*sniff* I've just had to cancel my eve subscription, much to my annoyance, as my university has blocked all of the ports and so I'm a bit stuffed.
Now, this will only be temporary, as I can only live on campus for a year, and then I will be back to unrestricted internet access.
Until then though, can I have any assurance that my character will remain in existence, and not get deleted? I'd be pretty peeved if I lost everything that I worked so hard for. Is there anyway to guarantee that it will be kept alive?

That sucks. I think you should paint EVE-ONLINE FTW on the school somewhere, like, have it take up a good portion of one side of the building.
That'll show them

You can actually get around that. If you have any friends with webservers, ask them if they can give you a shell login or buy a virtual server with shell access. ( 1und1.com offers them from 10€ up in germany, but you'll prolly want one in the usa. ) Also check what your schools offers. We got shell accounts to a few servers in our school so we could train with bash for for the "Operating Systems" unit.
If you have one, download this program to connect to it: Putty Once you have it, copy it to your windows directory. Then click Start->Run, then enter this:
putty -D 26000 -l username -pw pasword ip or hostname of your shell server
Once it's connected, just leave it open and running minimized.
Next download SocksCap and install it. When starting, accept the license(wait for the buttons to activate), then click yes. Check that it's set to localhost on port 26000, then click OK. Click New, etner eve as profile name, select the eve executable, then the eve directory, last click OK.
Now recheck that putty is still connected, by entering the command "ls -la".
Now select the eve profile in SocksCap and click run. If everything went right it will now be able to play just as before.
Warnings: - depending on the location of the server and its line to you there might be lag, as the traffic is routed from your computer to the shell server and then to the eve servers - make sure to lower the priority of the eve process in the task manager or it might override putty or sockscap and thus create artificial lag

Edited by: IDesert FoxI on 04/10/2006 16:14:12 Sounds very good, but I have some concerns before I start tinkering. If I get sussed out by the university, will I be in the red? I'm guessing theyve done what theyve done for security reasons, and so if I let a virus or something in, they might revoke my internet or something. Is this a legitimate walk around, not needing to worry about getting caught, or is there a risk of getting caught doing a bad thing?
Thank you ever so much for the replies guys, you can never doubt the EVE communit, and so I really don't want to leave!
EDIT: Oh, and you might realise that I have the computer knowledge of a week old carrot (ok, might be putting myself down a bit, but bear with my computer illiteracy :S)

i highly doubt that there's any risk. the it departments of schools usually do that kind of stuff to prevent their megabit lines being abused for filesharing. online gaming is only so much as collateral.
viruses: in fact the chance that you get one by normal use of the internet is infinitely higher than any other port, so if they wanted to protect you against virii they'd simply revoke web access to everyone. ;)
aside from that: without actually examining your traffic and finding out exactly what it is, they won't have a clue what you're doing if the shell is outside the university. to them it simply looks like you're doing something on a shell that generates traffic all the time, albeit a very low one. doubtful they'd bother to follow that.
i do suggest listening around and reading a bit to find out if there is any public announcement for why they did it.

CCP guarantees an account will not be deleted for a period of 6 months, however we have yet to delete an account in an effort to save database space. If this becomes necessary (highly doubtful in the foreseeable future), there will be a number of announcements made a long time in advance.
Suffice it to say your account and characters are safe. Just don't delete anything yourself.

Agreed.
You should also get and read a copy of your IT policy for your school. And the possible punishments. ___________________________________________ The deeper you stick it in your vein, the deeper the thoughts there's no more pain. ___________________________________________

Go visit your ResNet HQ at your University, and kindly ask, What the ****?
Blocking all your ports (if this is in the dorms), will not be something alot of people take kindly to.

Schools blocking incoming ports is for security.
Schools blocking outgoing ports is for P2P. Must be sick of bittorrent eating 95% of all the bandwidth on their connection.

I'm aware of that. It doesn't change the fact that the policy for computer use on campus probably says "any violation of this policy is grounds for explusion/exclusion from the campus network".

In much the same way that schools usually have strict alcohol policies, thats a clause which is only applied if you start blatently and gratuitously abusing the system.
For a minor infraction like tunneling out to play a MMOG, its almost always better to just do it and plead ignorance in the remote chance that you're caught.

It basically says any form of hacking will get internet use restricted. not sure where they draw the line at hacking.

Running a SSH or SOCKS tunnel past your firewall is NOT hacking (unless youre running it to a server that doesnt know its a server, I guess).
Youre in the clear, buy yourself a shell and go nuts.

Never quit EVE. There are way to connect through firewalls. If you have any kind of web access you can setup HTTP tunnel to machine outside campus and connect through it. It will look like a regular HTTP connection to ordinary web server.
It's not hacking and I doubt you will brake any campus rules (unless you agreed not to use any protocol but HTTP).

That is rediculous they blocked all the ports and you live on campus, it's not like your whoring torrents out of your dorm. That is just rediculous, I would complain.

I know, its stupid! I'm going to email the IT guys (seeing as the ICT help desk, isn't an actual desk where help can be requested apparently) and see about opening the ports. Im not sure if they will budge though, as they will probably say that it will be a security hole or whatever. They definitely dont want P2P software being used, and so if P2P cant be used through EVE's port (which I have forgotten actually, can someone remind me?) I will argue that it should be opened.
Thanks again for all the replies.
