Yep NTL have been upgrading my speed free of charge. Once every few months it seems. I'm on 10mb now and I don't need that much speed.

Edited by: Grez on 06/10/2006 08:25:46 Since they merged with Blueyonder, they were forced to inherit their upgrade scheme, which means if they upgrade their UBR's ever, they have to give out free upgrades. Seems like you're getting what we've had for a good 2-3 years now, congrats! ---

this has happened to myself, and other Orange customers too (formerly wanadoo and freeserve)
basically, a 1MB connection is now considered slow for anyone like myself paying for the "max package deal" on my ISP, as of september 26th all max package subscribers on oranage (and probably, as you say youre on ntl, other ISPs as well) got upgraded to whats known as "up to 8MB". basically, your connection will go as fast as it can possibly go up to the speed of an 8MB line, and the speed is determined how close you are to your exchange, your line quality, etc etc. or, if the area you are already in is 8MB enabled, it will go 8MB speeds naturally.
i used to be on 1MB downloading at about 115k/s, now my line pulls in 2.5MBish bandwidth, downloading at about 320k/s. the speed test on www.ADSLguide.org.uk will tell you exactly how fast your line is running.
and just so you know, this post took like half an hour to type out because im using an Nintendo DS to do it. appreciate it.

The best thing, which I didn't realise until recently, is that when NTL did their last round of upgrades (June or July 1st) they removed their 30gb/month cap. Since June (and before) I have been bugging people constantly, disconecting them when needed, if they went over our limit (home network with 4 PC's).
I'm very glad that's over, it's a right pain in the arse trying to force 4 people to a 1gb/day limit when you download at 2mb/s (4mb/s since June/July).

I might of been wrong about that, but that's the general time scale :) ---
