Apart from trial-and-error or looking it up on the web, is there any way of telling what resistances an enemy ship has?
In particular, when running missions how do I work out what's the best ammo to use against a given pirate group?
Is this even possible?

I am not sure if you can easily find the info while in game, but here is a site i have used in the past.

There is a list of what type of ammo to use against people - i did have it but i do not have it now - you could ask in local channel ingame or your corp channel to see if people have it and can evemail it to you
also people have that sort of thing in there ingame info Ѱv h¬vT t¦ =¬tO¦t thÇ ¦sºt t° ¬h¬±gF thÇ âvtn«O |

I just gave you the whole list of rats and what damage to do or tank vs them.
What do you mean by "see what works?" It's been tried and tested

I think he was actually asking if there's a scanner unit or something IN GAME he can use to find this out.

Sorry for the confusion. As the above poster said, I meant "Using skills/items/etc in-game, is it possible to identify weaknesses in your opponents in order to best fit out your ship for combat against them?"
As the answer is evidently "no", external references such as your list are the only way to determine this apart from "seeing what works" myself through trial and error in game.
Thanks for the list, it is very helpful

Edited by: losmandy on 23/09/2006 04:02:27 In space right mouse click on a ship select info, attributes. Or when docked open market select ships, then sub group types of ship, then select actual ship you need info on click on the small round button alongside, again select attributes.
Attributes will give details of ships weakness/strenghts, bearing in mind a ship can be fitted to offset weaknesses

Note that when it comes to the real meat and bones of EVE, PvP, damage types and whatnot go right out the window, unless your target is (un)intentionally tanking against what you're tossing out.
