There are two possibilities when loading a PVP Vexor drone bay...
1) 2x Heavy, 2x Medium, 1x Light drones
2) 5x Medium, 5x Light drones
The first option massively improves your DPS, and seems like a good idea if fighting cruiser/BC sized targets. The second option is supposed to offer greater flexibility vs smaller ships - ie use mediums on cruisers, lights on frigates/intys.
The question is, when you've got an X5 web, 2+ medium nos and 150mm rails fitted, does it really make a difference whether your drones are a mix, or are all lights?
The only type of frigate I forsee giving me problems are of the 15km WMD orbit and 1 point scramble variety, capable of outrunning the heavy drones and killing the rest. But of course it is not realistic to expect to counter every setup.
So should I load the first mix, or the second? Am I committing treason against the Federation by considering the max damage mix?

Hmm i have never thought of using that first load. Problem is the Heavies have a HELL of a time hitting Inties - even if webbed.
Does it give you THAT much of a damage bonus? I think that a team of T2 Mediums on a vexor throws out a crap load of damage (all things considered)
Also, its kind of nice to have all your drones behaving the same (imo)

Ive never thought of that combo of drones either.
Do you know what DPS increase it gives you?
not used heavies much either, do they track cruisers easily enough if there webbed?
Always stuck with the second option myself...

Im using the first option for PVE, and with webbers even the heavies can hit frigates

With my drone and ship skills (only L4) and using T1 Gallente (thermal) drones, I get:
1) 191 dps
2) 145 dps
Noob skills meh, but this is a single standard we can talk about. If you want to discuss a far more highly skilled case...
1) 309 dps
2) 233 dps
So the question posed is, considering my ideal targets would be lone cruisers/BCs, not frigates, and frigates tend to run away from a 2 - 2.5 year player in a drone ship unless in a blob anyway, would I really be missing a key bit of flexibility in pursuing high dps at the expense of tracking small objects?
Bear in mind I have flown as a fleet tackler for most of my EVE career, and in my experience being nossed and webbed tends to be terminal even if the opponent only has heavies deployed, especially when the drone hp bonus given by the Vexor makes killing them a more lengthy process.
Am I acting rationally in choosing the less flexible single wave high damage mix?

I suppose that if it works - then use it.
However, I am 90% sure that heavies will NOT - or hardly ever - hit an Inty. even if webbed those things can be zipping about.
Try it on a buddy first.

I prefer 5xMed 5xLight for one reason. If some1 starts killing your drones and actually kills some you might run out of drones, where if u have 5meds 5lights u will have at least something. --- First pvp expirience in eve is alot like having first sex, you have absolutely no idea what you are doing, but it is exciting and one way or another its over way too fast.
