Small question about afterburners. I have the basic 100NM burner on my Punisher and info says it gives 105% speed boost.
Now punisher at normal speed goes 270 m/s but when the burner is on it just barely reaches 500 m/s which is far below 105%.
Am I doing something wrong?

Edited by: Tyris Maelstrom on 20/09/2006 16:04:50 your 1MN booster gives 105% boost, that means if your max was 100, you'd do 205 with AB on. But things like ship weight can affect your AB output, believe also armor plates aswell.

So I've heard. Thing is I dont use any plates. I got on 3x dual beam canons + 1x nos 1x Afterburner 1x small repairer + 3x cap booster (not really cap booster but the power to cap instead of shield thing)
So I should still get more speed out of it.

The AB adds mass when it's active (1MN AB II adds 500000Kg, for example) so you'll never reach the true maxiumum speed boost.
I think the ship's base mass inhibits the maxium speed boost by itself, anyway, though I'm not certain of that.

No you shouldn't.
Afterburners can be kind of confusing. They provide a specified amount of thrust (1,500,000 for the 1MN), and add a certain amount of mass to the ship (500,000 for the 1MN). The Punisher's mass is approaching 1,425,000, meaning its mass WHEN THE AFTERBURNER IS ACTIVATED is 1,925,000.
The formula to determine actual boost is: Thrust / Mass * Bonus
Even if that isn't exact (that formula has you getting 480), it gives you the idea of the effect mass has. The Punisher is a very heavy frigate, so doesn't get as great a bonus from afterburners and microwarp drives.

Increasing the mass should reduce the agility, but I don't see why it should reduce the top speed!?! ____ "If your not dyin' your not tryin'." "Are you prepared to go all the way, Alexi?" DuGalle |

And I don't see why there should be a top speed at all, for that matter. We're in space, right? Wrong.
The reason there's a top speed reduction, that there's a top speed at all is that realism subordinates to game play and game balance.

You could always say its the "max velocity" the ship can reach so that it can say, stop itself from running into a planet/sun/etc within a given 'safety' timeframe (whatever that would be) Think about it in 'real' terms if you want to apply that in 'real' space nothing significantly would slow you down... if your going so fast you can't slow down and either turn or turn totally around, you'll end up going so fast that it takes too long to do said maneuver and WHAM your entering a sun or planet. So even if all this was possible, there still would be a 'max safe speed' so you dont slam into things.

The way we fly in space now (real life), is thrusters are fired to attain X speed, then shut off. the ship coasts through space at the speed attained. When they want to slow down, thrusters on the opposite side of the ship are activated, slowing the ship. Or, the ship is turned around and the thrusters are fired. course changes are done in the same way, the ship is oriented on a new vector and the thrusters are fired, changing the ship's course.
Eve has a physics engine more like underwater then space. And a ballistics engine like the matrix...but that's another thread and another day. - - -
