I would like to see a feature for the use of left-over Marines from the missions. As an alternative to blowing up enemy ships or stations, have the marines attempt to board and capture the ship/station. The ability to use Marines would be based on a new leadership skill.
To get close enough to the target ship, you would need a Ship Grappler (similar to the Tractor Beam, but only works on capturable entities) Once close enough the Marines would cross to the other ship. Of course, if the other ship also has a compliment of marines they could repel boarders.
The Grappler could also have the effect of drawing your ship faster to the target if the target is heavier than the ship, or if the target is fixed like a station.

As discussed before, there is serious problem with economic balance of capturing ships - issues with insurance in case of players and with too big income in case of ratters.

There is no weight in the space .
Other physical forces apply.

That about being able to use marines to disable abandoned towers?
Say you put 10 marines a long with a new type the technition or two in to a tower who's fuel has been completely depleted and they slowly fight and hack there way thought the tower till they get to the master control room and can override the achoring system. Possibly some trade goods, like small arms and hydrongen batties (to restore tempary power back key systems).
Have it take a significent amout of time so only truely abandoned towers (or were the owner has been forced to abandon them as they will be kill if they enter the system) and take say a week per class of tower. The deployer would get an eve mail telling them that there marines now have control. They can fly upto it an un anchore it (only option).

Maybe the marines could be used to remove assets from the structures? Capturing a structure would mean you could open it up like a cargo can, accessing its contents without blowing it up (getting a slight increase in loot quality), or perhaps something entirely different from the stuff you'd get when blowing up the same structure?

I have made several threads for teh use of ground troops over the years, as have many other players desperate to stave off the decent into boredom after 4 years of playing Eve.
However the Eve combat system is not set up to handle BC3000AD style management of ships, fighters, troops and subsystems which is a shame but there it is.

board the ship?
if the concept is that the pilot is in a sealed capsule, we can assume that there are no hatches doors or windows anywhere on the ship and that the capsule is burried in the deepest darkest pits of hell.
so how exactly do you steal the ship with footmen? who are not in capsules, and cannot integrate to the ship in any way?

There are of course hatches and docking bays as the normal crew needs to be able to leave and board the ship in the station. It is only you in the capsule, the crew not.
However using Marines to board enemz ships and capture them is too unbalanced and would ruin the fun of the game. It wouldnt be much PvP anymore but rather "Steal yoir opponents ship" or "Who can fit more Cargo expanders to take more marines on board"
