I was wondering which is better to use. Basically they would be used in a BS vs. another BS in close-range combat.
I used the QuickFit program to calculate the damage. My drone damage modifier is 4.838, if I am using heavy drones their base damage is 24, with the modifier that would bring the damage up to about 116, times that by 5 drones and it would be approx. 580 damage every 2 seconds or 290 damage per second not taking resists and such into account of course.
With sentries, the base damage is 50, with the damage modifier it would still be 4.838 for a total of 1209 damage every 4 seconds or 302 damage per second. So basically 12 more points of damage per second.
Are my calculations correct, or am I way off? I've not used sentry drones yet and was wondering if they are worth it and which drone type would work better in the scenario I gave. Thanks!

Sentries are long range. Use Heavies for close range.
Note that different drone types have different damage modifiers. Also, note that QF is known for overestimating DPS.
Sentries are definitely worth it, but not for close range. They just don't have the tracking to hit much of anything closer than 20km or so. But you can use Drone Link Augmentors, Omnidirectional Tracking Links and Warden sentry drones for 100km+ drone sniping in a Dominix.

in a close range bs vs bs fights Garde¦s are the way to go , they outdamge tech 1 ogres and dont have to fly to the target to do there damage . And in my experiance tracking has never been a problem. Garde¦s also work wonders agaings webbed cruisers , the burst damage tends to **** them up real nice.

Sentries do out DPS T1 heavies, but they have limiting factors of their own.
Absolutely horrid tracking. The largest railgun (T1 unnamed) for BSes tracks only .000375 radians/sec slower than sentries.
Immobile. If you have to go anywhere, anyway, you have to pick them back up or leave them.
Pretty large sig res, on par with BS-sized turrets.
They are still excellent tools, like for mission running one can OMGWTFBBQ groups of NPCs before they close the distance, but if any get in close it takes either a lot of webbing or swapping out drones to hit them.
It's also possible to gate-snipe (151+ km) with sentries, but the number of kills one gets will be rather low. ---------- My sig is boring. |

Been running lvl 3 missions for a while with my Domi and sentries and it pretty much comes down to your opponent's transverse. Gardes start to miss cruisers within 15km range as the NPCs begin orbiting. No battleships in lvl 3 missions and battlecruisers usually don't make it within 15km range . Since it's a Domi, I don't have to choose. With a Thron, you have to make a decision. Off hand with my total lack of pvp experience, I'd say take the heavies and rely on your Thron weapons. I have one gun on my Domi simply to grab NPC aggro. My gut feeling is that Gardes will have problems with a battleship orbiting them at 10km.

and also underestimating, i once fitted a navy mega with 7x cormack heavy neutrons, with magstabs and all, including max skills, drones, and officer ammo and got only 800dps on a 0.0 resist across the board ship
