In one of the coming releases, the devs have stated that they are integrating the F10 map with normal space, which is accessible by scrolling out from your ship.
So does this mean it would be possible to have travel animations when passing through jumpgates? In other words, we could actually follow the flash of light you see springing from the gate when you jump to the next system. I think this would obviously improve seamlessness as well as immersion and not to mention spatial awareness of where you actually are and are going.
The only problem I could see is the transition from node to node, but I imagine it would be possible to make the client handle the jumping animations.
Anyway, it was just a thought, and this probably belongs in another forum, so feel free to move at will :)

Two thoughts against this, one in game, one out of game.
First, from prime fiction we are told the gates use the folded space and wormhole theories of FTL. So you don't so much travel from one gate to the next in a line as instantly blip from one point to the other as your ship is moved behind the curtains of reality.
Second and of lesser importance, the servers have no concept of between starsystems. As far as they're concerned you're in one place, then they update your position and you're in another.
But yes, it's entirely possible it'd look very impressive. And give you a proper appreciation for the distance some of those big long region jumps cover. As well as give you something pretty to watch whilst your computer lags on the jump.

Once upon a time, there was a docking animation.
A jumping animation is well possible, I think, but it better be optional. Client lag when jumping is enough as it is. ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."
