does anyone know of a free form of ID you can get in the UK? i need something other than my out of date passport (as unfortunately not all bouncers are blind), but i don't really want to fork out the ú60-ú90 for a new one atm, just wondering if anyone know of an alternative |

driving license is an option (i don't actually drive at all so it would just be a provisional thing) would still cost money tho. and neither my NUS card or general access card has my DoB on. |

goto your local police station, they can offer an acceptable form of ID, if that fails.. see your nearby College (if your studying)

Not free, but only ú5, so near enough! ... You can get a proof of age card from the Portman Group.
Check out the following link for more information on it:

There is an ID card that is advertised in a lot of city centre bars now, I just can't remember the name of it!
I used to take my birth certificate out with me until I got my drivers license!
Now I'm old enough to just not need it \o/ |

In the UK theres only three forms of ID that are LEGALLY acceptable for purchasing any age restricted products.
These are:
Passport Driving Licence And any form of ID displaying the "Pass" holographic logo on it.
None of the above are free forms of ID but my understanding is the Pass logo is the cheapest to aquire. --------------

The Portman Group's card I linked to info on is one of the "Pass" cards, and at ú5 it is certainly cheaper than a driving licence or passport!

Age restricted products are:
Alcohol. Knives/sharp impliments. Lighter Fluid. Matches. Jeyes Fluid.
At any time a hardware store (Such as B+Q) can refuse to sell you any products in their store if they believe you to be under the age of 18.
Also in the UK a policy is established with most age restricted commerical enterprises that if you look under 21 then ask for ID. So always take ID with you.
The punishment for allowing an under 18 to purchase a restricted product (including entrance to a club or, without supervision of their parent/gardian, a pub) is a maxium fine of ú3,000 pounds and a 3 month prison sentance and the possibility of losing your job.

Matches are age restricted at 18. Mainly cos little teenagers have a track record in this country of putting ligher fluid through someones front door and setting it on fire. Burn goes the house.
Jeyes fluid is a potent outside cleaner, stinks and if mixed correctly with aerosoles can be made into an explosive. --------------

Does the same apply to lighters? 'Cause I've never been asked for ID when buying lighters when I was under 16 even, and never heard of anyone else being rejected for buying one.
And yeah, wtf is 'Jeyes fluid?

As much as you might not want to spend the money you are going to be a lot better off with a driver's licence. Like the ex-doorman mentioned earlier only passports and driving licences are always accepted. You'll find even things like the Portman card will be worthless at a lot of bars and clubs. Its only a couple of nights out cost wise and will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

No on birth certificate, despite being the most official form of ID I own, if it's not photo ID they won't accept it. Usually if I need anything official like opening a bank account I give birth certificate (verifying my name) and any kind of unofficial photo cards I have, like library cards, student enrolement, NUS card (which isn't free btw), matched up with it so they can put the face and the birth certificate together. Sometimes they're silly and still refuse...It'd be somewhat of a coincidence if I managed to mug someone who looks just like me and steal such a multitude of different (but not valid photo) ID from them
Quote: I used to be a doorman, and we never accepted anything but driving licence, provisional or passport, and niether would many places accept anything else. We get in a lot of **** for under age people so they prolly wont take no risks
I can understand why they'd do that, but I'm 22 and own none of those forms of ID. So if they thought I looked younger they wouldn't get my money __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus |

A birthcertigate with some other form of random ID does not cut it. Doormen and people who work in off sales are not some personal adminstrator for you.
The law clearly states if you sell to someone who is under age and you let them without ID or without checking first (I don't care if you are 22 or not I would still ask for ID) you can have up a ú3,000 fine and 3 month prison sentance. On top of that you may get fired from your job as your employer will also be fined. --------------

technically there is an age restriction on matches and lighters but its 16 years old and no one pays attention to it, even the police.

I read all the posts in the thread before replying, I didn't signify who's posts I was replying to, which is what might have confused you into (for some reason) taking it personally. Just because I read your post doesn't automatically mean I'm going to respond to it in my post.
Quote: You clearly did not read my post where in the UK there is only 3 forms of LEGAL photographic evidence.
As stated, I read all the posts. But I already knew in the UK there is only 3 forms of LEGAL photographic evidence. Nowhere in my post did I state otherwise.
Quote: A birthcertigate with some other form of random ID does not cut it.
I think I already said in my post, that a birth certificate is not a valid form of ID because it doesn't have a photo. It was a response to Jatonix who suggested it as an alternative.
However, from my own experience, not having any form of LEGAL photographic evidence, sometimes it is accepted and sometimes it isn't. When I wanted to open a bank account, that's what I did. (see that specific example in my post)
Quote: Doormen and people who work in off sales are not some personal adminstrator for you.
I never said they were. Nor did I say that a) I used a birth certificate + other forms of random ID to buy alchohol (my example in my post was a bank) or b) if they thought I looked younger I'd be offended. Basically, I'm aware they're just doing their job and have no problem with them.
Quote: The law clearly states if you sell to someone who is under age and you let them without ID or without checking first (I don't care if you are 22 or not I would still ask for ID) you can have up a ú3,000 fine and 3 month prison sentance. Yes...I know? I suppose I should have illustrated my point more clearly so you didn't get the wrong idea. The problem with this is, this means long posts that get further away from the actual things I was replying to.
Yes, I know what the law states. Yes, if I looked under 21, even if I was 22, feel free to ask for ID. Yes, I know the consequences for selling to minors are stringent.
When I said it was 'silly' that they (meaning banks) were inconsistant in what they accepted. I was criticising the system, not the individuals. I realise there are issues like fraud etc, but on a personal basis, common sense would dictate that I am actually who I say I am with my plethora of ID. If I went into that criticism any further than 'silly' I would be discussing politics
As for when I said, if doormen or off liscence sellers thought I looked underage and I couldn't provide LEGAL photographic evidence, then the establishment they work for would not be able to recieve my money. This is um, fact? Nowhere did I say it was their fault, they have to abide by the law as much as I do.
My main issue that I dislike, which I guess didn't come off in my post is that the ID isn't free...I'm not forking out however much it is to get a new passport (80 quid?) if I'm not going anywhere, and I don't drive.
Which is why this ú5 ID seems like the best idea. For me, and probably for the OP. __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus |
