OK, I'm at the point where the lag and the glitches really isn't making EVE the heaven it once was.
No you can't have my stuff
I'm not quitting as I love this game too much, but can't they just raise the price a few $ a month and then buy more hardware?
I'm sure if they said, "We want to invest a few million of $ directly into hardware." people wouldnt mind.
Also a fee increase doesn't have to be permanent, if you are concerned about that--why not just a six month raise?
Next, if 5,000 people left because of the price increase--OH WELL! That decreases lag and the revenue is still the same because of the price increase... 5000 fewer people is less petitions, less griefing, etc etc!

Thing is, from what I've read over the past 6 months, they have the hardware, it's the software that isn't up to the task.
If I'm not mistaken, the last major server upgrade SHOULD be able to handle like 50k people online at once, but it's the code that's not up to par.
I doubt they'd up the price, as they are trying to keep it at the magic number of $14.99 USD. It's the "magic number" for MMO's currently. I have a feeling that in 2 years it'll be $19.99 USD unless something changes.

I'm feeling lazy at the moment, so pretend there's a big rant here about how there's a limit to how much hardware you can throw at a problem before you have to face that fact that your software needs to be fixed.
Considering that CCP currently has the largest supercomputer in the MMO industry, I'd say they've found that point. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

If you'd quit because they raise the price, than you must not really like the game... If raising the price can remove lag and hire more GMs, than I'd gladly pay more!

Yep, and there were also a bunch of folks that said they would glady part with 200 big ones to see the completion of 'racing legends' complete with one racing track;)
Extra tracks to the tune of 60 big ones a turn.
You get the point im sure, it would have been sold to all of about 100 people.
Eve is allready overpriced compared to the rest, they make a mint as it is already. (reference the article printed in that finish news paper)
Tbh id be nafted if they decided to increase, i doubt very much every penny they make goes into making eve a better product as it is....
That would be true commitment for you ______

Correct. EVE is on the most powerful gaming computer cluster in the world, and the tranquility cluster is one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world...
No reason from a hardware standpoint that there should be any of the problems... Afaik anyway.
As for money? CCP's revenue should be more than sufficient now... CCP isn't a small, poor company anymore, not like it was two years ago... --------

uuhhhh.....no.
What you are asking for is bad business. Raise the price so people leave? You're asking the company to shoot themselves in the foot.
The last figure I can find on number of subscriptions is 100k and that was from Feb. It's now Sept so I think it's safe to assume at least 15-20k new subscriptions.
I will do this in USD because it's easiest for me.
120,000 * 14.99 * 12 = $21,585,600
So what you're saying is that over $21million USD a year (and keep in mind it increases with number of subscribers) in revenue isn't enough money to not only pay for new hardware regularly, but also to pay people to code the bugs out of the software?
CCP is already making a killing off subscriptions. It seems that they need to look more into software optimizations and not look at throwing money or silly little band-aids at the problem. They're adding content without putting enough effort into fixing the problems. I realize the content people are a different department and all, but honestly, reroute those funds into FIXING the game before breaking it further with new stuff.
I wonder how much more CPU overhead their silly little queue system has added to the cluster in an attempts to actually relieve it? They added stuff that has to watch CPU usage constantly and then automatically add a queue to gates. That uses CPU as well.
This has turned kinda rantish so I'll stop now.

Much ado was made over the super ramsan and blade and all that stuff I don't know what it is that was supposed to make EVE a super computing monster capable of supporting twice the population for the forseeable future with capacity to spare.
What ever happened to that? Can't blame all the trouble on bookmarks or some garbage when you got your server equipment on a list of the top whatever most powerful machines on the planet.

7. How many PVPers do you estimate will be able to blob each other to death in a single 0.0 system?
Enough to make the baby jesus cry.

They've raised their subscriber base by something like 30-40% since the last server upgrade....they should have enough cash without increasing cost per account.

Edited by: Michiyo Daishi on 14/09/2006 01:04:14 Havent you people thought about the fact that it's taking them so long to tell any of us regarding code changes is because they're still fixing the code in the first place.
Give them some slack, even with my limited knowledge in programming, I know coding a huge game like EVE wont be done overnight, much less in a month or 2.
China's shard is a testament to how Dragon can be. Maybe the real problem is that we have a 3yr old database full of trash that Dragon isnt agreeing with, and they're trying to balance between Dragon's ability to sort through the trash and taking out the trash itself (insta problem).
Sidenote: If they do decide to hike the price, even temporarily, I'd be forced to cut my own subscription too ... >

How does the effect of people just paying for their subs with ISK for timecards work out? Does CCP still get money for that?

$20,000,000 in business terms is not alot of money, whatsoever. That covers a small base of permanent staff. I wouldnt like to be the one who has to manage the books at ccp put it that way. I would imagine whether people believe it or not, that ccp are still a small company, and their finances are very much a balancing act right now.
