If you had to pick an assualt frig for Pirating, which would you go with and why would you? Ive been flying interceptors for some time now and I am interested in AF very much. I dont go out for big ships sooo the AF is very appealing.

Jag and ishkur are probably the best ones for piracy, but tbh u need to go out with several small ships for an assualt frig to be truly useful.

Between the Jag and Ish the question becomes do you like missles or drones. Is the 15M^3 drone bay of the Ish worth more to you than the extra hi slot (missle) of the Jag? (assuming drone skills) The Ish is also a bit more substantial with regards to armor and, I think, structure. If I were going about by myself I'd probably use the Ish, in a group I think I'd use the Jag.
3 T2 drones with Drone, Interfacing, Durability, etc all at 5 would be pretty destructive.

aparently you havnt flown the ishkur, or read its bonus' it gets extra drone bay per assault ship level. meaning that at level 4, you get 35 m3 of drones (2 mids, 3 lights) and at level 5 you get 40 m3 for drones (3 mids 2 lights) as well as a nice even 4/3/3 slot layout. perfect for solo pvp, out gun any similar sized opponent. also running 2x ion II's with 2 small nos = pain for alot.

i just charged a Tempest 150km out that was using a full set T2 1400s and 3 Gyrostab 2s
he was nice enough to sit there shooting at me in my Vengence and i watched his shells bounce off my 90% explosive resist shields
T2 MWD had me going 1750m/s and i got the tackle, and the other 6 frigates in our gang warped in and help pop him, as i tanked him and his drones
so if your planning on fighting vs minmatar, Vengence is the win!

I prefer 150mm railgun setup personally, hang at 13-15km hitting with antimatter with t2 light drones (usually 7 warrior or hobgoblin II, couple spares are nice to have on hand). Keep yourself out of nos and web range while fitting a web anyway, defensive measure if needed and means near instant death for any frigs in web range. The ishkur's cap is plenty strong to support a 20km scrambler and t2 rails for quite a while, while using the repper in short bursts.
In my opinion, even with T2 MWD it's too slow to be effective as a blaster ship, and getting that close seriously threatens your tank if you can't get under the target's guns, especially if he can out-nos you. Even with rails the damage output is phenomenal for a frigate, and many T1 cruisers.
All a matter of preference, though

All of them are useful minus ones with 1 mid slot  . Drone assault are very powerful but the point of a frigate is to be very agile. Drones do not follow you in warp so they decrease your chasing time by a lot. However, when it counts they do impressive damage and or great utility (EW drones ect).
Jaguar has always been my ideal ship for piracy in assaults. Not due to the changes to the ship but due to the fact I need a webber/scrambler and or 2xscamblers. Wolf is good but lets face it, WCS's are common on almost all belt piracy. Autocannons 4tw!

Jaguar > Ishkur, I just sit at 7.5km and pound them with Barrage and they go down like a sack of potatoes.
Jaguar is the ultimate piracy Assault Ship. Makes solo AF piracy viable tbh.

I use a harpy, t2 rails and mag stabs, ROF = 2secs, typical dmg = 80-120 per shot.

Retribution, Underrated. I dont care what the DPS figures say, It will melt most other Af's in a few seconds. Bar those sillie minnies  urr not so hot solo lol, Best bet is a Web and gank before they warp.

if u have a scrambler you are too slow and other ships stay out of your optimal -> laser out of optimal = miss miss miss miss
if u have an afterburner the target can warp away
if u have a webifier the target can warp away
can't use retribution for solo, the only way is to use it is fitting an AB and having a scrambling/webbing friend...

I would go for a Wolf anytime.
Sure, it's missing a medslot, so only use it if you're counting on your enemies to either go for a 1on1 with you, or catch people without insta's.
The damage output on an AutoCannon-Wolf is awesome, and will kill anything...only ship who killed me was an Ishkur with a 3 year old player who knew what he was doing!
Here are a few experiences from my Wolf:
- Wolf vs. Enyo (tech II Ion blasters + nos) = Got me well into 40% armor before he popped!
- Wolf vs. Caracal (Dunno setup..think it was a mix of light and heavy missiles) = Caracal managed to removed my shields before popping!
- Wolf vs. Retribution = Retribution runs screaming, or dies after getting me into 80-90% armor!
- Wolf vs. Hawk = At long range, he pwned me, and I had to warp...got in on close range later though, and he popped after getting me into 30% armor!
- Wolf vs. Ishkur = One experienced pilot managed to kill me Wolf in that ship, so kudos to him, the ishkur is the only worthy foe to the Wolf.
- Wolf vs. Stabber = Stabber went down faster than any of the AF's...incredible damage!
So, to answer the question, I favour Wolf over any other. Yes, the Jag has more medslots, but it's weaker, tank-wise and damage-wise, and in the end, that's what matters with these small ships...they're not meant for heavy tanks - only quick ganks/support.

I've been flying it and the crusader for nearly 2 years exclusively. I know very well what it can and can't do thanks.
When you don't try to fit it like you would other ships or go with the normal cookie cutter setups you will start to see what it really is capable of.
