train missiles
lasers take way too many SP to be good with, also amarr ships are not that good atm and that goes more so for the t1 amarr ships [bar geddon] so as a "noob" its a bad race tbh
go caldari, its the only real way a new player can compete in any decent length of time
oh and u will see a few posts after this one flaming me aobut how wrong what i just said is, those ppl are either stupid or just want another noob in a apoc to gank

my alt is caldari and my main is amarr
Caldari are good fast - amarr are good
guns are so much different from missiles and anyone who went from amarr to something else will tell you they miss the no-ammo thing

Guns take a lot longer to get good with than missiles. Keep training. Read guides about tracking, transverse, ranges etc.
Check what enemies you are fighting - they may be resistant to your damage.
Train more gunnery skills.
Try using shorter range crystals - if you find you miss lots, use longer range ammo and stay away from your targets until you have better tracking skills.
Keep training gunnery skills.
The one thing you shouldn't do is pay attention to flavour-of-the-month whiners.
Did i mention you should train your gunnery skills?

Fit heat sinks. While Amarr are short on med slots, we've got plenty of lows, just about any setup I can think of on a BS I have 3 heat sink IIs on.
And forget about the armageddon, it's an inferior ship until you have Amarr BS 4. At that point it's a toss up between the geddon and the apoc, but for PvP fits I tend to go with the geddon as the superior ship - you just need to have the skills to make it wortwhile. Forget it with Amarr BS 3 and below.

Put ~5.2 mil SP into gunnery and lasers should begin to serve you well.

The best way to increase laser damage is to yell "PEWPEW!" every time you activate your guns. It works, seriously. Try it.
It also has 50% bigger effect if you hold your push-to-talk button down when you do it by the way.

Amarr BS3 is the point where a geddon outdamages an apoc with guns actually doesnt count the extra damage from having a much bigger drone bay

Edited by: John Blackthorn on 18/09/2006 20:36:01 I find that lasers were much better before the nerf that they got about a year ago.. however to answer your question.
You need at least level 4 preferbly 5 in medium lasers then specialize in beam or pulse. Beams are a range weapon with poor tracking decent damage, Pulse are short range with very good tracking weak damage but rate of fire is fast.
The biggest weakness of beams is that they use lots of capacitor, and to counter that you need to train your skills to reflect that. Any skill that gives you more capacitor and faster recharge you want to take to 4 and then later to 5.
The standard gun skills such as tracking, damage upgrades, weapon upgrades are good to get to level 3 at first then 5 later.
Your going to want to pick a ship that has a laser bonus, some have damage, some have tracking some have capacitor usage bonus. And hac's and recons have muliable bonuses.
If you go for beams the damage and tracking is the best bonus for you, if you go for pulse the capacitor bonus is the best (remember pulse fire more often using up more capacitor)
Next step is to put your skills into your tank setup which most likely will be an armor tank. Look through the skill tree and buy the skills that give your ship the best bonus. If you plan to use a passive resists on your armor tank then make sure you get the armor compensation skills.
Good Luck! John Blackthorn Foundation, CEO

Actually factoring in rate of fire, beam lasers are 50% more cap/sec to fire than pulses. The impression I get with Amarr is you have to ultraspecialize. Train gunnery, engineering (the cap skills) and mechanics to extreme proportions. Get the laser specializations. Ignore engineering shield skills, missiles, and probably EWAR skills. Navigation is somewhat important as many Amarr setups use afterburners.

from my experiance the only downside to lasers is the fact that they are fixed on em and thermal though having said that em thermal are more often than not lower than kin/exp resists so this isnt the end of the world alot of the pro laser posts are true but i fly with a amarr char thats been going for a few years and he takes angels down with lasers quicker than most of my corps raven flyers, with the correct skills at good levels lasers are no worse or better than hybrids and projectiles just pore the sp into gunnery
ive ran amarr setups through quickfit that have got up too nearly 800 base dps!! thats not much less than other races and the plus of lasers are the ships there fitted on in most cases amarr ships make very very strong tanks (maller, apoc Prophecy inperticular) so just keep on it! GL & HF

Got just over 12 mill SP in gunnery and large beam spec V is nearly finished. My PvP geddon with tachyon does over 1000 raw dmg/s with its guns easy.

your geddon is not normal most people dont fly around with 120m+ of faction heatsinks and expensive 5% damage implants
i have about 6 m in gunnery and my geddon with tachs does about 8-900 iirc
