Edited by: Kaligula on 22/10/2003 23:06:44 Ok so our corp moved out into 0.0 space to kick it up a notch. Now I find that I am one of only 2 people from my corp that is either A.ever on when I play or B.didnt even move out there cause they were scared/thought it would be too hard.
So the problem stands as this...how does a SOLO miner operate in 0.0 space using a Dominix with 6 M2's and full harvies/heavies and keep mining eff up as high as possible? Every belt you go to has 3 to 4 6-10K rats and even sometimes a 20k stuck in the mix for fun.
A few ideas I came up with....but havent tried any yet... 1. Just mine straight into your hold and then manually bring back to dock (either same system or use the 1 jump "ninja jump" bug) 2. Mine till full...warp out to a can someplace safe and have a hauler alt do pick ups from there. (Problem is I get bumped around so much with missiles that it takes 25 seconds to actually warp out most times. And then you have to warp back and re-position yurself every 2 mins or so.) 3. Mine straight to a secure can in belt and ignore the rats while you mine. Then once the secures are full, clear the belt and bring in the hauler. (Problem here is that you then cut down on your mining eff since you need to carry weapons to kill 5 rats and again the missiles will keep knocking you out of drop range for the can AND what if the rats spawn while your hauler is in the belt?)
Thats the only ways I could come up with unless I just hire a guard to take the rats while I mine....still risking the hauler from time to time since the rats can spawn where ever they like it seems out here. Any suggestions? How do YOU do it? Thanks,

Perhaps now would be the time to invest in 2 accounts and 2 computers - lol...
BTW - I have just over 2m skill pts (also with a Dominix, 8 heavy drones) and while I have just moved into a 0.4 system I am almost always mining 0.8 systems for money... maybe I am missing something but... I just cannot see many reasons to even be in a 0.4 system other than to get my cruiser banged up a bit whenever 4 NPC rats choose to show-up - lol.
Once you have 2 accounts, the 2nd account needs to be an Indy driver - I prefer the Bestower myself, hold the belt using your 8 heavy combat drones (6 ogres + 2 preators) and then whenever the belt is clear warp in your Indy and haul away. I find I can easily fill a giant secure can during the time it takes my alt's Indy to warp 1 jump into the next system over to dump the ore and collect the isk. Sometimes I use 2 giant secure cans - it all depends on how busy the system is in which I mine.

Have 3 accounts actually but would rather not risk more then 2 toons in the same belt for lag/ctd issues.
As for the reason I am there...it isnt ISK. Its to maintain my production lines and keep the ISK inbound. I am one of those producers that believes its best to limit my cost as much as possible to keep prices down.

First, if no one else is ever on period then I would switch to a different corp. Unless you 'like' running the game solo with no one to talk too and such. Not my bag though.
Second, its always about the isk whether you are minning your own ore/minerals or not... If whatever you are selling is selling for less than it costs for you to make it then there isn't a point in selling it. Even if you mine your own ore, you are better off selling the minerals/ore.

I've been mining with a Thorax in 0.0 space like you are describing. Using 4-5 decent cargo-expanders, 3 medium ion blasters and 2 250mm rails, the usual med slot stuff and 8 harverster drones I was mining not all that bad imho. Supposedly in a Dominix I dont think you have to worry at all, know you NPC faction and add the corresponding shield hardners for it (like Serpentis: Thermal + Kinetic). Personally I wouldnt use drones for defense as they will be targetted first and sortoff dispatched accordingly You may wanna sacrifice a hi-slot for a big bad blaster and use a big bad smart bomb.

My problem is not the rats. Its what do you feel is the best way too mine effectively? Haul it away in the Dom? Or just fill the Dom and bring it to a can some place else?
I can take the rats np...but is it more effective to kill the rats myself and mine in the belt or just ignore them and haul the ore out myself?

Mining solo is pretty pointless in low sec. I would tell you to join another corp, or hook up with another corp's mining op and help mine with them for a cut of the end price.
Otherwise, start booting members from your corp until they get the picture you're serious and want them out there.
If you want to stick with your corp, you will need to show them you can make lots of money doing group mining ops. Get everything organised, set an op for a day or two away and tell them to be there. If they don't show, boot one and see if the others want to stick around.
Either way, they are useless to you, get rid of the dead weight. Before you do, remember, you can easily kill and pod them before you kick them. Do that once or twice and see what your activity goes to. ------------------- Basic truths? Idiots make us rich. - Some people are only alive because it is illegal to kill them. |

Man, use combat drones. And you don't need 2 accounts or 2 computers.

It quite easy.
You can either leave your ships on a mid space bookmark, eg your battleship stays on mining station, while your hauling back, and versa while your mining.
Or you can use an alt to haul.
Just quick swap, set a decent 5k bookmark on your can, and get it in and out of there before any rats show up.
Because hybrids suck i need every gun i can get firing, thus i use 9 harvesters, 18 units of bist a min, averaging out say a 550 cargo carried.
Might not be greatly effecient in speed, but then neither is doing 40 jumps out into 0.0 either, ohh and it pays if your looking to build your own battleships, like i do. ------------------------

Depending on where you are mining you can give me a shout and hook up with us sometime.

The to do it is to anchor giant cans at the roid fields, fill 'em up in your BS and then make good jump-in markers to collect 'em with your Indy, before the rats get you.
If you mine with only 2 people in deep space, place the giant cans at a planet in a tight cluster, then get the 'courier' to take the ore there. You can transfer it to a station later while 'afk' transporting (ie. just setting course/fill/return). | Join eve-webring.com to promote your site. |

My solution :
I repeatedly mine in 0.0 space with my thorax - 6-10k rats.
I just fill a can (27000m3), remembering to refresh it after each rat raid, and after each hour passed.
When done will i switch to Indy and haul it all in. Takes me 2.7 trips. Only prob is when i enter with my indy and find rats at the scene.
Efficiently .. not as much as being 2+ ppl on it.

Kaligula, If you need help give me a holler will mine with you in my Megathron I also have heavy Wasp drones I use for protection or 4 425 mm hybrid weapons and a heavy missile launcher that does serious damage. If you like to join forces, At the moment we are mining in a 0.5 security zone getting the rest of the minerals to start production on the Acply bs.

Mine and kill rats until you have enough to fill your indy, then kill the last rats and switch to your hauler. Use bookmarks so you drop right in ontop of your can. Rinse and repeat. That's what I would do if I had to solo mine.

Being new, bookmarking still is a bit of a mystery.
Would someone be good enough to detail the process of bookmarking so that you drop right on top of your destination. I always end up short.

Open up people and places below your character screen on the left. Go the the "Places" tab which will be your bookmarks.
First, bookmark your can and unload at the station. Second, warp to the bookmark of your can. Third, find out where you warped in in relation to the can, then go about 15k-20k onto the other side of the can.
Fourth, Load up and go dock at the station.
Fifth, warp to your new bookmark.
After the fifth step you should get in right on top of it, if not, modify your bookmark until you do, or you think it's good enough. ------------------- Basic truths? Idiots make us rich. - Some people are only alive because it is illegal to kill them. |

I've had similar issues where I've found myself alone. If you're mining for isk, then you're actually better off back in secure space mining Omber or Kernite, as it's easier to mine and haul. But, if you need the high ore, then you may be forced to mine alone sometimes. I typically mine to a can until I get the load I want, then ferry the ore to a safe bubble in space. After dropping a fresh tainer, I high tail it back to pick up my indy and haul the goods back having to deal only with the gate camping NPC or PC pirates. Good luck!

Keep in mind- if you ARE going to haul stuff out without cover, make sure you're equipped with MWD or a warp stabiliser- if the rats can't catch your indy, they can't pop it. --
