Newb question,
Currently I have 3 miner 2's and 1 assualt missle launcher. (I also use 2 miner drones)
Would I be better off with 4 miner 2's and then just keep 4 scout drones in place of using the 2 mining drones? basically does 1 miner 2, produce more than 2 mining drones (max skill?) /end rant |

Edited by: Matalino on 05/10/2006 20:58:39 What type of ship are you trying to fit this on? Without knowing the ship there is not much we can tell you.
I am guessing you are using a Scythe or an Osprey, in which case you only have 3 turret points, so 4 lasers would not be an option anyway.
Edit - Lasers will always out mine drones, but fitting restrictions tend to be the deciding factor.

What ship are you flying? You can only put in another mining laser if you have a turret slot available (not just a high slot, but one that will take a turrent.) If you dont have one available stick with the launher and mining drones. If you do have another turret slot available then pack the mining laser in there (if you can find the cpu, which is the typical issue with miners). I know that when I mine in a barge a pack of light drones, backed by decent drone skills, will kill any rats that High Sec will throw at you.

thanks everyone, I realized that once I posted this that the osprey only has 3 turrent spots. What I have done was left 2 miner drones in the drone space, and added 1 medium drone. This is a little test to see if the medium can do more than the 2 small's. I currently have the assualt still on the highs which helps the drones out to kill the rats in case they dont get to them fast enough. /end rant |

IMO, it largely depends where you're mining, too - if you're in a region where you're going to get lightly ratted (say, a 0.7 system) then i'd go with all miner 2's and a bay full of light/medium drones, but if you're going to try mining in a 0.2 area, you might want to change them drones for Mining Drones and then just bolt at the first sign of trouble and head to antoher belt, or refit the ship.

Edited by: Marine HK4861 on 06/10/2006 05:53:47 If you're using an Osprey in high sec, your assault launcher will take care of any belt rats with ease, so you might as well load up with 4 mining drones and get the most yield for your mining work.
With level 5 in Mining Drone Operation and Drone Interfacing, a mining drone will pull in 37.5m3/cycle, but a Mining drone 2 will pull in 62.5m¦/cycle (I'm assuming you can't afford harvesters ). Unlike a miner 2 however, the cycle time is dependent on how close you park up to the asteroid.
Only 2 tips - you'll have to tank your osprey a bit (I advise passive shield as your cap will be busy running the mining lasers) and hide your mining drones in your drone bay as soon as any rats show up.
As they only have 1 hp, they tend to go pop rather easily.
