I am looking to upgrade my GeForce4 from 2-3 yrs ago to something faster but I want to make sure whatever I buy plays well with EVE...
Which NVidia card should I buy ? GeForce4 440, GeForce4 5200, GeForce4 5900 or what ?
Anyone can help me with this one ?
SWEET routinely sells BPC's in Sing Laison and Essence Regions. |

Geforce FX 5200 is a good affordable low end card but doesnt offer as much performance as the upper Fx's or even the Ti series. If ure looking for good performance without having to pay the price it would have to be a geforce 4 ti 4200,or ti4800se. If ure looking for something that will play all the new upcoming titles with DX9.0 support and want killer performance id say go for a Geforce FX 5600,or if ure really looking for the best performance (with exception to a radeon 9800 pro) then go for the GEFORCE FX5900 Ultra its the best Nvidia card at the moment. (not sure if the FX 5950 has been released yet)

AnandTech usully benchmark new graphic cards against EVE. You could check out the card reviews there.
Here is one for the Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1910&p=8

DO NOT get a 5200.
The fan broke on my G4 Ti4200, while I was waiting for a replacment fan, I ran to the store and spent $90 on a 5200. It was way slower than the Ti4200 it replaced.
All the others you'll have to check the benchmarks and reviews.

Edited by: Anede on 31/10/2003 17:07:52 Any particular reason you specifically want a nvidia card? Don't get me wrong, I have only ever owned nvidia cards in the passed, but right now they are definatly not 'where its at'. If I was going to get a gfx card I'd definatly be looking at ATI's cards for speed and image quality. I recently built a friends machine with a 9600Pro which is flying along nicely.
Edit: Personally I wouldn't recommend the 5200 or 5600 nvidia cards. They really were a step backwards for nvidia in terms of performance.

If you don't wanna spend a lot, get a Radeon 9600 Pro. I got mine for $120 a few months back. Great card, no lock-ups. The low-end Radeons fair much better agains equally price GeForce cards.

Edited by: Guiermes on 31/10/2003 17:19:18 Whatever you do, sit back and wait a couple of weeks. Nvidia just released a pair of new cards ATI soon to follow with the holiday season kicking in, which means you will be able to pick up that DX9 card 20 to 30% cheaper.
Let those corporate bastages drop the prices on their prior top of the line cards and you can then step right in and buy last months latest and greatest end all be all cards cheap.

If I were you. I would get which ever GeForce video card it is, that DOESN'T show the sun through planets, stations, and ships.
Most of them do.

Normally I am a DIE HARD nVidia fan, but even I have to admit... in this particular generation... ATI has the better card for the money.
I would recomend the ATI Radeon9800 Pro, the TX is a lot more money for a little bit of extra performance |

speaking of radeons vs. geforces...
What was that I heard about geforce cards running the half life 2 benchmark poorly?
Anybody kept up-to-date on this and would like to give us a synopsis?

wait until the new releases come out. Then it would be wise to look at (frex) your next year's worth of planned software purchases. If all you do is EVE now this will be easier =).
I'm actually a Voodoo refugee from back in the day and since the evaporated i've been sticking with NVIDIA. However, as stated above, ATI currently kicks more ass. So i'm also gonna be waiting for the next gen to come out for several reasons -
1) i might go completely insane or win the lottery, in which case i get a new one 2) i'll have beat my brains out with the stats of all the old ones and singled out a winner 3) all the "old" cards - which are today's new cards - will step down a notch in price.

You shouldn't buy a nVidia, you should buy an ATi.
Radeon 9800 PRO if you have lots of money, 9800 non-pro if you don't have as much money, otherwise 9700 PRO :)
Plasma: it's because their PS2.0 performance absolutely SUCK. I don't know how it is with the new ForceWare though.

If you read the available reviews about Nvidia you will see that the only people that still buy them have been steriotyped as Nvidiots.
The 9800 Pro beats any nvidia card hands down, on some tests the nvidia drivers were unable to render the games.
Ive owned the latest Nvidia card and the 9800 saphire pro, one card got sent back and it wasnt the ATI.
Some games would not even run on the 5950 ultra, whilst the 9800 pro rompled home in style and quality.
Ive always been a die hard Nvidia fan, but its was time I faced the facts, they got left behind.
I got my kids a 9200 ATI and it runs nice and smooth any game, replaced a gf440mx and its far better.

go with the middle :) the 5600 or whatever... do they have the 5700?
why buy the cheapest or the most expensive? that is stupid
i dont buy no more top of the line only to see the price drop lots of $$$ and what for just a few more fps? eve is not a first person shooter... you do not need 100% of the best fps... and then it depends on other parts of your computer as well... support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

Edited by: Chucky on 31/10/2003 20:36:42 I still use a GF2 PRO , I'm guessing I get better frame rates then some people. I've played with alot of drivers since some don't work well with Eve. But I know DX9 was a real kick in the nuts for nvidia cards, prolly M$ pay back for the X-Box contract
... you will see more and more marketing which in turn will bring you more players to torture. |

While I would never buy another ATI card I would recommend if you are buying a card right now you should buy an ATI.
For me ATI has a few more years to prove themselves before I will consider going back.
That said I have a FX5900 and can play anything out there. But for Eve the best performing card is ATI.

Ati wins hands down. Ever since the hardware conflict with EVE has been resolved, the card has been rock stable for months. The speed is great aswell.
Besides that, they put some kinda anti-crash feature into the latest drivers, it's pretty amazing. I was running 3 EVE clients on my pc the other day and suddenly my pc decided to choke in it. I got a few error messages from windows saying my system was going unstable.
Then all of a sudden my screen goes black and I was already cursing at my pc, but what happened instead? The screen turns back on, everything goes back to normal and the Ati drivers simply states it had reset my video card to prevent any crashes and kindly requested me to not put so much load on the system in the future.
Needless to say I was pretty perplexed and impressed with this amazing feature.

wow, that's right up there with j0's posting of the agent's "exception" speech =8). Very nice. And don't forget red boards are teh sexx0r.
It's starting to look ominously like ati will chomp nvidia, as they chomped the Voodoo cards. (i still remember installing a voodoo after having run starseige in software mode on a crappy machine - that was my intro to 3d HW accel. slight difference eh!).
I think what it is is xbox will prove to be cursed. ever since bungie gave into the truckload of money Bill Gates drove up to their office, anyone who tangles with the thing in any way is Doomed by the Mark of the Betrayer...
ahem. anyway. wait a while and probably go just-short-of-most-expensive high-end ATI, that seems to be the consensus so far. I have a Ti4600 which handles everything i throw at it, but come the holidays, a major price break will probably cause me to jump ship. Sides, then i can build another machine =8).
