My computer (XP sp2) offered by diversion to the page this morning, to let me download Internet Explorer 7. You know, the same sort of page diversion that takes you to the Windows Update page every once in a while.
Soooo....anyone take the plunge and try IE 7.0? Is it ok, good, terrible, hard to tell if it's better than 6.0, whatever?
Note PLEASE this isn't a place to say IE blows, get Firefox/Netscape/Opera/stuffed I'm just looking for feedback from anyone who has installed IE 7.
Thanks!

Its decent.
Its like Firefox without the security and most of the features. Basically, its IE6 with tabs, and all of the same problems.

Edited by: Thorture on 16/09/2006 03:37:55 Beside the security flaws etc i like it actually alot. Looks pretty cool and i have to admit that the layout is easier to get into than firefox (especially good for those older ppl who are just getting into the whole PC thing. ). A very big plus i find still is that you never have problems displaying a site (gotta love those with firefox :/ )
I only put the IE 7 on the PC of my parents...since it's way easier for them to use/get into tab'd browsing than it is with firefox etc. guess i'd switch myself over too if i wouldn't be to lazy to install it

Anyone noticed this is a beta? I'll wait for the release version, thanks.

I know more sites that don't work in IE than sites that don't work in Firefox

I installed it, but it insisted on using the unbelievably ugly Cleartype. Even on an LCD with the right sub-pixel rendering, it makes my eyes go weird looking at that blurry mess for more than a minute.
I was convinced I hadn't set it up right until I looked at a screenshot of someone else's setup. Same, just-blurry-enough-to-drive-you-nuts butt ugly font.

I haven't tried it, but Microsoft has never made a good browser. IE is just convient for people because its incorporated into Win XP. Any computer literate person would know that Firefox or Opera are better than IE.

IE is also incredibly slow... not only does it take 4-5 seconds to start up but it can also easily be crashed by large animated GIFs.

Sort of, but I can at least use that for long periods of time without my eyes feeling weird. It's not the nicest default font, but it is sharp.
First thing I'm doing after installing Vista is to turn off Cleartype everywhere and anywhere the damn thing's enabled. I never liked it in XP (and I've only met one person who did!) and I have no plans to like it there either.

I suggest you learn about cleartype and the massive benefits that it gives you, and i dont just mean asthetic..

Unless you use IE, you won't experience this. If you do use it, you should be redirected to Windows Update every 40-50th time you start IE (maybe less, maybe more).

Yes, heaven forbid that I might want a font which is clear and sharp given I spend 12 hours+ a day working with computers. Cleartype is ineffective even on the LCDs it was designed to work for.
Seriously, that comment was just cold and completely uncalled for. If I don't hear an apology then I've permanently lost all respect for you.

Edited by: Nikolai Nuvolari on 19/09/2006 09:07:06 The theory behind ClearType is sound...but somehow it never seems to work in practice, at least not that I've seen.
