In my case, there's no way I'm going back to typing. Gang combat is almost impossible without some kind of audio (TS/Ventrilo). It is a must-have. My game play experience is a lot better with it.
However, I know a few pilots that experienced some negative effects from ts/ventrillo. They can't understand their corp mates. Sometimes it's the accent, sometimes the over-use of localized slangs... you name it.
Being on a corp with mostly local guys solve most of these problems, but then the core of the group will play at the same time (more or less). That's not good when you need 24h POS defense.
So I'm curious about how common this problem really is, and how important is audio to you? |

I'm that used to voice coms in our corp that I feel deaf without it most of the time.
Normally won't do group pvp without it either.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it.

Guys, I ment audio coms like ts or vent... not game audio. The warping sound is actually annoying. |

Voice Comms.
Once you've started using them, you'll never look back. It really is invaluable, for things such as warning of incoming threats and calling primary targets.
So, before I even log into EVE, I fire up Ventrillo first, and find out what the craic is while EVE loads up.
If you havent tried using voice comms yet, but cant setup, rent or borrow a Vent or TS server, you can always use the conference call option in Skype. Quick to setup, entirely free, and decent enough for small gangs. You wont look back.
...on the other hand using a banana might be a viable alternative.

I tried setting that up once, using the on board sound card on my motherboard, and a seperate creative one. Never managed to get it setup right tho. Any tips???
Edit: This also begs the question if the new eve integral voice comms software will allow this type of thing to be done?

I have game sound in my speakers and a USB headset for Vent.
Dead easy to get working and no messing about with two soundcards conflicting.

I've never used TS/Vent so can't comment.
But i love the sounds in EVE, especially the warp boom I love the music aswell....very relaxing. I just wish there were "comm sounds", like when there's new chat or something. Of course you'd have to be able to set the frequency to your own liking

There's audio with this game? I've got all sounds muted in Windows.

Ditto here.
No doubt TS/Vent are really useful in combat. My only reservation in using them is that, between ppl talking over each other and poor quality codecs chosen by the channel admins, sometimes it's a futile effort. I prefer to limit the chatter to one or two people calling targets, and have everyone else respond via chat unless it's urgent. |

I would love to play with sound effects on, but the dang warp drive noise prevents me from hearing ventrilo properly. And voice coms are essential for pvp.

when I`m not on ts I usually blast music..
Only time I have the sound on is when I semiafk lvl4 missions or npc so I can hear when npc`s shoot at me/quit shooting at me. The latter I have to tab to eve and start fireing at another bs.

TS/Vent are essential if you're into PvP. Ingame sounds MUST be turned off if you want a decent framerate, even more so if you run two clients. Sorry sound devs - your work was wasted :( -- We are the Octavian Vanguard www.octavianvanguard.net

Pretty damn important - both game sounds and VOIP.
I don't understand people who turn the game sound completely off... I know it's just opinion, but to me if a game doesn't have sound worth listening to, most of the time that game isn't worth playing. Of course, the warp sound could use some tweaking (or an option to turn just that sound off).
As far as VOIP, I've used it so long, I don't play anything without it - even if it's not a multiplayer game, I'll still get on there and bull**** with my buddies.

I play with the sounds on in Eve but other games (where they are arguably more important) I tend to play with the sounds off, it's because if there is some horrible tenticled-cow-monster on my screen then I can assess the situation and I know what to do...if I can only HEAR the aforementioned tenticled-cow-monster then I freeze, can't do a thing, it's the sounds that get me. System shock 2 "kill me!" from something off screen = me needing to change my trousers. System shock 2 "kill me!" from something on scree = me killing it. see?

oh yeah I really miss an option to adjust volume on stuff like gates going off and missile explosions.. The stuff thats dependant on what range our cam is from the ship..
Either that or make it possible to adjust default range of cam.

Dont know if you ever got an answer on this. Typically on-board sound cards do not function if another sound card is plugged into a PCI slot. It is an either/or situation, you use on board or expansion. To be able to have dual sound output from your PC you will need to have 2 sound cards, period. It's just the way it is......
