So it is coming out now 11 of the 12 balls the Patriots had during this weekends Championship game were 2 pounds short of air. Those numbers alone make them guilty. Also they cant claim innocence either due to the fact these guys hold the ball all day erryday.
On the same token between plays the Ref's toss the balls in and out of play. shouldn't they notice the difference in pound pressure? Since a lineman on the opposite team is the one who can forward.
I like the PATS but this seems a little strange on all accounts.
say what you will but atleast nascar does a pre and post race car check. maybe the NFL will be gin to check the balls before and after the game. |

It's amazing how hearsay can spark the most empty head into spasms of moral rectitude.
Some things to consider:
A) Quarterback Aaron Rodgers admitted to CBS reporters prior to the NFL division championship that he overinflates the balls that he uses. They said as much on the air.
B) Similarly, Eli Manning has previously admitted to the New York media that he deflates the balls.
C) There is absolutely no proof that the Patriots ordered the deflation (though I have little doubt that they did).
The problem is that people are looking at this and gagging, when the reality on the ground is much different: manipulation of the balls is so common in the NFL that the officials -- who handled the balls throughout Sunday's game -- were so accustomed to dealing with equipment that had been tampered with that they didn't even bat and eye. Remember: the officials HANDLE THE BALL EVERY PLAY. They had to know they were deflated. Let me say that again: the officials knew the balls were deflated and did not care.
So... why didn't the officials stop the game then and there? Because it is common practice.
So why, then, is this a big stink? Because the Indiapolis Colts got their teeth kicked in on national television, and a bitter member of their staff decided to share an open secret with Bobby Kravitz, one of the most openly-biased shills in "professional" journalism.
EVERYONE knew this was going on. EVERYONE DOES THIS. But that won't stop idiots from going berserk over it, just like it didn't stop the bitter Indianapolis staff from 'tipping off' Kravitz, knowing exactly where it would lead.
Sour grapes. That's all this is. |

If by fun, you mean boring....yeah I agree.
I did spent 5 months in the States and I still don't see how people can endure watching Handegg (cause soccer as the Yanks call it is the true Football) or Baseball. After 5 minutes, you just go and do something more useful with your time.

Can someone tell me why this wouldn't immediately disqualify them? Instead, they are charged a minimum $25,000 and might forfeit some draft picks. It seems a little unjust if the balls were deflated for nefarious purposes.
Or is it -not- that big of a deal in terms of on-field performance? Surely if it was, the Colts would have said something during the game?

http://espn.go.com/boston/story/_/id/12202450/nfl-says-new-england-patriots-had-inflated-footballs-afc-championship-game
Quote: Sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Wednesday that the Colts had concerns about underinflated balls after their regular-season game against the visiting Patriots on Nov. 16.
During that game, Colts safety Mike Adams twice intercepted Tom Brady and gave the balls to the Colts' equipment manager to save -- and both times there were concerns about the balls feeling underinflated, sources told Schefter.
Those sources said the Colts raised concerns to the league, which was aware of the issue going into this weekend's AFC title game.
It's a pretty big deal in cold or wet weather conditions, a deflated ball is easier to grip making it easier to keep possession of it when tackled and easier to throw.
Wouldn't have made a difference in the AFC tittle game, one Colts player said: Quote: Dwayne Allen G£ö @Dallen83
@NFLonFOX not a story. They could have played with soap for balls and beat us. Simply the better team. We have to continue to build! #BTM 12:55 AM - 21 Jan 2015 But it's still cheating and i agree that the penalty should be harsher than 25 thousand dollars (nfl players have 25k worth of change in their car ash trays) and a few draft picks. |

Funny - I was having this very discussion with a friend earlier.
According to Wolfram Alpha and some knowledge of the ideal gas law, PV = NRT, it turns out that even if they inflated the balls indoors at 75F temperature and took them outside into 40F, the pressure drop from a minimally inflated 12.5 psi ball would only drop to 11.68 psi - less than 1 psi under the legal limit.
However, it was 51F at kickoff, warmer than average, and the balls were found to be around 2 psi under-inflated. They would've had to inflate those balls inside a 120+F sauna ahead of time to get anywhere near a 2 psi drop in pressure.
Somebody pushed the limit a little too far and got caught.
Man I love the internet and geeky webpages like Wolfram Alpha :)
I find that without a good mob to provide one for them, most people would have no mentality at all.

The dumb thing is that the NFL has each team provide its own balls. (When you're on offense, you use your own ball). Why not have the league provide the balls, like they do in baseball and basketball?
What makes this incident more fun is that it's second offense by the coach and the team. The first one was spygate, where they were videotaping other teams' defensive signals and building a database. The team got fined $250,000 and Coach Bilichek got fined $500,000 for that. He claimed he didn't know he was doing anything wrong, he was just being meta.

Don't lose faith! They made it to the NFL at least... that's a big first step. Look at the Browns, they actually won games this year and came dangerously close to the playoffs. You can do it!
