Ok so I am out giving my probes a go. I see a Geddon and Tempest safespotted and try to track them down. I narrow them down using the regular scanner. I get a 5 degree lock, and see they are approx. 7AU away from me.
So I unload 3 12AU scan probes and wait. It comes back with nothing. Meanwhile the 2 BS are still in my 5 degree scan.
I toss out some 48AU scan probes and give it a whirl. Still nada. Yet they are still showing on my scanner with a 5 degree range.
I close the scanner and re-open it just in case its gone buggy. I get the same results. I log back out and back in, then I use the regular scanner and do a 360 scan for the helluvit, and I still see them. I give the 12AU probes a go. Nada again. I try the 48AU probes and once again, nada.
Look at the pic. Am I missing something here or doing something wrong? Or is the scanner gone loco? How is it I can see them on a short range scan, but if I use a medium range probe, I get nothing back?

The name of a probe is related to the scanning DIAMETER, the scanning RADIUS is only half that. So a 12AU probe can only scan 6AU in any direction.

You have to form a triangle around the guys you are scanning for with the three scan probes. ___________________

I've never had to drop 3 of them to triangulate and get a result back.
If what you say is correct, that the radius is half the diameter, then when I used the 48AU probe, they should've shown up on the scanner. Look at my scanners range in that pic. It's set to about 6-7AU.
Really using the long range probes should detect items out of range of the normal scanner since that maxes at 15AU or so if I am not mistaken.
I had them in my line of sight, I had them within 7AU and none of my probes would pick them up.

Yes, you can get results if the target is less than one AU away from the probe without triangulating. This applies to all probes.
EDIT: With the exception of Observator Probe, of course. ___________________

afaik it's only 50mio km (~ 0.3AU) ... to work from one spot ... but getting that close can sometimes be a pita ___________________

Edited by: Farjung on 24/09/2006 21:34:38 Being able to drop three 3AU probes in the same place, while vastly more efficient most of the time, is also not the intended way to do it, and you generally have to be sub 0.5 AU (I generally don't bother until I'm sub 40 mill km from target) to get consistent results.
The way you're meant to be doing it with the longer range probes is to drop the probes in three locations to form a triangle that encompasses the target. The fact that this is often a lot slower, more expensive, and less reliable than the drop bookmarks until you can launch three 3AU in the same spot method for in the plane safepots is by the by ;p.

In order to get scan probes to work, you have to stand on one leg, hum the icelandic national anthem, and sacrifice a small goat to the full moon whilst wearing no clothes. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Lies.
You need to do it twice.
