As a Rifter pilot I have one question....do serious Eve players fly Frigates? Just seems that in low sec space you mainly see the big toys!
The only way I can see a frigate being useful long term is as part of a corp fleet, employed in a specific role such as a web/scram ship, but as a solo craft I'm starting to find it just doesn't have the firepower to take out the big stuff.

To be honest I never use T1 frigs. If I do need a small support ship I use the ceptor or the assault frig.

T2 frigs are flown solo all the time.
T1 frigs are mostly useful as throwaway ships in fleets and such, but there are some that are used for pirating (rifter, punisher) or anti-support (griffin, kestrel, incursus). ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."

With good frigate and gunnery skills, even Tech1 frigates can be pretty lethal. They're also cheap. :)

depends on what you are trying to do. I have read many threadss saying that certain T1 frigs are vey good for low-sec pirating. The rifter and punisher seem to be most popular (for their speed and natural tanks respectively).
Of course, you don't jump in against anything when in a frigate but with a little thought and some practice, you can take down T1 cruisers in a frig. It's all about picking your targets and getting the right tool for the right job... but then again, this is true for all ship sizes.

Only Tech 2 Frigates, which are several times more expensive than cruisers and require more skills to fly.
From what I have seen most serious players fly Battleships or maybe higher-end cruisers. Even the Tech 2 frigates are mostly specialist ships.
Frigates and Destroyers are stepping stones to the real ships. The Rifter is cool though...that was my favorite frigate.

Unless they are kamakazis (because Tech 1 frigates are cheap), any Tech 2 Frigate will do the job way way way better and will be way more survivable in combat.
I wouldnt solo in a frigate myself...and if I did, I would try to get into a Tech 2 version as quickly as possible. Sadly, there are not Tech 2 versions of the Rifter Hull as far as I know.

I think it really depends on what you using them for Frigates are good support ships in PvP, but most pilots would use T2 varients such as Intercepters and Assault Frigates.
If your looking to go rat hunting in low sec while I know of people who have fought rats in T1 frigs like a Tristan. but its easier in a cruiser
I think for most pilots the natural pregression as a newb is Frigate to Cruiser to BC and BC to BS before they start looking at the T2 varients.

Rifter is an awsome ship, for solo pvp... not so much. If you like frigs like me i suggest getting a Wolf and a Jag, and maybe some intercepters too. The Jag is truly awsome now with the boost it got, its a rifter with better resists and 4 mid slots.
The thing you have to understand is the frigate is not a solo pawn mobile in gangs how ever it is awsome. 4 assult frigs can take down a BS, 5 make it that much easyer. I also think frigs are about the most fun you can have in pvp, they dont do high dammage, but they are fast, lethal, and comparitivly cheap.

The Jaguar is one of the Minmitar Assault frigs (cant remember the name of the other one) and both are based on the Rifter hull.
Don't underestimate T1 frigs with good skills and good tactics they can be deadly. Even more so in small gangs of 4 or 5.

Edited by: Patch86 on 17/10/2006 17:08:59 Pro is that they can out damage a cruiser no problem, are very very tricky to hit with large weaponry, and are much much faster thana comparable T1 ship.
T1 frigates do have their place in EVE- theres little in the way of tackling that you can't do in a T1 frig, that can be done in a T2 frig. I mean sure Interceptors are faster and Assault frigs can tank, but bearing in mind the price difference (10-20 million vs 300k) T1 frigs do come into their own. Also, they don't make bad EWAR ships, if you're working with friends.
For solo PvP or PvE though, they do suck. Cruisers are better soloing both, if you feel the need to go cheap.
Basically, no serious pilot will focus on flying T1 frigs, since there are better things for most jobs- but they can still be useful.
EDIT: Oh, and the Con- T2 frigates are very expensive, for frigates, and are basically uninsurable.

All ships have thier place and role in the order of battle.
Even mining barges and haulers...granted it¦s as targets, but they too have thier place.

well .. i fly taranis - since 6 month ... can't fly anything bigger
the problems i see you have are the following:
you are flying a t1 frig - this means you're quite slow (especially if it's plated) - a claw for example is ******* fast and has a good agility
lowsec is quite bad for frigs as you're bound to belt piracy - engaging ships that aren't flagged or -5 at a gate or station is suicide ...
while the first one isn't necessary a problem in low-sec, in 0.0 it might be one - especially if you're solo. 0.0 is one of the best places for frig piracy - sure you won't kill solo a well fitted BS (at least not without help of the NPCs) but you can kill haulers, other frigs and the odd n00bfitted cruiser ...
best thing you can do if you want frig PvP - join a 0.0 PvP corp ... ___________________

the kestrel while fragile is one of the best frigates out there when you talk cost per firepower.

T1 frigs give the most bang for your buck, but Bigger is Better.Ö
You should buy a big ship. For your friend. Its far easier IMO to fight ships of equal size than to try and avoid turret fire and to dodge drones while trying to break a tank 1 size larger than your's.

T1 frigs are mostly only used as throw-away ships.
The wolf and Jag are nice (Wolf with 3 gyro's and 280mm Arties, mmmh wreckings of 1000 damage ), but even if the AF are fit to tank and not to gank AF die very quickly to a Cruiser, so long as the cruiser pilot knows what he's doing, This makes them inpractical for solo use. In a gang they are pretty lethal, but again they are expensive (2-3 times the cost of a T1 cruiser).
For the most part, anything you can do in a AF can be done in a T1 cruiser for cheaper (for PvP anyway).
Plus the cruiser comes with more damage/EW/Cap.
If you like the Rifter, try the Rupture. Fly it until you could pop HAC's/BC's in your sleep, then decide if you want AF's or not
Inty's on the other hand are nice for Solo low-sec, the Claw is like a turbocharged Rifter with more tank and more damage, you shuold be able to break the average cruiser (NPCing) pretty easily in one.
