After installing the newest ATI graphics driver (Catalyst 3.8) EVE crashes on my machine very frequently. Especially after selecting a character info (this little screen that will pop up), EVE crashes. Sometimes it even takes Windows with it.
Does anybody have the same problem with the newest Catalyst driver?

Look at this thread. If you use Windoze XP you might try running EVE in Win98 compatability mode. I use the latest Catalyst drivers on Win 98 and EVE runs fine, so it may be an XP thing.
Oh, I know it's a Radeon 9800 thread, but since the drivers are the same for other Radeon cards the problem may be too...

I'm running the Catalyst 3.8 drivers in WinXP Pro with no more trouble then usual. My graphics card is a Radeon 9000 Pro, which is a DX8 card. If yours is a DX9 card, that may be where the trouble comes from.
Double-check all your ATI settings. When I upgrade drivers it resets all my tweaks to the default. One of those settings may be causing you trouble.
Lastly, when I have trouble after upgrading video drivers I usually reinstall DirectX to make sure that the driver update didn't trash any DirectX files (sounds like a voodoo-magic fix, but it works often).

Thx, I'll try to reinstall the DirectX 9.0b driver. Let's cross fingers that the Voodoo works.

Are you using an ASUS AMD motherboard? I had problems with the ASUS MB and ATI AIW 9700 Pro with other graphic intenese programs. Solved the problem by swithing to a non-ASUS Intel based MB. I have read that this is a know problem with ASUS and ATI.

Hmm, nothing seems to work. I went back to catalyst 3.7, I reinstalled EVE, I run it in Windows98 compatibility mode, I run it in fullscreen mode, in windows mode, I deinstalled virtually every other program on my computer... and still: EVE crashes frequently.
It nearly always crashes immediatly when I open a info window of a player character or its ship.
HELP.

don't use ATIs drivers... use the latest omega drivers that everyone else uses... there faster & more stable.

I got a new motherboard and now I'm having real problems getting into Eve.
Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 Motherboard 1Gb PC2100 DDR Sapphire ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 Windows 2K SP 4
I reinstalled Win2K from scratch and all the drivers from scratch. I re-installed Eve from scratch.
Currently running Omega drivers v 2.4.96b
The problem I have is is that once I have selected the character, I get to the station screen, and within 4 or 5 seconds, the cursor will lock up, and then my monitor will completely lose the video signal. The only thing I can do at that point is hit the reset button.
Any ideas anyone? Eve worked fine with my previous Epox 4SDA5+ board, I just had other problems with it.

Edited by: Dr Peace on 04/11/2003 12:41:13 Unfortunately this is a common problem - screen lockups.
AMD 3000XP Win 2K SP4 Sapphire Radeon Pro 9700 2x512Mb corsair XR3200 ABIT NF7-S Catalyst v3.8
Things to try out - Run eve in win 98 compatibilty mode - reduced the number of random ctds with "show info" (but still get them) - Upgraded my power supply to be 550W from 300W. - Forced the AGP setting to be 4x (there are problems with the catalyst drivers and 8x). Lots of threads about this on ATI hardware forums - I've been running the CPU voltage lower voltage (0.2V less) than default and system is more stable - I've even tried a deskfan blowing on the ATI Card to see if its the cooling with no net affect - set audio=0 in pref.ini - turn off motherboard onboard sound
Going to try a memtest98 for the memory to see if its that.
The new lock service with catalyst 3.8 (cannot remember whats its called) does reset the card quite often rather than having to reboot the PC, but I am sure ATI are fed up with all the crash reports I've sent them.
Frustrating that for farming I have to use my damn 1Ghz laptop running at 1024x768 as at least it doesnt crash, whereas I cannot trust my main computer that can run at 1680.
