Edited by: Pattern Clarc on 30/09/2006 02:04:23 I just read MCs report on the 9UY events and i'd like to say good job to all those who took part.
However, I would have thought that 50 fighter drones would have been able to take down a dread in short order.
Now that I know for a fact that a gank fitted Megathron happly out damages any carrier set up, I begin to question the carriers worth in any sort of role other than (command/gang bonuses and a logisitics stick).
Fine, dreads are the tanks and the ganks of the EvE universe, and are completely useless without a support fleet. However I would have thought that 50 fighters, (3-4 carriers) would have been sufficient to deal with a seiged dread, already tanking a large POS. Since i'm going down the commandship/carrier route, I value the gang bonuses highly, but FFS - fighters need a DPS boost, right now there is no justification for even unloading them, as you'd lose them faster than the rate of ships you'd take out.

You also need to take into account the other support that the dreads might have had. Such as armor repair drones, shield transfer arrays, plus the other active ships hitting the fighters themselves. Logistic ships are made for just this type of support work as well. So you're not just trying to bust the tank on the dread in many cases, but also those basilisks and rep-domi's that are helping keep it alive.
While I don't know for sure if that is what happened, I can only assume that a veteran fleet such as MC would be using a very well organized support fleet that would be capable of doing just that.

Think someone posted the math that it would take 100 fighters to break the tank of a seiged double armor repped dread.
20 mil * 100 = 2 bil, same cost as the dread (and ignoring the cost of the carriers).
Pretty crappy results...

No, you can't remote repair a dread while it's in siege mode.
Which is complete bolix... the only thing a supporting carrier is good for in a POS fight is dropping more strontium

edit: carriers, motherships, titans ( ) need a built-in mini siege mode (for tanking and dmg), or we'll never properly see them in the frontline.
Likewise industerials need a built in seige mode or we won't be seeing them at the frontline either. But then again, maybe that is not the intended purpose of the ship. Dreads do a fine job of tearing apart POS's and carriers do a fine job of chewing up a support fleets BS's. All ships have their role, no point in turning one class of vessel into a tanking, fighter spewing, POS pwning death machine. |

We need Bombers Missile lobbing Fighters that are crap for nuking normal stuff, but will help nuke a PoS or take down other capitals.

the trick is, you dont have to break a dread's tank in siege mode. wait for it to come out first, it wont be going anywhere in the meantime. but if you cant wait that long get some BS to help. afterall thats what a support fleet is for.

The devs have already said they're doing something about moving carriers ships more into the frontline as opposed to assigning fighters from inside a POS. That was my idea, what's yours?
Yeah I figured as much.
