Request for a dev response please....
Since the Dragon patch I've experienced a significant increase in lag and client freezes, and judging by the numerous forum comments, so have an awful lot of players.
CCP are doubtless aware of the problem and investigating it. So my question is - what seems to have caused the vast increases in lag, to the point where the game is at time totally unplayable? I'm assuming that as soon as CCP knows for sure they will make an attempt to fix it, but simply out of curiousity, are there any ideas yet as to what the problem seems to be?

devs are probably still queueing up at the coffee machine because it keeps crapping out and needs to be restarted/repaired every 3 coffees (i so love that dev post about it where suddenly 5 devs posted).... seriously, dont expect a response. ppl have been complaining for weeks and all we got is a blog of a tired dev at austin game conference. the petition queues are probably that long that they'll just purge them telling us "most of these petitions are obsolete by now for sure, please re-submit it if it is still unresolved".
i'm getting so tired of lag in all flavors (jump, module, warp, undock...) and bugs in dragon. i cant even sort by ship size in my overview anymore. if i know there's a blackbird in a fleet and name is unknown i'd like to look at only cruisers and not the whole fleet. it is a mystery to me how one can break a sort function.
building kali on the current server performance will be an interesting experiment. current bugs are annoying enough, with fundamental changes in game mechanics that kali brings the forums will need a new sub forum "flame madness and whines"

And there was me trying to keep the tone of this thread civil and free from whining.
Sure, it's bad and bordering on unacceptable. I reckon the devs know that. I've worked with IT departments fixing stuff, and moaning and whining about it every 5 minutes does not - and this may come as a surprise - actually help solve the problem.

ok, then ccp please solve the problems already so we can stop whining, kthx. why did you even post a thread if there was already hundreds of similar ones? my point was that there is no communication. a blog or two would satisfy me. currently i think "ccp doesnt care".
why is it that only the IT industry uses "technical problems" as an excuse for failure? ok, IT is technical by definition, but if a marketing campaign doesnt work, no matter what the reason is and even if it's an IT relevant technical problem where marketing guys are not actually responsible, they'd get their asses kicked. if i make an error in the balance sheet of a monthly/quarterly closing i lose alot of credibility in future closings so i better not make an error. yet in IT one can blame mr murphy, microsoft or hax0rs...

Nymos, I totally agree with you and I can't see any point in starting a new thread if there is one in this same category with 7 to 8 pages. BTW, you signed his thread and he came with some rude coment, I would just edit the post and just disagree with him in starting a new thread. That is what I would do.

Because you are never buying programs. You are buying licence to use it. So you have no right to check how it works (read: deassemble) nor change. You have almost no warranty. Look at this like instead of buying a car you are buying the right to use it. If car breaks you have still right to use it so everything is OK.
This means you can't relay on any activity where software is used. Unless this software can be owned i.e. is obtained with source and right to compile and modify it.

Edited by: TheBelgarion on 15/09/2006 15:25:04 Yeah its unbearable as said 100 times already ...
SO PLZ CHANGE IT or get us the PRE-DRAGON-Server back
Mission running is almost impossible now ... you get a freeze, time-shift every 1-5 Minutes ... THAT SUCKS !!!
And we are the PAYERS so we can demand a Response and the Problem to be solved as TOP Priority .....
and it is TOP!!!!!
so plz get away form the coffee machien and fix that damm problem!!!
Thx a lot !!!
if u ever wonder why costumers are getting loud, whinning in groups, its all because you are unable to solve the Problem or at leats keep the players informed about what you are doing - I give a damm F*ck about broading around that you reached 30k players - if you are unable to perform with such an load - than it simple sucks a lot!!)
So start to fix the problem keep ppl postponed about that you do to solve the problem is 100 times as important as 30k player barriere or any "stupid in-game story" stuff - i dont care about that as long as the more important stuff is lagging badly ...

I've got to say, I haven't really had any problems this week. Last week, it was laggy and frustrating, but this week I've been ok. To my mind, this makes me think that CCP's working on it and getting these issues resolved. I'm getting over 50 FPS, rarely any gate-lag, if any, and no CTDs that are EVE-related (it's where I've overloaded my system or done something dumb while EVE's running that kills the game). I imagine they don't state what's going on until the patch notes because (in my experience working in IT), you don't know what it is until you fix it, and by then it's fixed so there's not much point in discussing the matter. My recommendation is to just chill and be sure to keep on top of changing your skills.
And if you lose a few hours, play a different game or go read a book and try to not get your panties in a wad

Here I was, thinking it was just me... but it's really THAT bad.
Activating a shield hardner takes from 2 to 5 mins now - predragon, you could expect modules to be turned on within a matter of seconds - even during the worst part of laggy days/systems.
Im setting up a longtime train and exploring other MMO's... Dragon patch really killed my love for Eve - all you can do now, is mine... and, i dont like to mine.

Well well well it looks like the fix is in...and its on SISI in the form of 4562.
We linux cedega users have had the same issues as our windows brethren since the 4561 patch completely jacked up cedega 5.2.6. The logging in, docking/undocking/mail/market etc., et.al were 100X worse for us. Today, Cedega posted the following:
<snip> The start of September brought with it the release of Cedega 5.2.6, otherwise known as 'that fix for the latest EVE Online update.' This allows our users to get back into it after a recent game update kept TransGamers from being able to start the client. A performance regression in EVE caused by the move to WinXP mode has been tracked down, and should be fixed shortly. <snip>
Turns out, the fix wasn't a "linux/cedega" issue, and the FIX is sitting on SISI. I verified this by loggin in under linux to the test server, and it is smooth as silk. No more lag/freeze/black screen. The login is smooth and back to normal.
So apparently this 'may' be what the windows users have been seeing as well, to a lesser extent. ----- ------------

The gripes and moans are more effective if kept into one post. It's more obviously a widespread issue if you have 25 pages in one thread, as opposed to 10 threads floating around.

I agree Pheonix, consolidation would be good.. More stickys would help..
But staying on topic.
Having read lots of threads and posts about lag issues dc's etc.
We run an SQL database at work, it is only small with few table transaction compared to this vast data driven game. Approximatly once a month it is noticable that our system starts to get laggy, and occasional dissconnects for the database its self.
I know that we work on a totally different scale, but it made me think.
Eve has hundreds of thousands of data/table transactions per hour, this must cause fragmentation across the cluster.
It appears some players are experianceing more lag and more dissconnections than others with no real explination as to why. May i suggest that these players are making more table/data transactions than those that are not experiancing the same issues.
When i work on computer systems i always look for simple solutions, and eliminate them. Yes we have 1hr DT per day but this is no where near long enough to defragment the entire cluster.
Maybe 1 12hr DT per month to entirely defrag the cluster would improve things emmensly..
Just a thought..

The new RAMSAN hasn't arrived yet, so hopefully when it does, it will yield some impressive results! -

Edited by: Diablo Venator on 16/09/2006 11:13:24 Mmmm RAMSAN would be nice.... (solid state high bandwidth disks for those who are not geeks )
But although it has made it off the drawing board and into production, the costs involved with implementing a RAMSAN cluster server the size of CCP's at the momment are very prohibative.
Also i cannot see CCP upgrading the servers for another 12months at least as thay have just done a major server upgrade.
A short term solution to a long term problem is needed.. I stand by a full regular defrag..
BTW, Graz the cache clearer you have a link to is a cool tool i highly reccomend it..

Yeah, they already have one, but the other hasn't arrived yet, and I'd imagine they won't 'upgrade' the server pre-se, they will most probably buy more though if the need arives. But most of the lag we're seeing is resolving around the database, and latancy when trying to get the data, which is where the second RAMSAN should improve the situation (hopefully!).
Oh, and thanks for the props! -
