Ok im about to invest in a new frigate. The big question is what to choose from Merlin and Kesterl?
It seems like Kestrel is alot of firepower but a little more squeeshy, and the Merlin is more all round. Maybe i should buy em both?
I have read that Merling is the thing to choose, but the Kestrel have 4 Missile hardpoints. After i got Missile launchers on my Condor i owned 10times harder then when i used 1 damn turret. So can somone with a little more experience tell me about their experience using either 1 of theese ships?

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 13/09/2006 10:59:54 You can only fit 3 launchers on a Kestrel properly. The real thing is they use different strategies. A merlin will get in close, orbit and use blasters and rockets while negating damage by being agile and having a proper tank.
The kestrel is used for long range attacks more, it can't really survive up close, not as well as a Merlin. Missiles are easier to use though since they have less variables to worry about BUT you'll learn more from using a Merlin, lessons which you will use later on as well, so those are best learnt in an inexpensive ship. They both work, it's personal preference.

Another note is that, as far as I know, Kestrels do more damage, while is as fragile as eggshell. Merlins have more "tank" as Caleb has stated, but from experience, the damages weren't that great (and I more Hybrid skills than Missile skills back then).
Merlins have better shield and resists, while Kestrel is, from experience, an eggshell with sledgehammer.
But then again, I haven't been playing that long.

I've been using my Merlin with missiles, and fitting railgun ammo that maximizes range. The max range of the missiles is well inside the fall off range of the ammo, but I've been wondering how much I'm hurting my DPS by using the longer range, lesser damage rounds.
Hehe.. never even occured to me to use rockets. Would it be a big enough jump in DPS to justify the cost of re-fitting to rocket launchers and changing ammo?
Thanks!

Sorry another question I forgot to include. I'm currently running dual 125 guns. If I re-fit to rocket launchers, should I refit to 75s since I will be tracking the targets much closer? Seems like my trans velocity would increase quite a bit closing to > 5k.
Thanks!

I did the same thing a little while ago. Got rid of my Rails and missiles and kitted out my Merlin with Blasters and Rockets. I also fitted an overdrive unit and an afterburner. With these i can go a hunting for lone crusier rats in 4.0 space (60k a pop if i remember right) (as long as they don't have masses of missiles - have yet to give them a real go though!!) and happily take on a couple of destroyers in it as well.
Tend to orbit fairly close then the guns can't hit you

That's not really true. It's a thread about optimizing T1 Caldari frigs, and I asked questions related to the advice given to the OP.

Edited by: Vizgoth on 13/09/2006 17:09:51 Fly the kestrel and work on your missile skills. Then progress Kestrel>Caracal>Raven. This is best for missions and ratting not PVP btw. Can fly the hawk and crow in between too. Also later on you can fly the manticore and cerberus which both own. Missiles for the "I win" pve content.

It all comes down to the gear. I have both a Merlin and a Kestrel. I love my Rocket Kestrel, I have it loaded with expensive gear and it will own any Frigate or destroyer with ease.
My Merlin can take a beating and come out on top but can't dish out the damage like the Kessie can.
It all comes done to which way you want to go in the game.

I use both Merlin and Kestrel. I have 4 launchers on the Kestrel. Skills and a MAPC enable that. I don't have a definite preference, but I seem to be using the Kestrel more and the Merlin less, probably because I can outrange most anything in level 1 and most level 2 missions. I can sit back with it and pop stuff from a long ways off. The Merlin, I think, is more effective up close, and up close isn't cool when you're surrounded by rats all aggroing you at once. The Merlin might be more useful for PvP, the Kestrel more useful for PvE.

You need a fitting module (MAPC) to enable you to have the PG to fit 4 launchers and decent gear in the other slots.
Otherwise its 4 launchers and crap gear or 3 launchers and decent gear.
