the one comment i want to make is on morality. why do people seem to think they can comment on it at all? calling morality subjective is debatable, as is following a kantian system or utilertaianism or egoism or virtue ethics or any other system you care to take. what i will say is i cant think of a single moral philosopher who takes subjectivism seriously anymore. until the whole mess that is morality is sorted out (not in this life time i bet) can we keep it out of this type of discussion.
to the op i'm a pirate and a philosophy student, i'll pop your ship but try to be nice about it, if you pop mine then good on you, i got stupid.

Quote: You Pirates pvP because you're raised on Sport. You think competition comes from beating someone else.
Umm, wrong. i dislike almost all forms of sport and am very uncompetative. i dont think pirating someone is winning, i think pirating is playing to the role that i have assumed in a game that is lets face it not real. i table top role-play as well and one of the best things about it is trying to see things from a different point of view and assuming a personality unlike your own. you might even learn something about yourself and others in the process. one of the things i'm expoloring through eve is egoism and why it may or may not be an effective ethical system. how do i do that... by having my character (ie not me) be an egoist. i would like to add that i dont consider my self selfish for playing the way i do, i'm quite able to see how what i do affects another person. i'd also like to think some of the people who have lost ships to me now think about how they play a little more.

Quote: In example one, we have an AF pilot ganking a 4 day old noob in the belts for the prospect of gaining? And after popping my ship getting a podkill because? No real reason really.
one thing i'd like to say is would you have learnt the rules of the game had this not happened. you should thank the pilot imo. maybe it cos i see things from the pirate point of view (as i am one) but there are so many ways people could avoid me(and other pirates like me)... wcs (which i will congratulate people for fitting in lowsec... shows they have some brains) aligning for warp, constant scanning on 360, instas and all that jazz. i'd rather learn how pirates work and so how to avoid them whem my losses are a t1 frig than when they are a bs. oh yeah and ransoming people is more fun than popping a t1 frig, but if thats all i can get i'll take it.

edit - and i knew plenty of that stuff 4 days in

Quote: I have a sneaking suspiscion, however, that you may have forgotten just how much you didn't know on day 4.
maybe your right, i definately know morw now than i did then, but i knew enough... i stayed out of lowsec for a quite while true. doesnt mean i didnt know that wcs are how you get around scamblers and that any pirate worth his salt is gonna fit one. i'll admitt i dont think i learnt about aligning to warp till after a got blown up a few times. my point being that the leanring curve to survive in lowsec isnt as large as people make out. you only have to ask a few (reasonable) people nicerly (i hope cos thats how i learnt a lot of other stuff which i then refined to my playing style)
