Hellooo people.
I've got my new computer, all is well and good but i'm still hunting for a really good antivirus program to use with it.
My old computer used norton but I got really fed up of the cost, system resource hogging and seeming inability to uninstall properly (i've met virus's that were easier to remove than norton)
At the moment I'm using up a 60 day trial of avast 4.7 professional and its ok but I seem to be gathering a lot more spyware, addware and other malware than I would like, and I'm left wondering if theres anything better avaliable.
Any recommendations, advice and opinions would be more than welcome, what do you use? and what do you like about it?

To be honest, you really should not be having virus/malware problems to begin with if you are careful. My computer hasn't had any problems ever, and its years old.
Kaspersky, however, is definitely the best antivirus program out there. Not the fastest, but definitely the most thorough.

General common sense on what to open and what not to. Not using IE will stop most spyware/virii coming from webpages. (firefox, opera, mozilla, etc etc) Not downloading things via limewire and other p2p programs that are notorious for virii. (plenty of other programs out there) and last but not least, A web based virii scanner is typicaly the best once you've already been infected, some of the worst virii can detect some anti-virii and bypass it, you never know you've been infected and can go on untill you might as well format from data loss. housecall.trendmicro.com is a decent web based anti-virii and spyware/security hole informant.

AVG Free.
It's free. It updates daily. It works.
I've had, in the past, viruses bypass Norton, McAfee, FSecure. Totally ignore them. But AVG has never let me down.
I kinda feel that most AV software is snake oil and the only people who can be trusted are those who have no vested interest i.e. those who supply free software, the reputation of which is the currency upon which they build their commercial enterprise.
Never, ever, ever EVER use pirated AV or firewall software. Same goes for OS's. It's just not worth it tbh.

I use NOD+ZoneAlarm, but TBH 99% of the time you don't need anti-anything if you're careful.
I just have it because some places with some useful things simply require your machine to be able to withstand malware of various breeds. ----------

Use that for antivirus
ccleaner and spybot for spyware removal, run ccleaner on bootup, its so fast I haven't noticed any delays.
Use firefox as your browser
Gmail for webmail
XP firewall works fine, also most routers have a built-in hardware firewall.
Never use AOL, and never buy a computer from a big company. They ship your machine with so much bloatware, you'll spend hours just having to de-turd your bland new Dell before using it.

Then whack in old XP cd and tada clean machine. --------------

I use Avast. Previously I had used AVG, but after finding Avast I use it exclusively. It has a better interface than any other antivirus I have used (those being limited Norton , McAfee , and AVG) and very tight integration with Windows without being heavy on the resources (with all services running it takes up 20MB of RAM). It is also multi-platform including PDAs (CE and Palm) and apparently the first 64bit ready AV.
And I mean come on, it's named after everyone's favorite word after Yarr!!
Did I mention its non-server version is FREE?

I agree with shikari, Kaspersky is the best one you can get and to pair it up with a decent firewall go for Keiro
Both are good for the job theyre suppposed to do.

I've been using McAffee Antivirus & Firewall for the past year but apart from a rampant virus (W32.Gael.A) it could never rid one of my PCs of, I've found it's slowly become more bloated and full of adverts for other McAfee products. On top of that, it absolutely *has* to let you know about *everything* it does, by throwing up a pop-up box to inform you. I stopped using Norton products years ago for similar reasons, finding they've become too cumbersome, bloated and user-unfriendly.
When the year's subs ran out, I have since totally formatted that PC and have now settled on Kerio Personal Firewall and Avast! Antivirus Personal. Both are free and fully featured, unlike many free programs which have most, but not all of the main things you need from such a program.
The firewall is very configurable but still simple to use and warns you about whatever you want it to warn you about. The Antivirus is brilliant and silent (until it finds something), has lots of options and has realtime protection as well as an on-demand scanner. It updates automatically and except for now having two system-tray icons (instead of one with McAfee), I highly recommend these two products, and best of all, they're free! -------------

I use Sygate Personal Firewall, Spybot Search and Destroy, and CC Cleaner.
Of course in the end, the best anti virus technology is "common sense" and basic PC security knowledge
