Carriers need to have the option of telling their fighters to pursue a target or not. It is a matter of life and death of the carrier if its fighters follow a target away from the fight. And since the carrier has no other means to deffend itself your now just a bigger target. It takes way too long for fighters to return once they start to follow a target away from the battlefield. And the current server conditions just add to this issue.
This can be a simple option check box on the carrier config menu.

maybe a setting, which limits the range, to which the drones follow their target

edit: suppose if they are being directly controlled by the carrier thats a valid point but if they're assigned to another ship then no

You would have to have the Pursue option checked to assign the fighters.

This option is definately needed for carriers who are actually brave enough to do battle outside of a POS. If a carrier is making itself vulnerable, it should be able to have the option to keep its fighters on the battlefield to defend it. Like salmack said, simply make it so if you are assigning fighters, you have to have pursue target checked.

Agreed, its a tactical decision the carrier pilot should make.

Carrier's are not meant to fight alone. They're support ships. That's why they don't have the ability to fit gun turrets or missile batteries.
That being said, sometimes a carrier might have to defend it's from attackers anyway. The idea that fighters will automatically persue a target when 'protecting their carrier' is indeed terrible.
The fighters go into warp after their target, and if their target warped 200 AU away, then they'll go into warp 200 AU.. which means even when you hit recall, they don't start their journy back until they come out of warp... and that's a 400 AU round trip!
Mining Drones have the options: "Mine" and "Mine Repeatedly"
Perhaps Fighters need the options: "Attack" and "Attack & Persue"
And if that's not obvious enough to understand, "Attack" would mean the fighters work like big powerful drones and don't warp after targets that warp off... while "Attack & Persue" (Or maybe even just "Persue") would cause the fighters to engage the target and chase after it when it warps off.
Then you don't need a check box or anything in any configuration... and the carrier pilot (or perhaps even the pilot who the fighters were sent to be wing men for) could determine based on the situation in the battle how they want the fighters to behave.
(Other useful examples: 1. The above example, the controler may want the fighters to stay to defend and ward off enemies. 2. There is no point for a fighter to persue CovOp or Recon ships since they can cloak in warp and the fighters lose them. 3. The pilot may be afraid the fighters will be baited into an ambush; when they come out of warp others may be waiting to pop them! *. And any number of other tactical options.)

I can not agree with you that carriers are pure support ships.
I do not agree with the right click selection of Attack or Attack & Pursue. You dont have as much time to engauge a target as you do to engauge your roid. It needs to be a preset option. We have enough right click crap comming up now as it is. :p |

Funny you should mention that today. What you're talking about is called overburdening of the right click menu. Show your support for getting this, and many other UI things fixed here. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Question absolutely everything. |

Actually I do like the 'attack and persue' option.
It would appear in the same place in the menu so no extra depth of menus to wade through, and the drone control menu is not particularly huge at the moment.

This is actually a good idea. I always thought it strange that you could not do this to be honest. |

Edited by: Gordon Red on 29/09/2006 01:52:47 Fighters need a nerv anyway or some modul that is effective against them => capital smartbomb or such.
You can't do much against 50+ fighters.
And that they are teleporting to their prey, when it's warping away it's too good. ____________________________________________________________ You want WHAT??? => phew, phew, phew => boom! |

Well you can't do anything about 50+ ships alone so maybe we need a BIG RED button from Staples. And they don't just teleport to their prey they warp to and from hence the time needed to do it.
