So I've just figured out how to properly use the scanner. I can pinpoint objects down to 5 degrees. Here's an example. I position some Asteroid Belt (eg., Planet V - Asteroid Belt 3) directly in front of my ship and draw a virtual line between the asteroid belt, my ship, and the middle of my screen. What do I see in my scan results? Nothing but the asteroid belt. Fine. Seems like things are working. If I increase the scan radius or change my virtual line, all the logical items I see in real space show up in the scanner.
Other times, however, I'll see the odd ship ... like "So and so's Caldari shuttle" sometimes more than one, in *addition* to the asteroid belt. But when I warp to the belt, there are no shuttles. I warp away, scan, and once again (at a 5 degree setting) see the shuttles in addition to the belt. There are no other celestial objects in range of my scanner save the asteroid belt. Are these "ghost shuttles?" Or what is going wrong?
Other times, I'll scan a belt and there's nothing there. I warp in and *poof* there are some rats. Perhaps that's just a respawn. But it seems to happen quite a bit.
Still other times, I'll scan a belt and see another player. I warp in and nobody is there. Maybe they've warped out .. but again it's happening more often that it should it seems.
So I guess I'm wondering about the reliability of the scanner. Like I said, I can target a celestial object (visible as an icon in space) and narrow down my scanner to have nothing else show up in the scan. It's just occasionally that I see other ships and whatnot. I'm wondering why this is happening. Do I need to fit some kind of module to make my scanner more reliable?
Thanks,
p

You are seeing stuff in safespots located between your scanning objective and your position.
With regards to belt rats, they usually spawn while you are in warp to the belt.

Really? Wow. Is there any way for me to get to one of them? ;-) Why would somebody leave a shuttle in a safe spot? I mean, I could see where you want to get into a shuttle asap ... but can't because the global aggression timer is still up for you. But then, getting into a shuttle just means you have to bounce around amongst belts and whatnot until it expires.

Could be that they left a different ship at the SS, and then used the shuttle to get to it. That's why the shuttle is there and another ship is not.
Regarding finding this stuff, buy a probe launcher and some probes, and train up your skills. You should have no problem with a stationary object like an abandoned ship. Just don;t waste the probes on a shuttle, though: You can usually buy 6-7 shuttles for the cost of one of the 3AU probes. |

Yup that's most likely. Also things u are scanning could be at moons which are sometimes in line with asteroid belts. press alt to show the moons. also u don't have to line them up with ur ship as much, just click on ur ship in space and u get a white box on ur ship. that is the 5 degree scanner box (or slightly outside it)

And what people forget about scanning is that you can adjust the scanning range as well. I really wonder why so many people bother with angles at all --- WTS: Forum Signatures, 30mil a piece. Evemail me!

I prefer using the angle because then i dont ahve to type numbers, just easier for me.

Also a lot of people fly a shuttle to a moon or safe spot, and then eject from it and fast travel by self destructing their pod to clone jump to a different location. Some systems you'll come across are full of abandoned shuttles or noobships.
