As I am sure many noticed and experienced, sometimes CCP's announcements about patches can be gone unnoticed, like happend to me this time.
The reason for this, is that not all players check the stickies of the General section of the forums, or the in-game news DAILY, and hence can miss such announcement, which in my case this time, caused me loss of 5 and half hours of training time
Anyway, this thread is not about the lost time, but rather how to make the announcement effective:
Why not make a mailing list, to which we can subscribe and recieve alerts of such downtimes. I am sure that many, as myself - check their mail much more frequently than the sticky or in-game news.
Another idea is sms alert subscription, where we can recieve alerts via cell phone: I know this is possible and easily, because in our university we can recieve alerts via sms about homeworks, lecture changes, in addition to email alerts.
I hope CCP add such way of alerting us of patches in the future, to prevent such unpleasant surprises :( ------------------ Help save the Deimos!

This was an Emergency path unfortunately. Ideally patches are announced weeks in advance.

CCP apologised for the unusual , non standard patch announcement, it seemed to be a patch that had to go in ASAP, so many missed it.
I figure you could announce the emergancy patch in every medium possible and you would still have players who missed it and would complain, I can can only sympathise and cheer you up with a 'least its signs that CCP are doing something to try sort out the issues on Tranquility, so a little downtime is / should be acceptable '
I for one would much rather lose a little gametime due to patching than a lot of gametime due to waiting for patching if the issue the patch corrects is a big issue. Some learn painlessly, others have to be taught ...painfully. |

Generally I agree, however this doesnt mean that more mediums of alerting about patches shouldnt be also made avialable for those who wish to use them... ------------------ Help save the Deimos!

This was a patch we felt was needed urgently enough to not delay on its deployment. It was announced with the means at our disposal.
SMS notifications are something we are looking at with the EVE Mobile client. As Yantar pointed out, the Feeds page is another option.

Thanks, I'll use this one for now.

Thats nice option, but what about email mailing list? Will only take the sysadmin 5 mins to setup mailing list.. plenty of good open source clients which will serve the purpose extremly well. ------------------ Help save the Deimos!

The front page of the website would be an option surely? Or a one off popup message when a user logs in would be another option?
I spotted it early but thats only 'cos I read the dev blogs.

Blasting out 130,000 email messages every time there is a patch, or downtime problem or whatever is not exactly a great use of bandwidth.
I would think it would be better to have a news section properly split into OOP and In character sections. Have the OOP section read like a blog and list any and all unusual happenings like patches, extended downtimes and node/server crashes.
But thats just me.
We all know this website could use some orginization and optimization. But frankly, I'd rather they work on the game first. ___________________________________________ The deeper you stick it in your vein, the deeper the thoughts there's no more pain. ___________________________________________

The patch seems to have done wonders for the game and fixed some issues. It is worth any inconvenience.

If people can't be bothered to read the blurbs on the right of the character select screen, can't be bothered to check the General Area of the forums, can't spend 30 seconds a day checking the In Game News section, what makes you think that an email will solve all the problems. Likely they won't be checking their email either.

How about when a patch is soon to be released ( even if it is short notice ) why not have a popup show when you login?
It would be just like the new build available but instead it would say something along the lines of:
ATTENTION
New patch will be applyed to the server etc etc etc
NOTE: This message will show up intill patch is deployed, if you do not want to see this notice again click here.
Then everytime there is a new patch people can see it in a popup long term planned or short notice. If it is a long term patch though since people will have more time to read about within 3-4 days of the patch being released send the popup as a fast reminder.
