Stop me if this is the wrong place to suggest ideas.
Just had a conversion ingame with some of my corp. A guy named Hakwea asked why you can't customise the appearance of your ship - we all spend long enough looking at them.
If you could add custom decals - say corp on one side, personal on other (I'm thinking of caldari ships but it could apply to any race). Then if they cause lag for a particular player he/she could turn them off in the options menu.
Similar idea for ship colours - most seem two/three colour bands - so the ability to choice say background/strip colour could make thing look a little better, no?

the logos (corp) is going to be put onto your ship with the KALI patch (or it should be)
as for the colours idea, i have since gone off of it due to having the ability to change colours is somewhat confusing, a black raven? thats a navy raven, black megathron? vindicator, you see my point?
it makes it harder to differentiate between ships.

I dunno. I've always kinda wanted to have a pink raven for the "WTF" factor. Plus maybe to get Eris' attention

The thing is,; it would cripple even more fleet battles. Imagine a 50-men gang jumping a gate, when another 50-men gang awaits just on the other side. If every pilot have a custom-textured ship, it would be 50 more texture to load in cache : "Hello emergency warp".
This could furtherly be exploited to create even more lag. I mean, every day you change your skin and so on ...
Sounds interesting however, but sounds titanic to implement to me

I hadn't heard that the corp decals were to be implented in Kali but it's good to hear.
As for custom textures I agree that would cause to much lag to load. I was thinking more along the lines of Homeworld and like - where you can pick the background colour (block) for two sections of ship - general colour of hull plus another colour for highlights
Limited the plate to the preloaded platet (maybe 64 colours) should reduce potential lag while still giving some choice.
As for recognition - thats half the fun - a paint job is a paint not a indication of how effective a ship is 
Some of us might even try to pass a tech 1 ship off as a tech 2 at a glance ( or visa vesa  )
