I was just wondering what everyone thought the closest offline twin to EVE was. I'm currently on the trail, and really like the game, but am not sure about the monthly payments. Any suggestions would be helpful.

could get a job at NASA, become an astronaut.
or, cryogenically freeze yourself until such a time that EVE as we see now, becomes more like the reality will be in the future.
I lost my traing of thought half way through that last sentence - It may not make sense now.

None of these get close to EVE in terms of depth, complexity and sheer fun, but they all deal with space and starships, and so forth, plus are decent on some level.

eve is one in a million, i dont think any offline game can endeavor the diversity and complexity of this game, furthermore its only $15 a month....this is the only bill i DONT dread seeing every month

X3, most definitely.
But honestly, even though its the closest, its not comparable. I got bored after a couple weeks. And X3 costs 50 bucks for a few weeks, and EVE costs 15 bucks for a month.

Yeah but GC2 gets really, really boring. Its repetitive and uninteresting after a while.
Alpha Centauri and Space Empires IV are much better turn-based strategy games IMO.

Did you try installing the patch?
X3, from install to patched version, is almost like an entirely new game its so fixed and optimized.

Edited by: Vari on 06/10/2006 07:09:54 I'm an avid space gamer, here are the space games I found worth playing, ranked.
1. Freespace 2 2. Tyrian 3. Escape Velocity: Nova 4. Homeworld - Cataclysm
If you want the one closest to EVE from this list, it would definitely be EV:Nova. Even if the controls are very different. All games on this list I would give atleast a 9.0/10.
There's a bunch more like Freelancer, Homeworld 2, Space Rangers that I say are just okay. And Independence War 2, don't touch that.

Are you nuts?
Darkstar is utter crap. X3, unlike darkstar, requires a brain.

Allegiance is an online multiplayer game without the monthly fee. Do a google search for "free allegiance"...Microsoft gave up on it and some people took over the game. It is awesome... ---

Hmm, I tried X2, but the interface was so bad that after hours of trying I still was almost completely unable to actually play the game.
There didn't even seem to be a mouse interface at all, and everything in the whole game was keyboard basd, including buying and selling?? It seemed completely non-intuitive.

NEXUS = great space game , its not really anythign eve , but has a fantastic storyline.
it gets u really indepth with the game , the ships look fantastic it kinda has a "animie" feel to it, the controls and game play r easy to pick up and fun.
when i first played eve , i had a problem with the monthly payments , i never got a pay 2 play game before , but once i bit the bullet and continued , i have to say , its a worthwhile investment.
it becomes a hobby. not so much a mindless game. youll have alot of fun ect , what u need to do is stop thinking of it as a game u pay for , and more as that. i swim alot and it costs me arround ú20 a month. thats mroe then eve. eve online = one trip to cinima , bowling ect. infact , when u think of it , compared to any other hobby , its damn cheap ;).
so if u want a game like eve , its gonn have to be eve , so either pay for it , or buy me a steak

"Remember"?
I had to learn them from scratch. I hadn't played X before X2. Where would I "remember" the seemingly thousands of commands from, when I had never played the game before?

i never played X, and hell if i would. i heard its total crap. i played X2 and found it east to get used to, i finished the game wish gave me a month break away from eve. than i played x3, done 1-2 missions, nice graphics but they changed it too much to the point were there is no fun anymore, its all serious trade, combay gets obstracted by louzy cinematics BAH, give me back my money.

Escape Velocity is awesome... Eve resembles it so much it's kind of eerie. I used to play the hell out of EV like a decade ago, and I always wished it could be a multiplayer game. Now I find Eve and it's basically MMO Escape Velocity, in 3D, with better graphics. My name is taken from EV - the random names were hilarious, like Stud Beefpile, Dash Riprock, and of course Beef Hardslab.
