I learned some time ago that the game of EVE has sound, yes real music and explosions and everything. But also has an in game voice chat. Though I have yet to figure out how to use it. I'm not the only one either. So all of us use Ventrillo, Teamspeak, etc. instead.
So the built in Audio channels get as much use as ... the System, Constellation and Region Chat channels do. (YES really, you CAN chat with a whole region in one channel!).
I was so happy to discover these channels until i also found out that no one ever logged into them. I so wish CCP could get these channels recognized and used.
Why is all this an Issue? I can't talk (with voice) to my enemies, I cant taunt the guy I'm shooting (or more in reality, beg for my life) , I can't warn that 4 hour old character that he will die if he doesn't stop warming my 1600mm tech II armor plate. At least not also without telling everyone sneaking up on him in cloak (and also typing that message in local while I should be flying my ship).
Result? : very quiet fights. unless you are in a fleet with friends and then again you can only talk to your own side.
So how about it CCP can u revamp the in game audio some?
TWO ideas.
1) Allow easy setup and Push to talk and flashy icons in corners that will notify people that there is active audio (be it system wide, grid wide, ship-to-ship, or even region wide).
2) THIS IS THE ONE I REALLY WANT. The ability to talk to the guy I'm currently shooting. Start combat with the guy and you and he are automatically assigned a private voice channel! all I have to do is hit the push-to-talk button on my mouse!
Targeting .. Lock ..F1 ..*missiles on the way!*
Innocent Miner: Why are you shooting me? Deadly Pirate: I'm a pirate what do you expect?
*miners friend uncloaks, scrams and webs the pirate and starts launching torpedoes*
Innocent Miner #2: " Aha! Gotcha you filthy scum!" Cowardly Pirate: " Wait ... ransom, I'll Pay Ransom !"
Now try that in local chat with your keyboard. never happens.
Also its a better way to make new friends, understand why things happen, adds a new wide personal dimension to the game and if they are childish potty mouths? hit mute and blow him off the map. then ban him so he can never talk to u again until he makes nice. (which if that happens too much he may be unable to talk for a week, etc)
There may be a server load or bandwidth issue and Yes I know people may try to misuse it. My first idea was just to allow the channel if you target someone. this way you could just chat without firing - but it was pointed out to me that spammers and such would abuse it to the point no one would use it at all. So that's why I think its a good idea not to allow until actual weapons are fired. (though this will limit the use in high-sec, well except with the exception of CODE who may be the one group who is most against the idea , for obvious reasons, heh)
Other cons may be overcome by options such as being able to turn it off and on at will (no one can make u talk or even listen, if u don't want to). Also works if you play a long haired voluptuous redhead but actually speak in a gruff mainly voice, or your an eight year old, lol. And - If feasible - add voice changing software as an option as well. Just in case your pilot has so many enhancements it looks like a Borg, now u can sound like one too.
Big fleet fights with 4000 guys, a big sound mash right? Nope, only as many people as u can target (and are shooting), no more. And if you stop shooting - the channel stays open until you un-target them or he warps off. And if u podded the poor sap maybe it can have a short history too - so he can wake up in his new clone and regain contact post battle to apologize for making you so mad?)
And for those that don't fly combat ships? the same system we now use for private chats, but with a voice option built in.
I know the first response to this will be about how people will abuse it so no way it would work. (that response is more a comment on the caliber of people who play eve and not about features, lol) well maybe, anyway I bring it up to find out (If it can be made at least semi spam proof) does the community think it would be a cool feature to have in game.
With this feature you and your opponent can easily 'chat' - or not - while trying to kill each other. Something you can actually do right now - if - you spend 40 minutes or more setting up a common voice server - and - get it to work, While - you sit idle in space waiting to continue your surprise attack on that miner.

have you ever seen the bandwidth sucked up by trolls doing an "uhh/ahh chain" sound attack? Leave the expense to private TS/whatever out of game voice comms. The text smacktalk in local is enough to hobble the node, entertaining as it is. The certainty of abuse is another good reason not to, eve is known for its shadenfreude players.
Props for wanting to help newbros, but the enemy comms is a big nono, CCP doesn't need lawsuits or even more gov't spai'ing because of death/terror/piracy/FOTM threats that forget to add the CYA addendum of "in game."
You are content to be content. This is not a jedi mind trick, its just a game

Nobody wants to use the in game audio channels.
They are worse than out of gameservices like Teamspeak for chatting to friends.
And the number of people who actually want people to be able to open up an audio chat without their explicit permission and start saying whatever they want could be counted on one hand.
So this feature would be used assume all are true.
1: Both players have sound on. 2: Both players feel a need to have the attacker open up a chat channel at attackers will without defenders initial choice. 3: Neither player has the ability turned off. 4: The attacker is actively firing on the defender.
Not very likely.
P.S: It takes me literally 15 seconds to open up TS and connect to a new TS server once someone has pasted the address.
P.P.S: People whining about being shot happens quite frequently in local. Ransom demands are typically done in private convo to prevent anyone from interrupting while you are attempting to negotiate though. |

It'll be more like:
"Missiles on their way!" "Beep you, you beep beep beep, I'm gonna come to your house and beep my beep in beep beep so hard you'll beep beep beep. I got your beep beep IP and know where you beep live, beep beep. You're beep, beep."
Except they can't do an audio profanity filter, so you'll hear the whole thing at max raging volume.

No, we don't need "All Chat". If you thought screaming 12 year olds on call of duty was bad, wait until you hear grown adults. |

-1. Sorry, but the others have nailed it. Fleet comms are bad enough as is at times, we really don't need a "local comms" or anything of the sort even optionally. |
