I've just been doing some calculations to put up a medium tower with a medium reactor array on it to generate a simple reaction.
So I designed the POS as two moon harvesters connected via two coupling arrays to a medium reactor. The reactor is then connected via a coupling array to a silo.
Sounds simple and follows the general design principle of most POS' on this forum, but this design requires 3465tf, which is more than the Minmatar, Amarr and Gallente Medium POS' generate. Only the Caldari generates more at 3500tf, but then this only leaves 35tf for defenses (a cruise missile launcher requires 40tf)
Even dropping the Coupling Arrays brings the total CPU to 3000tf, but then the Amarr Medium POS still can't handle it as it only generates 2750tf of CPU.
So, what's the point of having a Medium Reactor Array, if you can't fit it to a medium POS?
You could either raise the CPU output of the towers or decrease the CPU requirements of the medium reactor, possibly down to 750tf.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

Well. If you took out one of the moon harvestor it WOULD fit. Wouldn't it? I think I spotted the fatal flaw. --------------

Yes but as a simple reaction needs two inputs and a silo has the same CPU need as a harvester....exactly how would your sugestion allow the use of a simple reactor at a medium tower?

Use coupling arrays and fill often?
Or even run two poses.
or he can get the Caldari one.
The fact is, Gilgamoth is trying to squeeze too much onto a medium pos and he wants to fit more he needs a large pos or another pos to run his reactions on, especially if he wishes to maintain good defences. --------------

Erm, I think you're missing the point...
A reactor needs two inputs and an output. Even something as simple as three silos and a reactor comes to 3000tf CPU, so how can I split it across 2 POS'?
Yes I could get the Caldari one, and yes I could run a large one, but that's not my point. My point is that in the majority of cases the Medium Reactor Array requires too much CPU and can't be fitted on a Medium POS.

The easiest method is to drop the coupling arrays. They act as buffers when swapping things around but are not required with a little care.
The tower will always cycle at the same time, if you complete your offlining and onlining of silos within the middle of the cycle then you lose no production time.
Thus you can get away with a medium reactor, two harvesters (or silos) and a silo for the output. All for only 3,000 Tf. Which all of the medium towers bar the Amarrian will supply.
Amarrians just have to suffer.

No, it isn't the majority of cases, because the majority of people who want to run reactors plan ahead and don't choose an Amarr POS.
Amarr POSes are great for defense due to their (compared to other POSes) high powergrid numbers, but not good for mining/production. If you want to mine/produce with your POS, don't use an Amarr one. If you want to hold sov somewhere and give someone's dreadys a headache, consider Amarr for the grid, although depending on your exact defense strategy another race may still prove better.. ------------ Ezra Cornell pe0n, Calista Industries |
