Forgive my noobish ignorance, but there really doesn't seem to be much benefit for me in smuggling illegal goods across the Gallente/Caldari border. The smuggler missions my agent gives out are expensive, and offer only minimal profits. Transporting cheap small arms right across the border into Caldari systems has proven fruitless, as there are no buyers in the region. Am I missing some special skill that allows one to sell illegal goods at a station, or must I simply shuttle around Gallente worlds looking for a buyer who will let me break even? |

You aren't see a profit because there isn't one.
No skill lets you place items into a regional market that are illegal in that region, and no item that is illegal in ANY region can be placed into escrow.
Those offers mostly exist to make sure that not all the offers are any good.

There are markets for these goods and pretty much any other illegal goods, however you have to understand that risk is the key in penetrating these markets. Small arms are not illegal in Gallente space but it is awash with them, they are often given as mission rewards for example. In this case there are at least two other corporations that purchase them both belong to pirate factions, however, and are based in 0.0 sec space. If you have enough small arms and a nice escort for a freighter you could make enough cash in a couple of trips to pay all involved a couple of hundred mil on the deal. I guess we are back to the solo player versus group play dynamic and as a group you may earn more cash each compared to solo.

Any suggestions on how I can recover from this investment? I have half a million (which may be peanuts for you experienced players, but for me its a third of my wealth) tied up in small arms and protein delicacies which I had hoped to smuggle between Caldari and Gallente stations. Can I just sell it back at break-even price? Should I hang onto it and put out sell orders in other regions?

Hmm, if you can get access to sydicate that looks like the place to sell them. NPC buyers at just under 1500 isk p/u.
