Hi there,
to use smartbombs you need the skill Energy Pulse Weaps, which description says:

Skill at using smartbombs. 5% decrease in smartbomb
What does this mean? I would think a decrease in whatever would be bad, exept for recharging, but I would not put that under decrease...

SmartBombs seem pretty useless from what I have seen.

Using smart bombs in empire is just like writing a suicide note.
Smartbombs can be extremely useful, but only in certain situations.
A niche weapon.

I enterd Angel Extravaganza mission. A smartbomb would have been very usefull there, frigs all around me, less then 3000 meters... And since I was flying a Domi, plenty of high-slots free. And yes, I'll see to it, that my drones are not within pulseradius...

I've been toying with the idea of using smartbombs like "iron bombs" like those dropped in WW2.
Make a high-speed, close pass at the target, hit the bomb.
Just like the old fashioned bombs, there's an explosion radius. Unfortunately, I have yet to figure out exactly where the center of the explosion is: when I activated the smartbomb, or some time after.
I tried with some corporate mates, making 1km/s high speed passes and could not consistently get hits. It seems like there is some delay after I activate it before the bomb actually goes off, and the point it goes off, graphically appears behind me (where I activated it), but no damage occurs around that area.
The smartbombs are like the Defender missiles: interesting ideas with disappointing implementations.

From what i understand smartbombs are very usefull in two situations: One, they make good dronekillers. Two, usefull for swarms of frigs that get too close. I once saw a screanshot of a guy who took out a swarm of 60 (yes, sixty) frigs with a 8 smartbomb equiped battleship. But overall, I think they are still specialty items.

Smartbombs can be useful in certain situations. But it's dependant on a lot of stuff. Niche weapon, as someone said.
