Im looking at a new Cruiser to supplement/replace my Omen, mostly for mining in low sec systems. Needs to carry more mining/combat drones than the Omen and pref come with a missile launcher.
Im Amarrian, so the Arbitrator is an obvious choice, but i also like the idea of the Celestis (Gallentine). Both are cheap, both carry Launcher points, both carry drones, the Arb far more thatn the Celt, but Celt has more Large and Med slots and 2 missile points.
Im fully trained in Energy, Hybrid and Missiles...so im open to suggestions, would need to train on Gallentine ships but thats not really a major hassle.
I know both ships are unloved and folk will tell me use a Thorax, but i wanna be different.
Opinions on a postcard please folks.

Get a vexor, or the otehr gallente ship(exuregor or soemthing liek that) vexor i wld recommend. if u r gonna mine in low sec places, get heavy drones also, or mroe drones. arnd 9 wld be good. Use hammer heads to defend u in a vexor (1400 space) carry 14 of them incase u lsoe some. vexor is a decent ship, 4 beams and fairly large droens bay. Celestis si a combat ship, and i think is a lot more profitable when u kill 20`s and 30k`s http://coldfusion.online-guild.com |

A Celestis :) Decent cargo-room, some lo-slot for high level Nanofibers or Cargo-Expanders. The choice you have to make I guess is whether you want to mine using mining lasers or mining drones, that'll dictate your hi-slots I suppose.

Arb and Celt are better for hunting not mining. If you plan to make a drone miner, get a Vexor instead. Can't beat the combination of four turrets, four low slots, both high cargo and drone space.
An Arb is a great ship for fighting, especially if you got the drone skills. 2 heavy beams with Multi or Radio Ms (or keep both), one H-50 launcher, one smartbomb and a bunch of heavy drones.
The Celt is a real fighter too. A good config has 3 250mm railguns and 2 H-50 launchers.

Both better for fighting? hmm im using an Omen for that, id considered both these to be weaker than that.
Both are certainly cheaper to buy.

I got an Omen too and I really doubt what you said. The Omen certainly has more turret power, but once the Arb gets those Heavy Drones out---1500m2 drone space makes it second only to the Thorax---there is no comparison. In addition, that H-50 launcher can pack some big missiles.
The Celestis too packs some real punch. I could pack 3 250mm railguns on it and get a damage bonus out of them. Then you have 2 H-50 launchers that can pack some big missiles. On top of that, you got 800m2 of drone space to unleash.
Both ships if properly done, can unleash hell in even terms with level 3 cruisers.

U nuts? If the battle involves drones, the Arb would win over the Celt. But then it is hard to beat a ship with more drones, so this puts the Thorax on top of the heap.
But ship to ship, no drones, the Celt would own the Arb anytime with 3 250mm rails with damage bonus and two launchers, vs. an Arb with 2 heavy beams and one H-50.

I'd probably buy a Celestis over an Arbitrator. The Celestis has more shields, is much faster, and has much better firepower. I've owned a few Arbitrators and they're good for turning heads when you're flying through a busy system but not much for anything else important.

Currently im just using Scout Drones, Infiltrators and Hammerheads, or mining drones, so heaps of drone space isnt as important..more than my Omen would be nice though as it tajkes 3 large scouts at most.
Gotta say the fact i have spare Med Rails and blasters free tilts me towards the Celt.

If you want to mine in 0.0 space, I would suggest neither the Arb or the Cele. I've owned a Cele, not a particularly useful mining ship. However, the Cele is a great combat ship. With the right person at the helm, should be able to give a Thorax a serious run for its money, and it works very well against 20k and 30k rats.

ta for all the comments...
one thing i dont understand..whys it not a good miner. With 3 slots to take miner1s/gaussiams etc and a bay full of mining drones it seems pretty solid to me.
Backed up by the 2 missile launchers just in case and it would appear pretty good.

yes my omen can take 4 miners, but it cant carry as many drones and with 4 miners on has no means of defending itself.

I love my Celestis, all three of the ones I have lost I lament every day
With 3 Miner I's and 8 Harveys, you would be left with just missiles for defense.
I prefer using turrets for defence when mining in a group (No random splash to friends, or thier drones).
As for the Arbitrator I can't fly amarr cruisers so haven't looked Your Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 218.0 damage.

Edited by: Syme on 27/10/2003 13:22:26 I love my Celestis and, after my indy, it is the ship that I use most.
Look to fit 150protos and the damage can be as good as straight 250s and with decent hit rates at close quarters. This will save you some grid for low slots items other than hull conversions.
I have to admit that when I do mine (which is rarely) my Thorax is rolled out of the hangar.

I've been using the Celestis as a Deep Space miner. I'm using 3 mining lasers, and putting defender missles in the missle slots. With an AB, and shield booster in the mid slots, I can out distance most NPC guns, and the defenders take care of the missles. I mined for 2 weeks 50 jumps from a station were the NPC were spawning 4 Caracals and a MOA in a group, and had no problems getting away.

Celestis
HI : 2 Miner 2's, 1 250mm rail and 2 malkuth Incursion launchers w / widowmakers
MED : 1 MWD, 1 small shield booster and 1 cap rechager
LOW : 1 Diagnostic, 3 Nanofibers ( parial hull or greater )
2 Heavy Drones for supplemented Defense and 4 basic mining drones ( cheap and expendable - get the blueprint )
This might be the perfect setup for single cruiser mining in Dangerous territory.

Love my Celestis, named "Maria Celeste". She's been with me since July, and a very lucky ship that escaped destruction from CTDs while hunting, as well as being ambushed by NPC swarms. Her last adventure was successfully escaping from Concord forces when she accidentally splashed someone.
She mounts 3 250mm rails and 2 H-50 launchers, keeping some Heavy drones and light scout drones in her bay as a backup.
And for question on the Arbitrator setup, I would set up one like:
High slots
Two Heavy Beams (or named versions) with Multi M as the turrets.
or Two Heavy Pulses with Radio M.
H-50 launcher or named equivalent.
Smarbomb (small preferred over med or micro) for additional defense.
Med Slots
Medium Shield Booster
EM shield hardener (Photon Scatterer but preferably Annointed EM ward if you can find one)
A Capacitor or Cap recharger
Low Slots
One Heat Sink 1 (better yet Extruded or Skadi heat sinks if you can find or afford one)
Relays, diags on the rest to keep your energy well supplied.
I wish to add some comments on the Arbitrator since the patch.
Since the patch it has become a much stronger ship. Lasers are definitely stronger, missiles are cheaper and faster, and heavy drones have become cheaper and more available. It appears to have sold considerably better though it's still not easy to see a player flown one.
There are lots of Arbs working as NPCs either as Blood pirates or sentry ships with Amarr, Sarum, Khanid, and Ammatar navies. What is interesting is that depending on the navy it belongs to, the color of the ship is different. Sarum uses blue colored Arbs while Ammatar uses black colored Arbs for example.
