Edited by: Xantia Gedur on 28/09/2006 11:58:57 People who use the term 'rap music' are the same type of people that know nothing about it and are often quick to cast judgement.
Rap is the style of rhyming with words which is colliqually also used to label the genre. Hip-Hop is the combination of Rap, Music (commonly samples) and culture.
So trying to catogorise Hip-hop or Rap as Rap Music just makes you look ignorant, its not a term that can be used so simply nor compared comparativly to other genres.

And on a second note...beauty is in the eye of the beholder

The best rap music tells a story. (just like country music, but different) The Notorious B.I.G. is an example of this. He rapped about crime, drugs, and other stuff along those lines. the reason he wrote AND rapped about that stuff, is because that was what he LIVED before (and probably some during) when he was a rapper.
To me, all music is a form of expression. Personally, I like MOST types of music, Country, Rap, Rock, etc, etc, the list goes on.
I can't STAND IT when some ASS HAT decides that whatever type of music he doesn't like "isn't music". Who the hell do you think you are to tell ANYONE what music is?
Get over yourself, your opinion on what IS or ISN'T music means nothing, because to be honest, it doesn't matter. When banging trash cans on a street corner is music, anything can be.

*sigh*
Fisrtly obviously only 1 or 2 posters in this thread know the difference between rap and hip hop.
Secondly, i think the destiction should be made between mainstream and 'true' rap/hip hop. Alot of whats heard by the average joe, is the mainstream rubbish pumped out to make money, simple fact. People lap it up because of its contrversial lyrics, and catchy beat.
Real/true or whatever u wanna call it, rap/hip hop has more of a story to tell, more of the artist looking into him/herself providing an insight into thier experiences of love hate etc, for example one of my favorite rappers Cormega
