I dunno if this should be a pirate thread, but who here remembers their first time getting ganked (or attempts to be ganked) by pirates.
This includes pirates because I'm sure they became who they are because of piracy.
I had a different character then, but I remember getting my shiny new megathron and I ventured out into 0.0 space because my corp had a POS out there. I had 4 mil SP then (yes I know that was pretty stupid, but I did have lvl 1 large hybrid .) So I got ganked by some pirates. I remember being scrambled and my computer really sucked then and had a hard time making out the frames for that blue looking scramy pulsing beam. I was ransomed, but due to the video lag, I found myself in a pod afterwards. I remember being REALLY ****ed, but with the insurance (I was a smart noob) I had enough to buy a Domi...
You'd think I'd learn, but there I was again, going to 0.0 (same route) and I got ganked by the same pirates! I quit EVE there after as most new players did 6 months after being ganked.
But I came back, so far for a year and 5 times the SP... I love this game! What's your story?

First time I got killed was in Obe when I played in 2003. I had put 5 of the biggest railguns on a Thorax and lots of power upgrades in the lows... so I had basicly no tank and no damage mods. The gate into 0.0 from Obe was camped by another Thorax which appearently knew how to setup his ship better. Ship got destroyed and I got podded.

I was flying my shiny new Catalyst (I was a foolish newbie and got a Destroyer as soon as I could) back from the dealership to "pimp" it out. Excited me decided to take a shortcut back home through 0.4 space. I entered the system alright, aligned on the next jumpgate and warped. I'm busy oogling my new ship from all angles and don't notice the Amarr Battleship hovering next to the gate as I fall out of warp. Before I can say, "Cool, a real battleship!" I am hearing Aura telling me that I was a foolish noob and had just been podded. Hooray for insurance and clones.

I played an old alt on a secondary account, was going to start building him up. 2M skill points, npc corp for 10 months, flying an ibis into .3 space, didn't pay attention to local until after I was podded. Seems like the 'Die alt spy scum!' warning should have been heeded.
That was the first time I was podded.

I was in a mining apoc. 2 BoB enter space and I send all my characters to station. Both BoB were in inty's and I hadnt heard of any others in intel channel so I say what the heck, I fit for battle and undock. Now remember I am a carebear through and through so I suck at pvp. Also I was an idiot and didnt keep an eye on local cause my adrenaline was pumping. I lock on to a crow and start shooting, I have him webbed and scrambled. I think the other guy was in a claw. I was pretty confindent they wouldnt be able to dent my tank. They didnt....... but.. I failed to see the other 20 BoB jump into system.. cause of the adrenaline remember. Needless to say my kill mail was cut short because of too many ships on it. I got my pod out though /cheer. Think there was like 2 tempests, 7 taranis, 3 crows, 7 claws a jag and faction stabber on me. That is from memory. I learned the hard way and have never died that way again... too bad there are so many other ways to die.

Last night
Was mining in some .4 system through a NAP I setup with the residents of that system. When all you have is 500k skill points you have to be quite diplomatic in lowsec if you want to get things done I've learned.
Had about 3.5 cans full and went to get the hauler when I noticed a not so familiar face in local. I figured wth, zip in and zip out with 1/8 loads in my Iteron III and make it back to the station before he can say 'YARRRR'.
About the time I got the second can tractor beamed over to my hauler and ready to warp out, my shields were getting pewpewed
Appeared Mr. Pirate was in a Thorax with 125mm Carbide Railgun I's with a few drones and a scrambler. I harbor no ill will to his style of play, and headed off to go get another hauler and giant secure containers. Made it back in time to get all my ore and he left me well enough alone after that.
Tonight I take my Thorax to the same station as my hauler and miner (which has alot more than 125mm Carbide Rails on it(mining is very lucrative )) and hope Mr. Pirate shows up in local again.

I was flying back to a station while in a kessie in 0.0. I swear I hit the insta to the station, so why was I 12 km away...? Weird. There were people outside the station, so I'll warp to the planet and try again. Clicked the planet, hit warp, nothing. Huh? client lag? Start seeing yellow flashes. Try warping again. Nothing happens.
Frantically, I turn on my SB as either a harpy or merlin started shooting me, I tried to warp to a random belt, STILL nothing. Sitting there thinking wtf was going on, and at about that point I auto locked a commorant. At least that's what I thought for a few seconds before realizeing it was a flycatcher. So 4 ships were firing at me, and I didn't even think that I was in a bubble, it was odd because I swear I didn't see it...
Well, either way, kessie died, and I couldn't get my pod out in time. Pod went squish :(

I was ratting in Goinard in a Thorax. I was minding my own business when a Pirate found and scrambled me. It was before the Thorax was nerfed so I attacked him with my heavy drones and I think he was in a Prophecy.
Any how I managed to get out with my pod and he gave me some good advice on a Thorax advice. I'm still not much of a PvP'er but I can understand why a lot of people enjoy it as it certainly gets the Adrenaline pumping Jack Cromwell Azure Horizon |

I was returning from trade run in my Atron, tired and sleepy I decided to take shorter path through Vecamia. I knew Muffins are hanging around and I even knew one of them is camping the other gate, but I thought I can make it and/or he will not be interested in cheap frigate.
Well I was wrong :). He had good intuition and sniped me few moments before I jumped, got my pod too.

The first time I got killed, I was on my main character, Blacklight, and it was in the great northern war ...
Seriously, it was when m0o blockaded mara / passari. I was in my uber Merlin, and decided I needed to get back to the forge (what for, I don't remember). I jumped into whichever system it was (mara or passari) and promptly got my ass handed to me. Before i knew what had happened, my frigate and my pod vaporized and I woke up sticky with clone juice.
I was so ****ed for weeks, and promptly became anti-pirate. That continued for about a year, then I joined up with FRICK and now I am an uber griefer! yarrrrr _______________________________________________

first time beeing podded?
well .. one quiet evening in XZH suddenly a GOON rifter in local shows up (it was Cefte) beeing quite selfconfident i hunted him in my ranis - i thought: "it's a fecking rifter ... i can kill it easily" ... after warping between the planets i land 5k away from him ... i scram and web him and activate my blaster. he targets me ... his shields disappear. suddenly i loose lock - i only think "WTF?????!??" ... well i was thinking "WTF??!" for allmost one minute and forgot to warp my pod out after my ship became a blue explosion.
you should think i learned my lesson ... the day after he came again into XZH with his rifter .. i thought: "yeah .. no i engage him longrange .. either he dies to my Ares or i warp out if i'm jammed." ... warping to a planet on 30 .. he was on 15 .. i shoot him - he jams me - he warps to the 10/10 complex-gate. i'm warping after him on 30 .. and came directly on top of him out-of-warp (dooh .. complex gates suck you in) i try to mwd away - clicking like a maniac on the mwd-icon. nothing happens. afterwards i realized that you can't use MWD at the acceleration gate (thought it only would be so INSIDE the complex) ... well atleast i got my pod out.
my second and last podding happened during the XZH siege. i got order to scout one of the GOON POSes ... put my ranis on a safespot - ejected and warped to 100 at the moon. i checked another POS ... and warped back on 100 to the moon of the first one .. but from a different direction. i bounced into the forcefield - thinking: "oh .. that's bad ... warp out. warp out!? ffs - warp out!!!" ... well i was stuck in the forcefield .. maybe should have moved a bit before giving the warp order. another GOONie got my podmail ___________________

Long time ago, at about 2.5mil SP's I am ratting in a .3 in a borrowed Brutix...
I spy a neutral Enyo watching me with his Vigil friend just sitting there. I finish with the rats and was about to move on my way when the Enyo comes diving in and starts to scramble me, now my tank is dropping moderately fast as I have low-SP, and I had actually mentioned this to him. He had wondered why I had a hard time with the Sansha's rats I had been fighting.
I was of course shaking as not only was this my first PvP incident, but I was in a borrowed ship that at the time was the largest thing I had ever flown, but also something that would take me weeks to replace. With my back to the wall I activated all 7 guns on him, and watched as he had to run away in structure. As it turned out, he had no idea I would be fitting 7 x Focused Medium Pulse... poor guy never stood a chance, and to this day I now rat with a scram on as it helps me to teach the stupid pirates a lesson.
FKN Cire, I declare its time for a rematch.

My first two ganks were GM. Both in Hagilur. First week in the game, running level 1 courier missions in a Probe. Then I stopped taking missions that went through there.

We don't have anyone that 'controls' our actions, but all command use, including slash commands such as heal and spawn, are logged and reviewed. As with all the employees of CCP, I happen to like my job and do not think that a few minutes of revenge is worth being fired and having my reputation (and employment potential) tarnished.

My first time was a couple of months ago (I've only been playing for three months or so). I just got a new cruiser, an Exequror, and decided to try mining in low-sec. After a couple of days mining, with nary another soul entering the belt, apart from rats, I got complacent and found myself browsing the market window while my mining lasers made little ones out of big ones.
Then on the third night, mining in the same system, in the same belt, at around the same time of day, a frigate warps in. I check his ship out, but he doesn't seem like much of a threat. He sits there for a minute and then warps away. No biggie, I thought, and went back to perusing my next big purchase.
Suddenly I was being targeted, and my first thought was how rats had managed to sneak up on me so quickly. Three ships of various sizes quickly locked me and began firing. The first volley took down half my shields, and I had a sneaking suspicion that my warp drive wouldn't work, which it didn't. My heart was pounding, and I essentially froze like a deer in headlights. I had no clue what to do, and in short order I was floating in my pod. It took me around 15 to 20 seconds to snap out of it and warp my pod out.
Taught me numerous valuable lessons that day. Watch local. Use the scanner. Fit my ship properly, etc.

Dunno, my first pvp gank experience started from me (with my 1st main)
My corp ('Men in Black') was in SA, but I was an empire dweller running missions. But one day I spotted a CA in a shuttle right at the station in Egbinger.I thought something like: 'Cool, this guy will be my first player kill. Egbinger is 0.0. No rules !'
So I shot him out of his shuttle ... a few seconds later the station sentries 'pwned' my Rupture, because Egbinger counts as Minmatar empire space, although it's 0.0. Guess this harmless guy in a shuttle won.
Next time I had the glorious idea to make my own bookmarks from Yulai to Stain instead of asking someone from the alliance. I sat in my slasher and tried to bookmark the first gate in 0.0 in HED-GP, but unfortunately some CA frig pilots had no interest to let me succeed. So I got podded right back to Yulai.
Next gank was, when I decided to live in Curse. I put all my mission loot, tech-1 ammo bpcs and stuff into a Iteron MK III and headed to Curse without Scout or Intel. I got shot out of my Iteron already in Utopia, but I still had my POD, so I continued deeper into Curse in my pod. I think in CL-85 or Vol-Mi I insta-jumped directly with my pod into Heikki's smartbomb megathron. Me back in Empire, but I enjoyed my new freedom without implants. Needless to say that I started another run to Curse on the same day.
That was maybe 14 months ago and since then I got ganked only 2 or 3 times with one of my chars, when I didn't want to pvp. So from day 2 in 0.0 until now pvp was mostly consentual for me: I was mostly killed, when I was up for pvp and prepaired to die anyway.
It needed a few beatings until I had learned my lesson, but I think I've learned it well at least.
edit:
Remember a single time in the beginning in 0.0 I got toasted in my ratting Raven by a S******dly frig gang. Was a rather expensive loss, arbalest launchers for 45 mil isk each or so. I was a bit shocked, but immediately bought a new one and went on with ratting.
Shortly afterwards I joined interceptor gangs myself and did the same to others. When I was involved in toasting the first ratting raven that was struggling for 2 minutes or so before it died, I really felt his pain, since I still had my own helpless battle in mind.
After that it became routine and fun. We have ganked quite a lot of lonely BS with our interceptor gangs those days. Fitted orbits greater 10km, with jamming stilettos or other ceptors with dampeners or tracking disruptors on board and cutting through a the defense of a BS really fast. Guess people call it ganking.

I don't remember the exact details, but I clearly remember the stream of thoughts during the occasion:
"Hmmm, this zero-dot-zero place isn't so bad. I haven't seen a soul in the last three jumps. Hang on, there's someone in this system, is he friend or foe? Dammit, how do you check that again, ok... right click... no, not there... hey, why is he flashing red? AH! Found it, standings... AAAAAHHHHH WHAT IS THAT NOISE? MY SHIELDS! WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!
Uh, why am I in a station?
Oh."

I went to a 0.4 system hunting rats in my shiny new rifter...i found out earlier that i could easily make a few hundred K an hour hunting rats in that system...which i proceeded to use my last hours profit in fitting and buying a pretty new rifter.
Warped in, and everything was fine. I warped into one belt, saw a few rats and popped them and gathered my well earned loot. Then i warped into the second belt, began to engage the rats, and out of nowhere, i see a caracel warp in, and in no time i was locked.
Here comes the sad part. No convo or ransom or anything (which i wouldnt expect for a 250k ship anyways) and half a second and 3 missles later, i was running away with my tail between my legs to a tech school nearby, greiving the loss of my pretty new rifter. He would have obliterated my pod too, if there wasnt 20+ stations in the system and the low intertia of the pod.

Hmm, yes.. the first time sure was a bit embarrassing. Or well, rather the Brutix fitting I used those days was. Shield booster... What can I say, it was my second week of playing Basically I was in a belt in 0.3, just attacking a rat cruiser, when I think 5 blinky red cruisers came and tried to ransom me. I thought pff they'll blow me up anyway if I pay. So didn't pay, and then pod travel to station ftw
Second time was in large part my own silliness too, got angry at a griefer Enyo who liked picking on newbies apparently. Needless to say, a second-week player in a badly fitted Brutix can't do much to an Enyo pilot who has played for two years
Well, luckily my fittings and "track record" have improved quite nicely since then Many a pirate has been killed, although of course I've been killed too. Die pirates die

Tail end of 2003 (or could be early 2004). Think I had a 'rax, and was ratting alone after a long solo mining session. Some guy appeared in local, said hi and was quiet after a short, decent exchange.
After a bit, he called out again "Help, I'm in trouble". Predictably, I warp into the belt he says and of course, no npc's, just this guy. I did check his sec status - pretty high. Didn't look like a pirate...
Anyhow, a gank ensued, complete with webbing, etc. I tried to fight back, and lost. Funny thing was, this guy was so apologetic - "I'm just starting out ratting. Didn't think that SOS trick would work!".

Back in summer 2004, I flew in a shuttle without instas from Domain to Querious, to participate in a mining op. I remember having to pay a docking fee at a BA station, buying a Bestower and setting off to haul.
I got traded some local instas. Even with my first time using instas, I managed to escape a pirate in an Exequror cruiser (WCS 4tw), only to get sniped and insta-popped by a gate spawn a few jumps away, with a cargo hold full of Bistot.
I flew back to the station in my pod, and bought a second Bestower. Then I undocked straight into 3 CA interceptors (they had only been out a week, then) and saw my shield, armour and hull disappear in one smooth peel, before a lag spike and waking up in a cloning facility in Empire.
Such excitement!
Looking back, the remarkable thing is, I never felt any bad feelings about being ganked twice. That's why I'm still here nearly two and a half years later, still doing the low sec thing and passing on that experience to others.

He's not. He just writes [GM]Dave as a hobby. Well, he does get paypal donations now, I imagine he makes at least a hundred or two hundred dollars a month off it (because of the FanPack)
He's also the maker of the Goblin Smithy blog.
He's somewhat of a friend of mine, we've talked over e-mails, and I made the favicons for both blogs. Any ffxirs remember the name Feba? ^^

Edited by: gamarus on 14/10/2006 15:00:04 My first was a TunDragon Scorpion fittted with smartbombs in some lowsec gallente space. I was in a really pimped Crow (gist MWD, local nanos and t2 launchers) but not looking for any fights So I jump to the next gate, sorta spots a red flash as I decellerates and promptly hits the MWD - and see my shields melt followed by the concord message. I think wtf? why does concord fire at me? And my armor vapourises. Now the autolock has picked up the scorpion, just at my ship disappears - luckily i have enough inertia to end up outside the smartbomb range I warp around a couppel of stations before docking (having a bout of paranoia) and looking at the mail. The MWD, the nanos and 2 launchers went pop, so apart from the kill, there wasn't too much for mr. Tundragon.
I logged, and the next day i procided to my location, and picked up the BPO's and BPC's I had set out to collect... this time opting for the safe route

MY first time was in Mara when I was about 2wks old and ratting in my shiny new cormie - solo.
I got attacked by 2 pirates in merlins. Managed to damage one of them badly enough he had to warp away but his buddy scrammed and webbed me then proceeded to slowly suck my cap dry with his nos. Eventually the other guy came back and they finished me off. I think my heart rate throughout was above 200
Luckily for me they were "nice" pirates who offered to return my stuff and even sent me some ISK as compensation.

When I was one month old, I had a go at piracy in my Thorax. I ventured into 0.0, and attacked an 03 players typhoon. I thought it was a mining barge. :D -----------------------

Can't remember the first time I got podded, but the first time I was pirated was outside Stacmon... possibly in Ostingele.
Flew out a prophecy to do a mission and started getting sniped by a pest on the Stacmon gate.
Warped to station as his friends were in local...
...straight into two ravens. I just said "damn" in local as they ate my ship. Escaped with my pod back to Stacmon and headed off immediately to The Bleak Lands to become the 'hunter' instead of the 'hunted'.
Over a year on and I've never looked back. My thanks go out to Gogo Yubari and Hira'razhir for teaching me to become a pirate and to Crucifier and the others for showing me the way.

First time getting ganked by pirates... well I was in PF-346, shortly after release, when I ran into a m0o gate camp. I asked them in local if I could fraps the fight they were about to have with some other corps (who were living in Syndicate at the time) and they said sure. The fight began, I frapsed it, and right after that they podded me
The won the fight too, and I later stuck the fraps into Premiere and made my first EVE vid.

Oh wow. Probably about July 2003. Anyone remember the trade channel? Well I landed a deal for a Cu-Vapor Particle Bore (pre-miner II days) for 3.9 mil...a hell of a deal back then and a hell of a lot of money too back in the day. My seller was located in 0.0 and couldn't deliver until later that day. Me, being the roid humping person I was at the time couldn't wait. So I offered to pick it up in 0.0. Well that was my first trip to 0.0 and I think I made it 3 jumps before I saw my first battleship. Poof.

Edited by: M4sterm1nd on 15/10/2006 07:37:09 First time I got popped was by the training drone actually.... Didn't know I had to stick ammo in the ibis's gun, and panicked at the sight of red appearing on my shield bar. Tried to impulse away from it >.< D'OH! I joined my first corp, Baltic Academy (SE) mere minutes after finishing the training, and was in torrinos not half an hour after that. We headed to EC.... POP! Megathron 1, Ibis 0. "WTF just happened??" POP! Megathron 2, Pod 0. "Hey how did I get back in the station?" My first lossmail! Items destroyed : 1 implant, the ammo and the ship. Can: 1 gatling gun 1 civvy miner.
But as for pirates.... never been there. never lost so much as a miner to em, I spent the first months or so thinking pirates were rats.
