"boni" is not acceptable, for the simple reason that it does not exist in Latin. The plural of "bonus" is "bonūs", not "boni". Since it'd be fairly stupid to try to pronounce that in English, "bonuses" is the accepted usage.

Your dictionary is wrong, it is boni, latin plural of bonus.
I wonder why the word is in that american dictionary, it isn't even english. Enough of this crap. I have ignored it long enough.
Bonus is not a latin word, not the way we use it. Sure, the word bonus exists in latin - it is a second declension adjective meaning 'good'.
The word bonus as we know it is a bastardisation of that latin word. I think the bastardisation first occurred in the early stock exchanges, not sure about that. So the plural of the English word bonus is bonuses. Using the latin plural is pointless since the latin word is an adjective and means nothing in English but just for the pedants out there it is boni.
However, when using alliterated greek and latin words with their original meaning the same grammar rules apply e.g. the singular of criteria is criterion and so on. But just to reiterate, since the english word bonus has a bastardised meaning, this doesn't apply. Even if the latin word has many alternate meanings, and many do, the English word bonus is still a bastardisation.
How do I know? I'm a third-year classicist (latin and ancient greek) at Oxford University.

Yeah. It was the same with the dev blogs btw. The first couple of dev blogs had like 10-15 pages of replies, now its more like 2-5 pages. And that would happen with Tuxford threads too if it was a normal occurance that he posted sometimes.
I guess he has too much other stuff to do, and thats fine I guess. Just explaining why people go crazy with their wishlists. :)

no word on minnie carrier bonus, it is really one of the few things on this board that nearly everyone can agree with, its a worthless bonus. People on here never agree, but they agree about that.

This is the last post I will make on this thread.
I grudgingly mentioned that to add weight to my argument, doesn't mean I'm an arrogant *****, I just happen to know about the correct and incorrect usage of classical vocabulary. It's a pity people can't rely on good faith on forums where all you have to go by are people's words. It seems to have worked, because aside from you people have shut up about it. Normally I hate telling people what university I go to because I get confronted with their own inadequacies about higher education, or get insulted for 'tooting my own horn'. I guess here is no different.
PS I read sixteen books of Homer's Iliad for my mods, but for my greats papers I'm mostly studying golden latin literature of the first century BC, so no real need to mention latin dialects. I'm reading a lot of Cicero, Ovid, a whole bunch of others and amongst them...you guessed it, Tibullus! Greek's not really my thing.
PPS How the hell would you know what a third year greats student would and wouldn't do? Must....resist....urge...to.....flame....you...(further).
EDIT: Apologies for thread derailment. |

I made a mistake. Did that mistake take anything away from the point of the post? Were people unable to understand what I was getting at?
If so, I'm sorry despite your indepth knowledge of English vocabulary, you lack common sense.
Anyhow, I realise that these forums are mostly filled with useless posts and people arguing/begging/whining about things to be changed in their favor. Followed by trolls posting inane responses to the ops post. You know who you are... I'm going to withdraw this post, and you all thread hijackers can rest easy.
I will however add one point. If you dont bring something that you feel is obviously broken in the game to others notice. You get to sit and watch that broken item/feature in the game for several months... 8/10 Angel complex farming anyone?

Hehe..
You know how many dialects of Latin existed in the ancient age and how many we recognise today?
Right, there's one arbitrarily chosen dialect of Latin that's "mainstream". Even there, *i was used a lot instead of *uus in a lot of poems. *i is widely accepted in the international community as the plural suffix for Latin words that end on *us.
*uses is actually something I never saw in Latin literature.. -

I'm a bit late on the reply, but I thought I should chip in. Consider that maybe they're not going strictly for the english word 'bonus,' but the original ('a good thing,' 'a plus') from which it was loaned? You can slip words in from other languages, and people do it all the time. E.g.: i.e., RSVP, etc, habeas corpus, etc. If that's the intent, I would like to point out that, more properly, bonA should be used instead of bonI, since the neuter is more appropriate for the adjective substantive in my own opinion, but it's not a big deal, and greater classical travesties occur on a daily basis here and in the outside world (I will be happy when the population realizes kudos is a singular word, and pronounced 'ku-dohss' to rhyme with ethos, and not ku-does to rhyme with nachos).
And finally, settle.
