Yes i am venting, i just lost a ship to a guy cause he convoed me as i was trying to get away, i was about to warp out but as i went to hit the autopilot button (i already had a dest set) this convo request pops up from the guy who is trying to get into scram range (he was using a 7500m scram), i petition it as an exploit of the game mechanics (any action which gives you an unfair advantage over another player) and get told that it's not an exploit, what a load of rubbish, lame lame tactics..

Actually, convospamming is harassment and convo/invitation to prevent people from warping is exploit. Exploit is using game mechanics to get advantage where they aren't meant to give advantage. Convos are meant to chat with people, not prevent them from warping off.
Difficult thing for Gms is to see if it was intentional or not, though. Ask for it to be elevated to a senior GM. - Three years old |

Some guesses: I doubt the convo had anything to do with you getting popped. That happened because you didn't notice someone with a -9.9 and a multi-million bounty showing up in local. Also, you (most likely) didn't hit that Oh Shet! button quick enough when they came into your space. ALSO, you likely closed that convo or said something nasty instead of saying the magic words: I'll pay.

While I'm agains the repeated spamming of group/convo requests as a tactic to prevent people being able to fight/flee, it sounds like this guy was just opening convo to ransom you.

My guess is he was gonna ransom. Hard luck, buuhuu. Also, by your definition of exploits, Gate Sniping and Insta-Bookmarks are exploits, and hell, may as well add having more SP to the list, and blobbing, owning 0.0 space, having more ships...the list goes on. ---------------------------

I know it's no comfort, and I agree with you that using that tactic is lame (although it might've just bad timing), but in the future, if you have something like that happen, the keyboard shortcut for autopilot is "ctrl + up arrow". That will work in almost any case (even when you have a window that is not allowing you to click anything).

That's nice. Not relevant. This is:
CCP's definition of an exploit is to do something which has been called an exploit by a Dev or s GM. Doing so is banable.
There's also the BUG that windows steal exclusive focus and default to yes. But this does sound like harrassment, frankly. Using the winow to cover his approach.

Dude STFU.
Personal attacks just because HES TELLING THE TRUTH are uncalled for, so hush.
To the OP, pirates convo you to ransom, they/we dont usse local cos then it lets EVERY in the system know your a pirate.
In anycase u still could have manually warped, it doesnt appear that he sent multiple convo's so it was no exploit.

Why would any pirate be so stupid as to send a ransom request before he's got the target locked down? ________________________________________________

I think we are missing some pieces here.
So far we have OP tries to warp away, gets chat request, then petitions as exploit, finally petition is denied. What we are missing is what happened with the convo? Was the OP blown up right away or was there a ransom attempt? Did the OP simply refuse the convo request? What was the power difference (ie: was this cruiser vs. BS/HAC)?
There are just too many combinations of situations possible to really say whether this really was an tactic or a coincidence for sure. Without any of this information all we are doing is guessing on motives and reasons.

its pretty much been said, but yea, auto reject is an option. but then pirates cant ransom you, which means you might miss out on chances to save your ship in bad situations.
Pirates dont want to use local, cause it can alert others in the system to your plight, and bring help to your aid before he can get the ransom/get the kill.
From the sound of it he was just trying to ransom you. the exploit version is different, and usually involves more than 1 person, as 1 does the exploit, and the other does the lame killing.
I hope thats vague enough...

Edited by: tyrol on 21/09/2006 20:24:22 yeh i remember having this happen to one of our scouts only a few weeks ago, he was invited to gang after jumping into a hostile group but its wasnt just one invite, nearly the whole hostile gang spammed him. lucky he got away, but to me its cheating, and it bewilders me how GMs turn a blind eye to it.
its nice to think that "he was just trying to ransom you" but its a known way of stopping someone in their track and lame people use it

Mission runner who get ganked because of forgetting XYZ item (in this case auto reject) then goes and files a peition for ship lose. No doubt under the harassment section. Another reason for the queue being so long.
Note to mission runners - it isn't harassment when another player blows your ship up because you don't believe in non-consensual pvp. |
