Hi all,
I just lost a destroyer yesterday. I had about 8 to 10 serpentis guys following me and the missles tear me up. I have about 500k of skill points and I do well against the normal mobs but once I get a few missle carrying guys on me I am toast. The fight always seems to go like this... I target the three closest, try to orbit at 20km. Once they get closer than 20km to me my ship turns and runs to increase the distance and I fly away with about 8 in tow just ripping me a new one. Last night I tried to target the missle carriers and fight it out but I lost.
I am thinking of using a cruiser (MOA) to fight them but the crusier is very slow and I'll have them all on me in a matter of minutes. What do you recommend when fighting 8 or more mobs when some use missles?

Okay first, they're not mobs. This isn't WOW, this is EVE. They are called RATS. :)
Second, if you want to fight missiles off in a small ship, you need to have skills to back up the VERY FEW MODS you can fit in a destroyer.
Moving to a cruiser is a good idea, because it will give you the flexibilty of some bigger guns and missiles (missiles = win against frigates) and you will likely be able to take quite a bit more damage.

Yes they are called rats.
Your 1st objective, is to detemine which are fring the missles on you, focus fire on attacking them.
You should also get an armour or shield repair/booster, this will greatly increase how much longer you last.
In this game we got resistance to 4 different types of damage, EM, Kinetic, Expolsive and Thermal. Get a hardern for the damage they deal, it will go a long way to making you live much longer. -----------

Yep, think that a cruiser will help you a lot more than that distroyer. Just get the skill at least to 3 and some skills for the module you intend to put on it, all around 2 days of training I think. Or you could find somebody to help you out. That would be a solution, as not everything is good to be done alone, sometimes it is more fun with company.

I used to have the same problem with missile boats:
1) Fit appropriate resists (Therm and Kinetic for serpentis)
2) Range is good... since you can't work transvertial velocity against missiles, try and stay out of their range using longer range ammo and/or drones and an afterburner.
Destroyers are kinda known for their paper armour... the cruiser would almost certainly be better.

I would recommend you get a Caracal instead of the Moa.. you will find that the 5 launchers tend to kill things alot faster. Also with all the medium slots, you can use shield hardeners and a shield booster to make sure you can tank their damage.
Also its cheaper than the Moa. :)

Actually even a frigate will be better than a destroyer vs missiles.
The 4 different destroyers have signature radii of 75m, 83m, 85m, and 90m
Opposed to frigates who are all in the 30's or so.
This is significant because a destroyer really can't mount any better tank than a frigate can. Fast + small sig = less damage taken from missiles.
So if you're not trained up for your cruiser yet, hop in a frig if you know a mission or belt has rats lobbing missiles about. You may take less damage.I tend to do pretty well vs mission and belt rats w/ my armor tanked Rifter.
(and sidenote - "mob" has been used as a term for NPC's since at least 10 years before the existence of the MMO-who-shall-not-be-named!) ------------------------------------------------ This sig is mine. There are others like it, but this one is mine alone. Mods keep out, or I will drop trou and sprinkle some tinkle in your Cheerios! -I don't eat Cheerios. -ReverendM |

Seconded on the Caracal approach. However I tend to use shield extenders at the moment (2 lg & 1 med) giving over 5000pts on my shield. This also ups the regen rate of your shield & with 2 power diag sys it seems to work well against frigs!

I tried the frigate approach but I cant seem to damage the RATS fast enough in a frigate. Once I get 8 on me my only option is warp away.
The missle carrier is an interesting idea... My first thought is how effective is it at closer ranges? The RATS seem very fast and like to close in to less than 5000m away. Will missles still be effective?

What kind of weapons are you using on the frig?
Might be having problems tracking them.
My rifter chews through them quite fast, but autocannons track rather nicely.
If you use rails and/or missiles - maybe mount light missiles or rockets (rockets are great at chewing up frigate rats inside 5km or so) ------------------------------------------------ This sig is mine. Rats (drop the capitals- you're learning ) mostly seem to fight at close range, (in the majority extremely close range), so feel free to splurge on high damage weaponry with sucky range. If you're using Hybrids, consider using Antimatter ammo, and take a look at Blasters, instead of Rail Guns. Light Missiles should do the trick if you're using launchers; try to match up the damage type to your enemy- Serpentis are weak against kinetic iirc, so try using Bloodclaw missiles against them.

I was disappointed when I first got into a destroyer. I liked the bigger cargo bay, but it did not work too well for ratting. Cruisers IMHO are a big step up from destroyers.

Another question... The Caracal says it has 5 hardpoints but it also says it will fit 5 missles/2 turrets. This means I have the choice but can not go over 5 total weapons correct?

That's right.
You get 5 total weapon slots. You can use up to two turrets, up to five missiles - any combination under those limitations that add up to 5. (or less if you want to keep a high slot open for a NOS or other non-weapon module).
And like the guy a few posts above said - try blasters instead of rails if you're engaging fast frigs at close range. Might have a better time hitting/doing faster damage. ------------------------------------------------ This sig is mine. There are others like it, but this one is mine alone. Yes, they still are. Use the assault launchers (light missiles) against frigates, not the heavy launchers. I'm finding though that not many get chance to get that close though . Also remember faction specific ammo helps a lot. Have a look at my bio or a lot of other users bios for the appropriate types.

In all fairness, a mob is defined as: -An organized gang of criminals; a crime syndicate
So a group of pirates working together to shoot you can correctly be called 'a mob'. Rats on the other hand are -in the english language that is- rodents, or possibly slang for a snitch or traitor.
'Mob' is in no way patented by WoW, and is in reality the correct word for this occasion.
So if he says 'mob' he is correct, and your 'this is not WoW' remark is hence just stupid. If you feel like being condescending to someone who asks a question, please get it right.
And get a Moa, it's da sweetness

in case you didn't know, there is a stat called tracking speed which will give you an idea of how fast a turret or blaster can rotate and follow an enemy. The higher the number the better. They are measured in radians/second which 1R = 57.29¦

Edited by: RichoDemus on 03/10/2006 11:12:20 This is what I used for my L2 missions and it worked like a charm: Caldari Cruiser Caracal High slots: 5 Assault Missile Launchers Mid: 1 10mn Afterburner 1 Medium Shield Booster the rest Medium Shield Extenders Low: 2 Ballistic Control System
I think that fits (it's been awhle since I used it) for some missions (can't remember the the name, your up against minmatar stabbers) you should change the assault launchers for heavy missile launchers, you should also train missile projection and missile bombardement (the +missile speed and the +missile velocity skills) because light missiles don't travel that far and you'll be quite slow and you don't want to get outranged by any npcs
and since you're new I think you should check out the link in my signature, "Eve University" is the perfect corporation for newcomes, I've learned lots here hope this helps and welcome to EVE!

Just a small correction to clarify:
A "mob" used in gaming terms is a "MOBile". An NPC which is not fixed and may move about in the game. The term derives from the very early days of network gaming (anybody remember Hack on a VAX?) - the "mobs were actually ASCII characters on a very small screen..
It has since become a generic term for any NPC in any computer game.
Anyway, rats are mobs...

Since you said you were thinking about the Moa, I am assuming that you are Caldari. I find the Caldari Destroyer is great for level 1 missions, but you won't do well with level 2 agent missions. I decided to get a Moa to do the level 2 missions and they are quite easy. Very rarely I will need to warp out and repair armor and regen shield...but the Moa makes those a cake walk. Fighting small ships, you can just use 3 light scout drones and missiles. For bigger ships the medium rail turrets are great. Just keep working on all the skills useful to piloting and you will be fine (better shield, better powergrid, better speed, better agility, etc.)

Missiles dont miss fast moving ships like turrets can which means a full rack of assault launchers on a Caracal is extremely effective against NPC frigates. Also you can cause alot of damage to them with very litle skill points.

Edited by: Ardan on 03/10/2006 17:22:51 Edited by: Ardan on 03/10/2006 17:20:37 I do lvl 2 missions in an AC Ruppie. I never warp out and I have not had to turn on my Repairer, even on human cattle lvl 5. Cruisers are almost overkill for lvl 2 missions. I have a Cyclone I am setting up for lvl 3 missions. Hope that will be more challengening.
But anyway. Put 2 large shield extenders and 2 pdus and they should not break the tank. Since you are caldari, put a sb on it aswell, since you should not try to armor tank it.
Yes I second the vote for the Caracal. It will shredd frigs with assault launchers, or standard launcers for a higher rate of fire. (Yes I know over time assault launchers have the higher rate of fire due to ammo space and reloading. But in lvl 2 missions, 5 light missiles, especialy with the caldari bonus, should insta pop frigs.)

newer faces are getting updated before older faces it seems. Almost like there is a dead zone that if you signed up then, you are forever doomed to be a !.
This is the deal with dessies, they suck unless you have an insane amount ( for such a low ship class ) of sp in engineering and gunnery. I can clear a level 2 mission faster ina dessy than a cruiser. Of course I have it outfitted with all tech II gear.
Caracal is best for level II's. use assault launchers for all missions except that one that has those damn stabber cruisers, you will need heavies to reach them.
A moa can do level mission with good tactics and setups true, but at low sp the caracal is just easier. This is comming froma caldari spec pilot with 3.9 mil in gunnery, and 200k in missles. Moa is better for belt ratting though, and caracal often doesn't last long enough nor do enough dps to be as effective in pvp as the moa.
In short, get your missle support skills to 3, heavy and light missles to 4, then train hybrid skills. eventualy, you will find the need to shoot another player, and guns > missles tbh at high sp levels.
