Edited by: Wayback on 16/10/2006 16:29:45 I play with alot of very great guys from around the world and it seems most speak english very well.
I'm terrible at spelling my own language (English) and these guys can spell better than I can. I had to catch myself getting frustrated when a corp member was being shot at by some hostiles and couldnt clearly let us know where it was at. Truth be known I'd have been just a bunch of cuss words myself.
The reason I pulled up and though about it is because they went out of their way to learn a second language and there the better for it, where I just have my one lanugage I cant use well
I see some bashing on the boards and in game once in awhile for not using proper grammer, while that may be the case with me, my hats off to those who have mastered another language.

yes... but people that learn english as a second language are less special then you think, its kind of programmed in to your brain these days: - every decent movie = english - allot of nice series = english (with subs so you can learn what they say \0/) - english learned in junior high - highschool - english books at uni etc...
sooooo all in all, us that speak english as a second language are not so special, imo.
If uncle Adolf had won back in 40/45 you would have spoken quit a word of German mind you. ___________________

Americans, British, and Aussies really have no reason to learn a second language. In Europe you have many languages being spoken by countries that are right next to each other, but that really isn't the case in many English speaking countries.
Although I do think Spanish should be tought to Elementary kids here in the Southwest US. Very hard to learn it as an adult.

Yeah, you're right, except for the ones that write it better than the native speakers. That should make them special. Stories. |

It doesn't make them special at all. It makes the "natives" look stupid. Seriously, when you're taught Spanish in school, you're learn "proper" Spanish. When you're out and about in Mexico, half of what you say, they can't understand (speaking fluent "proper" Spanish, ofc). --- --- --- ---

I am thought my native language for at least 4 years of my life including all possible grammar combinations you can do and I speak it properly. I have an average of 3 hours a week where I study this sort of things as part of my second grade of education. I speak and write my native language properly.
For your information, I learned most of my English from movies, books and songs and still manage to spell it better than most native speakers. I did take classes later on in my life, but too few to consider that influential on how I write the language. Stories. |

I sometimes think that non-native speakers tend to put more effort into being precise and getting their second, third, fourth or whatever language right. Native speakers tend to not think about it so much and make less effort.
On the other hand, you could maybe point the finger at the education system in English-speaking nations. On the basis of what we see on the Internet, an awful lot of people leave school being practically illiterate. |
