Some dude recently threatened me with trade war if I didn't remove a buy order he didn't like. He claimed that he had been trading for six years and owned the region in which my 2-jump order had been placed. He was very abusive, and seemed to think that he was the only "real trader" around.
I searched my database, which contains a quarter of a million trades dating back to 2005, and found that he had done a total of 22 trades with my corporation, all this year and mostly in July. Each trade was for small amounts of salvage with a total value of 175m. In that same time period that I have traded 500bn with other clients.
What's the best way to trash the market in his region for the items he trades, in such way that hurts him and benefits what will be his former clients? For example, should I put up a massive buy order above the Jita bid price and dump large quantities of stock purchased from Jita onto his regional market at below the Jita ask price?
If I set a one-pip spread between my buy and sell orders will this be the most effective way of keeping him out of the market for as long as my stock lasts?

Seriously, just keep doing what you're doing. If one buy order is enough to get his knickers in a twist then it's obvious you don't need to do much do disrupt him or raise his blood pressure.
Ignore and carry on. Going into things with the aim of destroying someone else tends to make one forget the importance of just making profit, so just carry on, make profitsis and if that pisses him off enough to start making silly mistakes then that's his problem. The moment you let emotion into these things the bottom line is put at risk - he's already fallen for that trap, I'd advise against you doing the same.
That was the sensible answer. The waargh rage answer would likely involve many ganks. If he's getting grumpy at region orders then presumably he has to pick all that junk up at some point - either with courier contracts or doing it himself. Find out which launch the shark & laser combo at him. |

Agreed. It's a little tricky and time consuming to track someone elses actions on a market, so finding out where you can really hurt him might be unreliable and take time away from your own ventures. If you're looking to upset him, I'd say just increase the orders that bothered him in the first place, and all power to you. |

Those being around longer don't have and can't claim any special rights as their owns, just for having been around longer.
If someone threatens you because you start picking into his markets and locations, it's up to him to do something against you. In no way I would package my things and leave, just because he thinks he has older rights. @Tom: This has nothing to do with respect, this is business as usual.
And if he wants market war... well, if you are a professional trader then you will know what you will have to do ;)
May the better one win lol They told me to mine... and I started to mine, the market ;) |

This. Esp. the second paragraph.
Or....
Ignore his ragemail (and any other attempted communication), and just keep outbidding his buy orders and undercutting his sell orders, as often as possible, even if only by 0.01 ISK. Put him on your watchlist, so you'll know when he logs on and off. Try to time your order changes to (a) within 5 minutes of his last change, and/or (b) right after he logs off. Making him think you are a market bot will annoy him more than anything else you can possibly imagine. :) |

Don't even bother, he might begin to feel mildly important if you take the time to mess with him. Far more insulting to do nothing at all. Plus (and most importantly) it doesn't cost time and ISK. |

I like this idea. Escalate the trade war into, I dunno, trade armageddon. It'll probably blow over in a few weeks and he'll either give up or put more entertainment in your mailbox.

Higher a merc group to take him out every time he leaves station. Try to figure out what he is buying and selling and squash him. even if you lose isk its worth it to get rid of and have fun with him.
Buy a ton of that item in a different region and bring it in and flood the market, then put in a higher regional buy order than his and close the gap, sure you make less profits but hes not selling or buying any of that product anymore. OR you could buy all the stock that is not his, list it at a loss till he moves out.
Just have fun with him, no use in letting worthless rage go unpunished.
You should shame him as well by posting the messages and contact in the forums, other people will have fun with him for free just because whinny pithy people deserve to be shamed and humiliated.
Just have fun and keep us updated on how he responds.

The "observation on the database" was a mis-observation made by somebody clearly unaware that the EVE API can be downloaded by a cron job and converted into SQL with Perl scripts. I have just short of 250,000 trades stored, updated every two hours, and I've written a fair few Java and spreadsheet front-ends for analysis.

Someone in Motsu thougth he could buy out my orders to do a nice speculation. He forgot Jita was only 6 jumps out. After a while I got a mail asking to stop dumping stuff. I told him he had not even consumed 25% of my stock ;) and if he would like me to contract the rest to him at the same price... he ended up contracting me all stuff back, which give me a nice profit. ;) |

Just keep doing whatever you are doing. It is obviously working.
Sacrificing your own profit to try to 'harm' another player really won't work against someone who knows what they are doing. (Although the fact he bothered to complain to you in the first place shows this may not be the case)
Getting into and out of markets is trivially easy. Our goods don't spoil, so barring long term price adjustments, people can just wait out whatever short term price manipulations you introduce, so even if you catch him with a load of stock on his hands it's hard to really harm someone who just sits in a station and trades all day (esp if they contract out the actual hauling).
I see people trying to tank the profit margin all the time. I simply wait & trade other modules until they think I am gone , and restore their sell/buy orders to normal levels, then jump back in.
If you really want to hurt someone you should get them to invest in your IPO then scam them. |
