Hi folks,
This is my first post so please be gentle!!!
Having read these forums extensively I decided to go and have a look at this famed place called 0.0. I kitted out a Merlin (it's the best I can fly) and made the 10 jumps or so from Jita to 0.0 space.
I got to 0.0 and was warmly greeted by a group of players in fancy ships like crows and stuff who were delighted to see me. Even with their loving attention I managed to warp to a couple of belts for a look and saw Dread Gurista Ravens there with bounties of 1.25 mill a piece.
After going round a few belts looking for a lone gurista frigate I could have a go at again I was amazed at the number of Battleship spawns.
Then the dear gate people found me and it was a quick exit back to the clone vat. They were very nice about it even after I explained I was only going there for a look. Fairly insitent though that I took the clone vat route back home!
Anyway, here are my questions.
1. How come players will leave all these rats that pay huge amounts in systems and just sit at gates podding people as they come in? No one made any attempt to get the rats; they seemed only concerned with denying them from others.
2. Any ideas why CCP are happy to allow a small group of players to deny 0.0 to the majority but not have any interest in it themselves?
3. Do the players who sit at gates play other characters that actually do something because it seems very boring?
After my first attempt I tried again down in Providence and met some really nice people in the system. One of them even gave me some hints and money for my trouble.
No doubt tonight I shall try again in my trusty merlin and see how far we can get. I got 5 mill from the player in providence so that should give me a few more tries.
I know 0.0 is brutal but I also know it's part of the Eveverse and want to go explore it. This post is to try and get some understanding of what motivates these folks so I can get a bit further in.
Might even see a rat worth more than 1.25 mill. (from which I will run away because I cant kill it.
Thanks.
Ming the mercful
Ps. As I epxlore more I may have other questions.

1) Because they don't need the money, they are pvp'ing, probably to protect "their" space, or possibly to pirate, or to conduct war operations of some kind. Most 0.0 entities operate a "not blue shoot it" policy. You might be a friendly chap going for a look. You might be a spy. There is little upside in seeing if you are the former. Lastly, they might just like killmails.
2) You are jumping to conclusions based on limited evidence. See the answer to 1) above.
3) Possibly. Nothing to prevent it.

Rats with over a million ISK bounty are not uncommon. They also respawn before too long. A PvP setup usually isn't all that effective at PvE, it's just not efficient. Most people will PvE in safe space close to their alliance home system in a ship specifically fitted for the job.
Also, they were not protecting the rats, they were most likely protecting all the space beyond the gate you jumped in to. The entrances to 0.0 are few and far between, if you defend one of the choke point entrances then it makes it a lot easier to defend the space beyond.
Yes, gate camping is very boring. But slightly less so than chasing people around your home systems. Some buggers are almost impossible to catch once inside.

Welcome, and I will be nice.
1. 0.0 space is claimed space, which means players control them. Often they do this to prevent players from travelling to and from Empire, since it remains the popular method of entering their region of space. Their objective is to keep spys and problem seekers out, to you they do not know if you are hostile or not, so they rather kill you.
2. CCP allows you to do anything within the rules and that is what maeks Eve, Eve. The freedom provided to choose what you want to do.
3. Some of us have multiple accounts, I hear 2 is common, while the highest I think is 5, for a non macro minner.
0.0 is the place to be to make money, but there are a lot of risks invole. To the solo player, there is no support out there, NPC station tend to be rarer and there is no-one taking care of you (concord). Few ships are out there and even fewer supplies can be bought.
0.0 remains under develop by empire standards.

They have plenty of time to hunt them and after a while hunting that type of rat gets very borrring so they switch to territory guarding (gate camping / patrols). They were not denying them from others, they were maing sure a potential spy did not get through and/or their kill board record got another plus.

It is really in the players hands to change that. CCP allow us the freedom to try and shape the game. (or so I hear )

It is VERY borring whne the traffic is low. With high traffic come also a lot of neutrals or enemies and it stops being borring. Many have alt characters but I thik a player in 0.0 does not need an alt in 0.0 also to make isk.

Most of the time, These are your players who have no life, and are able to sit at the computer 23/7 to gate camp. Those of us who troll the forums all the time, on the other hand, also have no life, but have jobs that require us to make an appearance, and are unable to play all the time.
A Lot of it I know is Bragging rights, If you look at things such as killboards and such, they try to get the most kills, ETC. (For example, it looks really cool to have 1000kills in your name, Espically as many killboards don't break it down into size.) Most of your Gatecamps in 0.0 are No-Win situations, Where you go in, and they have it set up so that there is no possible way for you to get through. I've been seeing a lot of that lately TBH.

CCP doesn't allow, or for that matter stop, anyone from doing anything they want, as long as its within the game mechanics. Unless they are Hacking the code or something to camp the gates, it's not CCP's job to take care of it. CCP wants the players to do that, and its up to them to Fight off the Pirates camping the gates.

3. Do the players who sit at gates play other characters that actually do something because it seems very boring?
It Is.
----
A few tips for you, 0.0 is often times hard to get into, but once your through the blockades that do exist (90% of them don't last 23/7 btw) and a few jumps into it, 0.0 is actually fairly safe. A mistake you seem to have made was to explore the belts in the same system as the gate campers, Most likely, they would not have followed you into another system.
Also, don't underestimate your Merlin, I've heard stories of people taking down BSs all the time in a frigate. Your only dissadvantage will be the missiles, as they will do damage often, but if your in Providence, for example, there are BSs that use only lasers, and those are easily outmauvered. Of course, the escort ships are another situation.
0.0 is great, its not all its built up to be, And you may be a tad dissapointed, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else :)

the other point to note is that hostile frigs can and do take down friendly npc'ers, it is therefore in an Alliances best interest if people take turns guarding/npc'ing.
Also, 0.0 does have an actual sec status between 0 and -1; -1 systems are where you are most likely to get Officer spawns with bounties up to 8-10mil for a BS, any decent npc'er will be in these systems, far away from the empire choke points, which will typically be very close to 0.

Edited by: Big Z213 on 03/10/2006 15:11:34 Edited by: Big Z213 on 03/10/2006 15:10:25 I live in 0.0 and there are answers to all your questions. Those rats are worth a lot, but remember that 0.0 is much larger than empire is (i think) and there are plenty of rats. But no-one will hunt in a camped sys at they will be hunted down and duly ganked.
My alliance will camp gates to control the amount of hostiles entering our territory or just to kill people in general in the hope of getting some good loot. These players are not denying access to these areas of space. Friendlies are allowed through and they will not camp the gate constantly. This is not an exploit of any kind, it's just the way it is because you'll never kill anyone if you couldn't camp gates. What is good is when another fleet arrive to displace the camp, now that's when it gets funky. The whole of 0.0 isn't like that though and you'll find the gates between emp and 0.0 are the ones that get camped the most.
Gatecamps can be boring but they can be really fun, it just depends. In 0.0, the only thing that counts is your standing towards alliances and corps, and if you're neutral or hostile, you should expect to get wasted.
0.0 is dog eat dog, it's pretty ruthless but the rewards are worthwhile. The rats are plentiful in 0.0 and range from frigs to BS and faction BS. Bounties are high but people will not hunt in busy systems. My alliance have a dead-end system deep in 0.0 where we kill rats etc, because it's a hell of a lot safer than venturing to potentially busy/hostile systems.
Hope this helps and I hope you get established in 0.0 one day.

1. Because making isk in 0.0 is easy enough. It's just not fun after a certain while. People get bored, and the most unimaginative of them end up camping that gate.
2. They dop have interest in it themselves. Not always an interest in the shape of putting their own characters to work there, but always an interest in have the power to deny it to others. That power alone is worth isk you know. If you earn only half of what you could, but in doing so make sure your enemy only earns a third of what he could, you are after all gaining an advantage...
Of course, alot of people simply dont have the stomach for mining all the time. It's more often then not about pride and boredom up in that corner of the galaxy where you were. and yes, CCP are happy to let em do that, because they are doing nothing you cannot stop them from doing. Cut-throat universe, remember ?
3. It is very boring, and why they manage to do it I don't know either. Those very few times I've been required to camp a gate in the last three years (very very very few times indeed), I've always done so with one account doing something else in the background, or while actively whoring these forums to break the monotomy

In game Connect 4 has been awesome for gate camps~!
For some reason the fact that ~50% of the people replying to the thread fail to read and understand the point of the OP is hilarious. |

Advice. if u want to explore, search for a sytem called EOA, go into 0.0 there, is hardly camped anymore (on account of geminate being pretty ****e). so yeah thats it. jumping into ECP is virtual suicide.
Oh yeah if you reaaaalllllly realllllyy want to take a look i suggest you contract a guide with instas.

I wasnÆt at that particular gate camp last night butà
See, I really wanted to go kill some belt rats. IÆm flat broke. The reason IÆm flat broke is that some people invaded out space this weekend and destroyed a couple of my ships.
Then I hear that one of the groups that vaporized my lovely battleship were massing in force again. Well, I had to help protect the area. So I went down and gate camped with some others for a bit until I had to log for the night.
In 0.0 itÆs up to the players to enforce the law and protect the people who are out carebearing. That means that everyone is expected to go help out at the gate camps every so often. IÆm hoping I can rat hunt for the rest of the week to build up my wallet again.
You seem to be a good sport and have a good sense of humor. IÆm sure that you can find some 0.0 corporation to take you in if you ask around. Of course, youÆll have to help with defense and such. (You would probably make a great scout in that frigate.) So you will be one of the guys at the gate camp answering questions about why you do it.

Salutations,
You may tell from my cheery manner tha I made it. Entering an undisclosed locale I have yet to emerge into deep 0.0 but for the moment I have logged to go do some work. Hopefully my ship will still be there when I get back!
What's fast becoming a eality is I will need to create my own Corporation since starter corps seem universally revilled.
Current favourite name is 'Shackelton's Runners'
He is one of my favourite explorers after all.
However all names if you suggest them will be considered. By the way, how do you create a corporation and how much does it cost?
Also are there no stations down here? Where is a pod pilot to well... erm.. go?
Ming.

camping bubbles are fun *stares at the strobing* shooting neutral/hostiles is fun, moreso when they don't have 4 or 5 stabs on a vagabond(you know who you are!)

Or maybe while you're at work, some people are just about ready to wrap up their gaming and go to bed for the night? This a worldwide game, and while I can't speak for all alliances, I know that mine has players from Europe, North America and Australia. Between all these groups of people, there will be steady coverage of a system if it is required, and an invidivdual pilot need only contribute a few hours of his time after work. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

After exploring for a while in 0.0 and meeting numerous rats of an Angelic disposition I once again encountered the locals.
This time though they were very talkative and we had a good discussion about the local politics. It again became clear starter corps were a no go for getting turned blue so I again took the clone vat route back home and proceeded to set up my brand spanking new corporation!!!

everyone plays the way they want. You want to Rat, they want to camp. EVE is a big sandbox, everyone can try to do what they want. If you dont like what they are doing, get a bunch of friends together and break up their camp. Make friends with their enemies, etc. Its not as hard as it sounds, Even in just tech1 frigs.
