fault for sitting on grid with Customs Agents for too long) and never caught.
I also made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.
