So many options with missles, do any of you vets have any suggestions to what to get and what not to get for someone that is starting out? ------------------------------------------

Cruise missiles (Paradise/Devastator combo is good) and Moljnor Torps in PvP. Remember tho that torpedoes are dumbfire. Thunderbolt Heavies if NCP in belts is your thing. It's fun to fire the missiles they drop back at them too depending on the the region of EvE you're in, any heavy missile will do there, until your gun skills take care of most of them.

Just to expand on what Lianhaun said.
Friend-or-Foe missiles and rockets can hit neutral targets like space stations, "friendly" vessels, sentry guns, stargates, etc. That will bring CONCORD immediately in your face to blow your ship to sub-atomic particles in any system with a high-enough security rating (0.4+ usually, 0.6+ always).
Heavy missiles are good. Check the missile's damage type (EM, Kinetic, Explosive, Thermal) versus your target's shield resistance. NPC pirate ships have no EM resistance on their shields, players might if they are using shield hardeners. Loading two types doesn't hurt either if you have two or more launchers available. EM missiles (and EM lasers) have a hard time penetrating armor and damaging structure even though they're best at taking down shields.
Also train Defender missiles at some point. You may not want to use them all the time, but in some situations they are VERY helpful at shooting down incoming missiles.

Wait - what's wrong with rockets? I use rockets all the time.

The problem with rockets is they don't care what they hit. So if they miss and continue on to it a sentry gun or another player, you'll get blasted (in higher-security space).
