Edited by: Rhoofles on 09/10/2006 17:01:02 I've been playing Eve for about 4 months and have mainly been hanging out in Empire Space running level 3 missions trying to get 8.0 standing and jump clone access. I've dabbled in trading and mining, and neither were a lot of fun. I haven't joined a corp yet as I wanted to find my niche in the game. However, I wanted to try pirating as a change of pace mainly to gain some PvP experience. However, I wanted to be sure how player kills will affect my security status.
It is my understanding I can't kill anyone near stargates except in 0.0 without CONCORD shooting at me. Is this accurate? What about near stations? I really haven't ventured out of Empire too often yet.
Will I take a larger security hit if I kill someone in 0.4 space than 0.3, 0.2, etc? Do I take a security hit at all in 0.0? How do I better my security status with CONCORD if I go too negative and want to re-enter 1.0 space?
If there's a guide out there someone can point me to, that'd be great. Any other info provided is much appreciated too. I don't want to lose empire access until I find a suitable corp, however i want to try out other facets of the game to see what I like in the interim.

agression = -0.5% ship kill = -2.0% pod kill = -12.0%
Any where in empire space, be aware there are 0.0 systems that fall under empire space.
Most of 0.0 space is not empire. you get no sec hit out there.

I did not know that some 0.0 systems were considered Empire. Is there a map of this somewhere?
Do the same negative ratings apply if you gain kill rights on someone (an ore theif in 0.5+ for example).

You do not take a hit if you have kill rights.

Thanks for the clarification. I did know that, but I obviously did not word it correctly. I guess my final three questions would be:
1. How do I gain standing with CONCORD in case my security status gets too low? 2. Is there a map showing what Empire Space consists of online or within the map overview options in game? 3. I've always viewed my character as a mercenary, not a pirate. I don't really intend on ransoming, I guess unless my victim offers to pay me not to kill them. I just wanted to get some pracitce using my scanner, finding people, tackling, and killing. Do a lot of PVP/PKers not ransom, and just collect modules/bounties? I guess I'm in the "I just want to blow stuff up" crowd atm.

I ransom the vast majority of my targets.
Or at least I try to.
Typically I will try to ransom anything not found at a gate. If I find something lucrative at a gate, I will just pop it, loot and get the heck out of Dodge.
If in a belt I will always try to ransom unless they are being a real tool.
Ransoming is definately the way to go, but make good on your threats. If they don't pay. Pop them.
Piracy can be a lot of fun. It's also often feast or famine. Some day are great, others are brutal. --------------

Hey Rhoofles
i will try and answer you as clearly as i can.
It is my understanding I can't kill anyone near stargates except in 0.0 without CONCORD shooting at me. Is this accurate?
If you are in 0.1-0.4 there will be 2 sentry guns at gates and stations, these will shoot at you if you aggress anyone there. They will also shoot at you for 15 mins after you aggress someone at a belt/planet.
Will I take a larger security hit if I kill someone in 0.4 space than 0.3, 0.2, etc? Do I take a security hit at all in 0.0? How do I better my security status with CONCORD if I go too negative and want to re-enter 1.0 space?
in all of empire (0.1-0.4) you will take the same security hit, and in 0.0 you will not take any security hits. But there are always an exception to the rule, so watch your security status regularly. The only way for you to regain security status is by killing NPC rats, and the bigger they are the faster it will go. So if you intent to go back to empire try and stay above -2.0. I hope this help you.

Last night I dropped a ship in 0.4 and did not take a -2 hit for the kill. I did engage first, and took the 0.5 for aggression, but no other penalty. Did not pod him.
This a bug, or innacurate information?

It must be a bug a bug. It hapen to me many times, according to Concord I should freeze in space so I don't care
To the OP check the faction the 0.0 system belongs too, if it is one of the big 4 you will take a sec hit for killing there. I think most empire 0.0 systems have a name unlike the wild XYZ-123 names of non empire systems but I might be wrong on this one.
EDIT: Kill rights are a free ship kill for those that can/would collect. no status lost when collecting your one time ticket to gank

There is a social skill to improve your security status gain--keep in mind, you will need to farm complexes for battleships and 0.0 spawns to recover a damaged security status. THINK VERY CAREFULLY ABOUT WHAT THIS MEANS.
Given the consistant penalty for ship aggression in empire versus the uncertainty of good loot, it may be more prudent to stick to 0.0 piracy. Buy a set of 0.0 bookmarks and go nuts.
If you are looking for a jump clone, grinding missions will take a very long time--there are corps that offer jump clone creation services--I believe J.P. Bueregard and a number of the ISS entities offer them. Once you create one, you can muck up your standings all you like.

It's not a bug, you dont lose the sec for ship destruction if he fights back iirc.
And it's 12.5% loss for a podding, not 12%.

It is basically any 0.0 system that has a real name rather than a code. There aren't very many around compared to true 0.0 systems.

This is because he fired back. If you gank someone without him firing back, you get the full agression and ship kill sec hit, and the guy you killed also get your kill rights for a month. It's not a bug.
