I recently got into EVE about a month ago and have been having a whale of a time. Recently I started doing some factional warfare and the more I look around the internet, the more it seems that joining a corp is the best way to get the most out of EVE in general.
The problem is, I am only 14 years old and most online gaming communities hate teens. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but the vast majority of corps seem to have comms as a requirement. This makes me a bit cautious about joining one so I'm wondering if most corps in EVE are against having an adolescent among their ranks due to the sound of their voice or a bias. |

I don't think physical age is relative- it's mainly maturity (or the lack thereof) that people are concerned about. |

If you're not an annoying screecher no-one will really notice. If you are, and use your age to justify being annoying, people will remark that you are an annoying screechy teenager. It's as simple as that, really - and for some reason this seems to be the case for female EvE players too.
Plenty of the decent folks have kids (some of whom play) and are reasonably tolerant. Avoid the intolerant ones, don't take it too personally etc. You don't have to tell everyone your real age either btw. Maybe your close friends or corp leadership when you join. Otherwise tell them you're a late bloomer and prepare for some teasing. If people go out of their way to torment you over your age, shoot them and say it was an accident. In a really high voice.

If you're a mature 14 year old most corps will be pretty accepting, if not you'll get short shrift.
The age range that plays Eve is pretty broad; it goes from people your own age to some that are in their 70's or older.

There are some corps that are 18+ only. So check up on that before you look to join. Many corps run open fleets and/or there are open fleet opportunities all over Eve. I know FW had open fleets all the time and the people there would recruit if you were a good pilot.
You might consider trying out some open fleets and if you can follow orders and show discipline, you'll get corp invites from people who will vouch for you.

I suppose it just depends on the corp really; during my time looking through the recruitment boards, as well as looking them up IG, I've spotted quite a few that'll list maturity as one of their requirements. Sometimes they'll be quite specific about the age, and sometimes it'll be more general.
I wouldn't say most online communities hate teens; rather, it's the people who're crass/immature every time they type into the keyboard, or those who just flame for the hell of it... and that's not a group exclusive to teenagers.
As to finding a corp that not only accepts you, but you actually feel comfortable in... well, that can be quite tricky. From experiences elsewhere, I'd imagine those sort of operations would require you to be on comms for the sole purpose of listening to the FC, you probably wouldn't need to talk much, if at all... if they use it to talk/exchange banter then you'll need to see where things lie and whether they're comfortable including you.
As Marsha said, you may end up with a couple of rotten apples, but don't let that put you off; every game has those. All I can add to that is good luck!

I have a person in my chat channel for months, only recently I learned he isn't even the legal drinking age here in The Netherlands (which is 18 years now).
Before that, I would have estimated him well in his 20s.
So, age isn't usually a big thing for other players, it's how mature you are.
Any EVE player would rather play with a mature teenage player then with a childish and bitchy person in his early 40s.

14 lasts about 1/14th of your life, 50 only lasts 1/50th. So proportionally speaking, 14 is much longer than 50.
As for the OP's question: there are corps who refuse to take minors (anyone under "age of majority" or whatever) simply because they don't want to go to gaol for talking about sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, and thus being accused of "grooming" a minor. An infection can be cured, Child Sex Offenders Register is for life.

I've done recruitment for a few corps and I can honestly say some of the best players I've ever recruited were teenagers who explicitly broke our 18+ or 25+ label. We let them in because we liked them, as people (and despite a fair bit of teasing, they gave as good as they got). An awful lot of 'vets' are suspiciously young too IRL especially when they've played the character continuously. We just put that age minimum into our recruitment to reassure people we were mature (which was a complete lie, old people are disgraceful at times).
There is perhaps a justifiable concern about longevity in this game along with personality, but otherwise it's just intolerance. Whenever I see a corp description announcing "no drama" I take it as a "no women, aiiii" sign. After a bit of study it appears that they have enough drama queens already, and can't cope with the competition.
@ Jimmy anyway, good luck with the search, and as previously mentioned - take it in stride. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right corp, but the friends you make along the way are worth it. Use ingame channels and the forums to get in touch (and stay in touch) with likeminded people. There are some mouthy teen players who have been fairly high profile, and trolled to hell over it, but persisted. So stick with it, even if you mess up.
One of the richest people ingame informed me of his age a while back, and when I worked out his starting age was close to yours, I was really impressed tbh. Mainly because he's so much more likeable and mature than virtually everyone else ingame. But his corpies have to have known his age along the way, and it doesn't seem to have done any harm.

I fly with a guy who was about your age when he started playing.(maybe slightly older) Iv known him since he was 16-17 and he is waaaaaayyyyy more mature than me (he is about 20 now and I'm 30). He and I ended up as directors in a semi-professional c5 pvp corp and basically ended up running it for a good while.
So like everyone else has said age shouldn't matter as long as u act mature and behave, then no one will really mind.
Ps. Blod if you read this then your a **** and I hate you (told you about my maturity )

And 14 was an awesome year, but i haven't be ID'd, ever, so i'm totally biased. Not that you should do anything i did. Then again, if you're really into playing eve, you won't have much time for that other stuff.

As a childish and bitchy person in his 40s i can vouch for this. All i would add is that having an under-18 player on comms would modify the comms. Some corps have the 18+ requirement not because of your immaturity, but their desire to relax into immaturity, appalling language, manners. |

That being said, I have to add: I've never been exposed to a more immature group of adults than in MMOs.

Adolescent boys are widely considered to be one of, if not the most, sought-after demographic by game development studios, but the uptick of female gamers could be a signal of changes to come. Mobile ad firm Flurry Analytics found that on on the whole, women presented a much larger value proposition to game developers in terms of revenue and brand engagement.
Bottom line I have no Issues I feel the more CCP Can Cater to all sorts to gamers age and Demographics the Larger the Playerbase will be at this Point Eve Online is really in the need of more Players such as yourself.

This basically. Also it leads to stuff like; "REKT" and such.
Most established players already raised kids. Including teens. Having to do so again in a virtual environment they're looking to relax in, is rather "unrewarding".
If you want to be a teen, join a teencorp. If you're looking to play EVE at its finest, behave like an adult. Then laugh at adults behaving like teens.

You have to admit, it's sort of confusing visa vis what is meant by "behave" in EVE - the place where the most treacherous, vile, immoral and murderous behavior is a social norm. What is meant by "behave yourself" in EVE? I'm really very curious. Does it mean don't say anything naughty in local, fleet or corp chat? (Don't bust a gut yet, there's more.) Does it mean only post relevant and polite things on the forum? (The chortles fly!) Does it mean don't cheat your corp mates, or steal from the corp? Does it mean always do what you say you're going to do, and never be deceitful?
PLEASE. TELL ME. What is this "BEHAVE" you expect from KIDS but not from YOURSELVES? HMMMM?????

I agree, age is not so important only if you can show restraint under fire in combat. However one must be careful as was already said about child predators maybe around preying on the innocent among us. So better to keep quiet about your age and not make it public knowledge.

While I cannot speak for everyone else, I'll speak for myself- I treat others with respect, maturity and dignity. Does that make me "better" than or "less" than anyone else? That's subjective to the person who's interpreting it thus.
I live (IRL and in-game) by the principle of treat others the way you'd like to be treated. It's really not "rocket science", folks. IMO we're all in the same boat, IRL and in-game- we're all trying to make a living, all trying to "get ahead" in some form or fashion, and although I'm not "ambitious" I don't begrudge those who are. |

To me:
Don't do to another what you don't want people to do to you. If you are upset when people call you names, don't do it to another person too.
If you want to do be a pilot that does "commonly less accepted activities" that's perfectly fine. But don't rage to people if something doesn't go as you expect it should be going.

I had a few 14 years olds in my corp over the years, it really depend son the type you are.
i had two players who were 14 and they would not shut up. I did not use voice cooms so it was all txt, but it was irritating, instead of typing a full thought they wrote in broken lines. So like instead of saying: Hey reap, i think i might be ready for a drake, what sort of setup do you think i could get and what type of targets should i shoot? Also are we going to pvp soon?
it would be:
Hey Reap
I think i'm ready for a drake
what kind of setup should i get
tanget here
etc
It gets bothersome. But they were alright people so never bugged me. I had one that was a complete ****, annoying as ****, and i wound up kicking him. One was mature and played till 18 then went mia for a few years.
I've also had a 17 year old that by his voice i swore was in his 40's
so it depends

Thanks for asking, the expectation is the same for young and old: generally be more of a fountain than a drain. This covers humour, chatter, responsibility, patience and self control.
PS Hilarious means something's so funny it wrecks your mind and your life, so that you have to sleep under a rock somewhere with poop and leaves in your hair. Overuse of it is draining.

I see a lot of prejudice in this thread and I'm not sure why.
Most 14 year olds will come into a game like this and kick your ass. They've been gaming since birth. They live for the kill. They're not worried about losing ships. Nor do they cry in the forum when they don't get their way.
Unlike the 'vets' in here, they adapt and continue making the oldsters look like a bunch of useless tools.
They didn't grow up on MMOs like most here. They grew up on FPS and have no fear. The first thing they do when they start their first character is undock and shoot something.
In my opinion, CCP should be actively reaching out to younger players. They are the future of this game. Not the whiny, semi adult players coming from other lame MMOs and spending the rest of their EVE career crying over every little thing, like most of the vets that I see in this forum.
It wouldn't take much for some teen equivalent of Something Awful to put together the next unbeatable alliance. The only reason I'm guessing it hasn't happened yet is because this is a subscription game.

Like others have already said, age is seriously not the issue, maturity is. I've known over-40s who were at best immature brats, and 12-year-olds you could totally depend on. A smart corp will act on how you behave, not on a birth certificate. |

Back when I flew for Test Alliance Please Ignore I frequently flew under FC alphastarpilot. He was a fantastic FC, one of the best we had at the time, despite being... I think it was his 16th we celebrated in comms during a fleet? Might have been his 13th.
Personally age doesn't interest me, behaviour does. I've seen grown adults behave in ways that has had them kicked from corp or occasionally banned from the game. As long as your behaviour is reasonable, I don't even care how old you are.

You know, just from going off of your post you sound more mature than many older players I've known. As long as you are mature in conduct and don't go off like some younger kids tend to when they play games, you will likely be able to have just as much fun as you want to.
I started playing when I was 15, and I've never run into too many issues; just be mature about a game like EVE and it'll all work out fine
Another thing - EVE is amazing; just don't let it consume you! I knew people in hs whose grades dropped like stones once they started playing. This game is the best game you'll ever play, but do other things too

Not sure what you mean by this comment.. "- and for some reason this seems to be the case for female EvE players too." In my 2 years playing Eve I've never once had an issue being teased over my voice or being a female player. It wouldn't surprize me if it does happen, but it has never happened to me. Besides, as with any social, online game everyone should be prepared for some fun and some degree of trolling and tom foolery. It's all part of the experience.
But as you said, it's not meant to be taken personally..and if the intent is personal..well, you don't want to be flying with them anyways. It's not about age, but maturity. Judging by the OP's post, he types and sounds more mature than a great deal of the players I have encountered during my eve career.
@ the OP...you'll be fine. Eve is a great game and has some great people in it..but like anything, there are always those "others". But yeah, Coms are crucial to successful opperations. No one is gonna type everything in the heat of battle. Look around for a good corp..try to get to know the members before you join. You'll know when you find the right one.
If I had a nickel for every time someone said women don't play eve, I'd have a bag of nickels to whack the next person who said it..

It's been said before, but I'll say it again to drive it home. You don't write as a 14yo would be expected to write. And that is all that matters. Until you get into Teamspeak world, your only essential RL attribute displayed in game is what you say in text, and how you say it.
You keep typing like you're doing, and you don't need to declare your true age, you could even lie about it if you wanted - RL is not a requirement of EVE.
One of my best recruits was also 14 when he joined the game, and shortly after the corp. He said he was 16. We got the hint when he stayed 16 for two years ... but it didn't matter one bit.
The one word of advice though, as you are young, be aware of the RL aspect of the people you speak with. Don't give out any personal details, etc. Whle I've not heard of any dodge people stalking people off EVE, there can always be a first.
Most up, enjoy the game, and indulge. JOin a corp, see how it works out, ... and move until you find one that you work well with. I'll guarantee that you'll find much older people who are far less mature than you are. :)

There is most definitely some bias against anyone under the age of 18 (and sometimes 21 if you're in the states :P). I started when I was 17, approaching 2 years now. However just because you're young doesn't mean you can't make a difference in engagements, and if you prove to be valuable you're going to get respect, and to be valuable isn't hard so as long as you listen and follow orders.
That said, the founder of Celestial Horizon, the guys who made Steve, the first titan, was 14 if I remember correctly.

Don't worry OP, I was in the same boat three years ago. Like everyone says, don't be an idiot and be respectful when it applies. On the other hand, there are creatures called basement dwellers. You can find one by looking in-game or on the forums crying about crap that doesn't matter.
or literally any MMO forum for that matter.
|

Mr Epeen wrote:I see a lot of prejudice in this thread and I'm not sure why. Mr Epeen You generalise too much, some of us have been gaming on computers of one sort or another since the early 80's; I don't see a lot of prejudice either, the OP comes across as a mature individual and that is reflected in the replies.

I started playing eve-online at age of 15, and after 2 month my application got accepted to a good corp. I think those corps who set an age requirement to aply to them, are bad corps. I have seen so much far more inteligent kid then adult. So don't give up and keep try to find a good corp. |

I agree age is not the factor, maturity is. However, a lot of corps have age limits, such as 18, to avoid issues that may arise from any speak, tom foolery, or general douchebaggery in the presence of a minor. Just my opinion..and experience, on the matter. A lot of what goes on on TS/mumble/vent is adult coversation/language....not that they don't hear it elsewhere. I certainly wouldn't want my child hearing half of what goes on in some of the coms I've been in.
If I had a nickel for every time someone said women don't play eve, I'd have a bag of nickels to whack the next person who said it..

Age isn't much of a concern regarding EVE. Of course some people may think they have a better way of understanding things than others. Personally I began to play EVE when I was 13-14 years old which is 6 years ago, since then I have learned a lot, and it doesn't seem as anybody has found out about it. So as long as you post constructively and act mature, you should be fine. |
