Edited by: Gretchen Dawntreader on 15/10/2006 23:13:10 In 2004, the city of Columbus, Ohio (USA) passed an ordinance banning smoking in most public areas where 2nd hand smoke could be a health risk to others who choose not to smoke. This ordinance has twice been challenged and upheld. Bar and Bowling Alley PACs protested it would cut business so much that people would lose jobs, but in fact I think one bar in all of Columbus closed, others have been moving along and bowling alleys are reportedly doing fine. You can now go to most places in Columbus and not have to smoke someone else's cigarrete with them. No more "virtual barriers" like non-smoking sections only separated by low walls or even an aisle, now there is just plain no smoking. People step outside to smoke, when they are done they go back inside. Some restaurants have actually provided quite nice patios for this purpose. Long and short of it is, if you gotta still smoke in 2006, even knowing about all the lies and deception about tobacco for decades, even after watching tobacco execs squirm in front of Congressional hearings, even after billion dollar class actions and leaks of secret memos and all the rest, if after all that you still have to slowly kill yourself with smoking related illnesses, you don't have the privilege of taking the rest of us with you.
Now on the ballot there are 2 Issues this election season.
Issue 4 is a state constitutional amendment by a group called "Smoke Less Ohio" which is backed by Big Tobacco and tobacco retailer associations. It rolls back all past smoking bans, forbids any future smoking bans, allows smoking back in almost everywhere and it is such a stretch to call it a smoking ban, buried in it someplace is something about not allowing smoking in places with less than 40% alcohol sales where minors are permitted in the premises. Something like that. But for the most part, it is not a ban. However, it is being promoted as a ban, named to sound like a ban and the language on the ballot that buries the true nature of this amendment has been carefully crafted...and it has been documented that signature takers for this initiative misled signers.
Issue 5 is a statewide law by a group called "SmokeFreeOhio," and it would extend the bans in place in Columbus and many metro areas in Ohio to the entire state for uniformity. It is a true restriction on public smoking and would eliminate the primary objection of bar and restaurant owners that patrons would simply drive to a town outside the ban (this has been shown not to have happened for the most part.)
Because there is a majority of the population in favor of a public smoking ban, the danger is that people will simply vote for both "bans" but since Issue 4 is an amendment, it trumps and invalidates 5. Both 4 and 5 are polling to probably pass, but a vote for both is a vote for 4, since that is the only one that will take effect.
Any Ohio voters out there, please vote No on 4 and Yes on 5. There are similar issues in a few other states, Big Tobacco is pouring a lot of money in these, and we cannot yield our health.
The Tobacco lobby has no shame. They've been lying to people to hook them to a deadly substance addiction for ages, and politicians take baby steps to curb that but cannot take sweeping action because both major parties are equally addicted to the kind of money these companies give to most campaigns. Rather than wait for politicians to wean themselves of this addiction, it is up to the citizens to protect themselves. I urge voters, read these initiatives, be an educated voter, do your civic duty and cast a responsible vote on election day.

Americans are vicious towards smokers in general. You dont go up to a fat person while they are eating and tell them to stop killing themselves with a death french fry.
TBH, just say 20 ft from the entrance of an establishment, and their rights aren't trampled and you don't have to smoke.

Ever heard of Non-smoking sections? BTW, it is your choice to go to a restaurant or not, if you don't like the fact that a restaurant allows smoking, stop going there. If everyone else feels the same they will feel the hurt financially.

I won't try and sugarcoat my response - if they want to do that to themselves, its their choice, but as long as they don't eat so much they collapse and fall onto you (and crush your spine in the process), it won't harm you. They might be uglier to look at, and all that, but their impact on your health is very limited if negligible.
Smoking, conversely, will impact you. Here's the train of thought: - Smokers get lung cancer and all the fun things associated with smoking by inhaling the smoke. - By inhaling air that has concentrations of said smoke, you're taking in some of that said smoke every time you breathe. - While you won't be dealt as bad a card as someone that smokes, the more you encounter a smoker and have to tolerate them next to you (no offense intended), the more at risk you are for the same symptoms. Guilt by association in this context I suppose.

And you have SO totally missed the entire point of Bill Hick's act, politics and message.
You think Hicks would have approved big tobacco's tactics?
And before this thread gets locked let me call all of the pro-smoking responders in here idiots. And yes, I'm a smoker.

Edited by: Wrayeth on 16/10/2006 06:11:20 Speaking as someone whose parents smoked in the house when he was a child (and, along with his sisters, has asthma because of it), smokers who force their habit on others need to die. Horribly.
If they want to do that to themselves, it's their choice; it's when that choice starts hurting me that I have an issue. If I lived in Ohio, I would support a ban on smoking like the one suggested in issue 5. -Wrayeth

I dont really give a toss on whether people think my clothes smell bad because I'm a smoker, or that I'm hurting myself or w/e.
I'm perfectly aware of the effects of smoking... a number of busy-bodies and other general nosy bastards have inquired as to why i dont quit smoking even though its bad for me and it smells bad and all that... and you know what? I like smoking. I like the smell of rolling tobacco. I like the smell of cigars. And I've decided that I wont quit until I want to. Simple as that.
As to generalized smoking bans, I'm against them on the basis that you can make legislation that allows large enough locals to have separate smoking/nonsmoking areas where the nonsmoker dont have to breath any passive smoke whatsoever. Its quite amazing what you can do with proper ventilation.

Smoking in public places is just plain selfish.
I dont want to smell like you, I dont want to get cancer like you, I dont want to have an asthma attack like you, I dont want my food to taste of ash, like you.
