I'm looking to pick up playing another MMO in addition to EVE online. I would like to join one that has the same type of great community as EVE. Any suggestions? -- The universe is governed by the aggressive use of force. Hows this for a little note! Oh, and YARRRRR!! - Petwraith I prefer the term RAWR - Xorus |

Eve is my main MMO and the one I take seriously so as my secondary MMO I chose one that is a little less serious, I play Auto assault. Drive around in cars and blow crap up, I like it for letting off steam.

Doesn't that beat all: a great community comes with a small MMO, but a good MMO will inherently have more people in it (EVE excepted) -- The universe is governed by the aggressive use of force. Hows this for a little note! Oh, and YARRRRR!! - Petwraith I prefer the term RAWR - Xorus |

Well if you like pretty harsh games. Archlord might be worth looking into. Bit obscure Korean developed MMO. Nice if you ask me, and small community atm. But that's in part cause it's just Beta atm. But I think it has a lot of potential. And well worth checking out. ( fileplanet has the open beta client )

A fair amount of the kiddies from Final Fantasy Online moved to World of Warcraft. Could have some luck there as far as community is concerned. If I had the free time, I'd be playing EVE and FFXI, but I only have time for EVE.

The thing about WoW is that the 'community' is so big that youc an get lost pretty easily - if I were you, I would try to find a group of online friends who play and join them. It would not be fun to start playing WoW all by yourself with no guildies.
I don't know if you are a forumite, or read other forums besides this one, but most forums have a club of WoW players who play together. Might be worth asking around on your favorite forums.

I have to agree with what a lot of other posters have said here, the only other MMORPG on the market right now that's worth a look IMO is WoW.
EVE forumites tend to class WoW as a "kiddie game" or somehow vastly inferior to EVE but ignore that, it's just the usual MMO "patriotism". WoW is a very well designed, highly polished and very entertaining game - but go into it with your eyes open about what it is.
It's NOT a pvp game and it's really not got any form of endgame that's worth bothering with. The progression from 1-60 rocks, the quests are well designed, the game world is superbly designed and the support is outstanding. Play a few characters and play both sides I would suggest - Horde and Alliance. Personally I'd suggest a PvE server - there's very little difference between them nowadays since Battlegroudns killed all world pvp, and if you play on a PvE it means you can have both Horde & Alliance chars on the same server.
You can solo all the way to 60 if you like but it's a lot more fun with a small group of friends and I've found that duo-ing (or 2-boxing hehe) is a great way to do quests. You can really give yourselves a challenge by going for quests that are a few levels too high for you
I play both EVE and WoW - I play WoW for polish, pve and content and I play EVE for pvp and depth. They're very different games but I think they complement each other very well
edit: Oh and if you do try WoW DO NOT get drawn into any of the "reputation grind" crap - it's the worst bit of design Blizzard came up with and it all sucks wet farts out of dead pigeons. Equipment-envy is a path to hating WoW.

Ah, but other games will requier you to login, etc. How many MMO's allow you to logout wherever you are in the world, without consequece? (Ignore Project Entropia and Second Life as they technically aren't 'games')

I played this game back when it was released, but quit due to real life issues. It was pretty fun. I would suggest checking it out at the very least.
Here is what the wiki has to say about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saga_of_Ryzom
And here is the official website: http://www.ryzom.com/
I am thinking about trying this out again myself as a side game while I train up skills here or as a weekday thing as I don't have alot of time to run around killing things here. Just usually enough for a mission or two.
But yeah check it out it was pretty fun and still looks like it could be fun. {o,o} |)__) -"-"- O RLY?

I still play GSIV (started late 1995). The community is small and mature. Most people have been playing the game for years. The GameMasters (Both Dev and Customer Experience) as well as the GameHosts (think ISD) are recruited straight from the playerbase.
And besides, if you are a Simutronics Customer you'll get a chance to beta Hero's Journey. Those of us that went to SimuCon get a ***** at it first, then the other Simu customers and then maybe everyone else.
A word of warning though... the forum software is rather.. archaic.

Oh yes as a side note, The Saga of Ryzom is similar to Eve in a few respects.
Friendly mature player base, no grinding involved(ralatively) as there are no levels and the game works off a skilltree sorta like eve does. And like eve being an older player only gives you diversity not dominance over all.
Saga also, is the only game I know of that some battles require a hundred or so players to defend against hundreds of NPC's in battles.
Seriously check out the game its one of the best MMO's i've personally played, and Incidentally is my first MMO.

Like PvP?
Try World War II Online.
Small developer team, pretty small player base.
If you like eye candy, this game is not for you. It looks fairly bad, but when you take into consideration that they use an engine from 2000, and the fact that the whole map is just one big zone(The map is huge, around... Uhh.. Not sure. At least 600km x 600km with a viewing distance up to 8km), they're doing a decent job. Although, sometime soon(tm) they will upgrade their engine to Unity II.
The game is an MMOFPS, that focuses a bit more on realism than many other games. It's a quite excelent tank simulator(NO hitpoints on tanks. You can hurt a tank in various ways, shooting off its tracks, blowing up the engine, setting the ammo storage on fire, jamming the gunbarrel, killing the crew with APHE and spall.), good flightsim, and decent infantry game.

Yes Ryzom is a nice MMO with a very mature playerbase as it's a rather strange MMO
To have casual fun and the first person feeling that miss in EVE, try Planetside (even free to play untill 03/07 with limitation to vlvl7 but it's enought to have fun) but the community is very bad , full of tard ready to do power abuse or to insult you if u make them loose 1 isk (comparison level apply)
